4 INTR ODUCTION This manual describes the copier, printer, an d scan ner functio ns of the M X-M182/MX-M182 D/MX-M202D/M X-M232D digital multifunctiona l system. USING THE MANU AL This machine has been designed t o provide convenient cop y ing featur es in a minimum amount of off ice space and with maximum operationa l ease.
5 CONVENTIONS USED IN THIS MANU AL SPF This manual refers to the Sing le Pass Feeder as the "SPF". RSPF This manual refers to the Rever sing Single Pass Feeder as th e "RSPF". DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MODELS This manual covers the following models.
6 1 Chapter 1 SETUP BEFORE SOFTW ARE SETUP This chapter explains how to inst all and configure th e softwa re that is required for t he printer and scan ner functions of the machine.
7 SETUP PO WER ON THE MA CHINE The power switch is located on the left side of th e machine. Turn the power switch to the "ON" position. INST ALLING THE SOFTW ARE 1 The USB cable must not be connected to the machine. M ake sure that the cable is not connected before proceeding.
8 SETUP 1 8 Click the "MFP Driver" button. Click the " Display Readme" button to show information on packages that are selected. 9 Select "Connected to this computer" and click the "Next" button. Follow the on-scree n instructions.

10 1 CONNECTING T O A COMPUTER Follow the procedure be low to connect the machine t o your computer. A USB cable for connecting the machine to your computer is not includ ed with the machine.
11 SETUP USING THE MA CHINE AS A SHARED PRINTER If the machine will be used as a shared printer on a Windows network, follow these steps to install the printer driver in the client compute r. 1 Perform steps 2 through 6 in "INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE" (p.
12 1 CONFIGURING THE PRINTER DRIVER After installing the printer driver, you must configure the prin ter driver settings appropriate ly for the number of paper trays on the machine and the size of paper loaded in each . 1 Click the "Start" button, click "Control Panel", and then click "Printer".
13 SETTING UP B UTT ON MANA GER Button Manager is a so ftware program that works with the scanner driver to ena ble scanning from the mach ine. To scan using the machine, Button Manager must be linked with the scan menu on the machine. Follow t he steps below to lin k Button Manager.
14 SETUP 1 Windows 2000 1 Click the "Start" button, select "Settings", and then click "Control Panel". 2 Double-click t he "Scanners and Cameras" icon. 3 Select "SHARP MX -XXXX" and click the "Properties" button.
15 TR OUBLESHOO TING If the softwa re is not insta lled correctly, chec k the follo wing items on your computer. The driver cannot be installed (Windows 2000/XP) If the driver cannot be installed in Windows 2000/ XP, follow these steps to check your comput er's settings.

22 2 PO WER ON AND OFF The power switch is located on the left side of th e machine. PO WER ON Turn the power sw itch to the "ON" position. It will take about 25 seconds for the machine to warm up. While the machine is warming up, the START indicator will blink.
23 LO ADING P APER The mess age "TRAY< >:Add pape r." will be displayed w hen there is no copy paper in the selected paper tray. (< > is the tray number.) Loa d paper in the indicated pape r tray. P APER For best results, use only SHARP recommend ed paper.
24 BEFORE USING TH E MA CHINE 2 LO ADING P APER Make sure that the machine is not copying or printing, an d then follow these steps to load paper. Loading the paper tray 1 Gently lift and pul l out the paper tray until it stops. 2 Adjust the plates in the tray to the length and width of the paper.
25 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE Loading the bypass tray 1 Unfold the bypass tray. When feeding large paper such as B4 and A3 (8-1/2" x 14 " and 11" x 17"), pull out the bypass tray exte nsion. 2 Set the paper gu ides to the copy paper width.
26 BEFORE USING TH E MA CHINE 2 Envelopes Do not use the following envelopes, as misfeeds w ill occur. • Env elopes with metal tabs, clasps , str in gs, holes , or windows. • Env elopes with rough fibres , carbon paper , o r glossy surf aces. • Env elopes with two or more fla ps.
27 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 7 Press the [OK] key. A message asking you to confirm the new paper size setting will appear. 8 Press the [OK] key. The selected paper size will be stored and the display will return to the base screen.
28 2 A UDITING MODE When auditing mode is enabled , a count is kept of the pages printed by each account . The pa ge counts can be viewed in the display. This function is en abled in the system settings. (For the counts in copy, print, and scan modes, see p.
29 3 Chapter 3 COPY FUNCTIONS This chapter explains how to use the copy functions. NORMAL COPYING This section explains how to ma ke a regular copy. If "Auditing mo de" has been enabled (p .
30 COPY FUNCTIONS 3 5 Press the [START] key ( ) to begin copying. The copy is delivered to the paper outp ut tray. Copying from the SPF/RSPF 1 Make sure that an or iginal has not been left on the document glass. Close the SPF/RSPF. 2 Adjust the original guides to the size of the origin al(s).
31 COPY FUNCTIONS Auto paper select mode (when there are two or more paper trays) When auto paper select mode is enabled, "AUTO" appears in the paper size displa y.
32 COPY FUNCTIONS 3 Points concerning the position of the printed co py image Even if the same origi nal is copied onto the same type o f paper, difference s in the original size, scan ning location (.
33 COPY FUNCTIONS MAKING A COPY D ARKER OR LIGHTER The copy exposure can be adjusted as needed to the original. Three exposure modes are ava ilable: "AUTO", "TEXT" and "PHOTO". When "TEXT" or "PHOTO" is selected, the exposure can be manually adju sted to 5 levels.
34 COPY FUNCTIONS 3 SELECTING THE TRA Y Auto paper select m ode (p .31) normally operates (u nless it has been d isabl ed), and t hus when the orig inal is place d on the document glass a nd the origi.
35 COPY FUNCTIONS SELECTING THE ORIGINAL SIZE If you loaded a non-standard size* original or the original size was not correctly detected, se t the origin al size manual ly. Perform the follo wing steps after placing the document in the document feede r tray or on the docume nt glass.
36 COPY FUNCTIONS 3 USING THE BYP ASS TRA Y T O CO PY A SPECIAL SIZE ORIGINAL When the bypass tra y is being used for co pying and an origi nal that is placed on th e document glass is detected a s being a special size, the display will prompt the user to set the original size.
37 REDUCING OR ENLARGING A COPY There are three ways to enlar ge and reduce copies: • Automatic selection of a ratio accord ing to the paper size: Auto ratio selection • Specifying a ratio from 25.
38 COPY FUNCTIONS 3 MANU AL RA TIO SELECTION (PRESET COPY RA TIOS/ZOOM) 1 Place the original in the document feeder tray or on the document glass. 2 Press the [COPY RATIO] key. Copy ratios that can be selected will appear. 3 Select a preset rati o with the [ ] or [ ] key, or set the ratio (zoom) with the [ ] or [ ] key.
39 COPY FUNCTIONS SELECTING THE VER TICAL AND HORIZONT AL COPY RA TIOS SEP ARA TEL Y (XY ZOOM Cop ying) The XY ZOOM fea ture allows the horizontal and vert ical copy ratios to be changed indep endently. Example: Reduction only in the h orizontal direction.
40 COPY FUNCTIONS 3 7 Press the key. The vertical ratio can now be selected. 8 Set the vertical ratio with the [ ], [ ], [ ], or [ ] keys. A preset ratio can be se lected with the [ ] or [ ] keys. The ratio can be adjust ed in increments of 1% with the [ ] or [ ] keys.
41 A UT OMA TIC TW O-SIDED COPYING (MX-M182D/MX-M202D/MX-M232D) Two originals placed on the d ocument glass can be co pied on to each side of a sin gle sheet of p aper.

43 COPY FUNCTIONS Copying from the document glass 1 Place the original fo r the front side of the copy on the docum ent glass, and close the SPF/RSPF. 2 Press the [2-SID ED COPY] key. The duplex mode selection screen appear s. 3 Select "1 to 2" with the [ ] or [ ] key, or with the [2 -SIDED COPY] key.

46 3 TW O-SIDED COPYING USING THE BYP ASS TRA Y To perform manual two-sid ed copying, follow these steps. Example: Copying originals A and B onto each side of on e sheet of paper 1 Copy original A.
47 DU AL P A GE COPYING A dual page original can be aut omatically separated into two pages du ring copying. Th is f eature is convenient for making copies of b ooks and other dual page originals on individual sheets of paper . 1 Place the original on the document glass, aligning the division between the pages with the size marker (see below).
48 3 INTERR UPTING A COPY R UN (Interrupt cop ying) A copy run can be tempora rily interrupted t o allow an ot her copy job to be per formed. (Inter rupt copying) When the other job is finished, the c opy run w ill resume using the orig inal copy settings.
49 CONVENIENT COPY FUNCTIONS This section explains majo r convenient co py functions. R O T A TING THE IMA GE 90 DEGREES (Rotation Cop y) When "Auto p aper select mod e" or "automatic r.
50 COPY FUNCTIONS 3 1 Place the original s in the document feeder tray or the first original on the document glass. If the originals are placed in th e document fee der tray, sort mode will be automatically selected. This can be chang ed to no sort in the system settings.
51 COPY FUNCTIONS COPYING MUL T IPLE ORIGINALS ONT O A SINGLE SHEET OF P APER ( 2 IN 1 / 4 IN 1 Copy) Multiple originals can be copied onto a single sh eet of paper in a selected layout pa ttern.
52 COPY FUNCTIONS 3 5 Select "2in1/4in1" wi th the [ ] or [ ] key. 6 Press the [OK] key. The 2 in 1 / 4 in 1 selection screen will appear. 7 Select "2in1" or "4 in1" with the [ ] or [ ] key. 8 Press the [OK] key. The setting s for 2 in 1 or 4 in 1 will appear.
53 COPY FUNCTIONS CREA T ING MARGINS WHEN COPYING(Mar gin shift) The margin shift f unction shifts the image to cr eate a margin at the edge of the paper. By def ault the funct ion create s a 10 mm (1/2") margin at th e left edge of the paper. • You can select whether to crea te a margin at the top edge or at the left edg e of the paper.
54 COPY FUNCTIONS 3 ERASING SHADO WS AR OUND THE EDGES OF A COPY (Erase Cop y) ● This feature is used to erase shadows t hat appear ar ound the ed ges of copies of books and other thick originals. (EDGE ERASE) ● The feature can also erase th e shadow that appe ars down the ce ntre of books and other originals that open up.
55 COPY FUNCTIONS 7 Select the erasure width with the [ ] or [ ] key. If you selec t 0 mm (0"), the printed result is the same as when "OFF" is selected. 8 Press the [OK] key. You will return to the base screen. 9 Select other copy settings as needed and press the [START] key ( ).
56 3 CARD SHO T When copying a card, this function allows you to pr int the front an d back sides of th e card next to each other on a single shee t of paper. This function creat es 2 in 1 imag es of the fr ont and back side of the card a nd centres them on the paper.
57 COPY FUNCTIONS 8 Press the [START] key ( ). The front side of the car d is scanned. 9 Turn the origi nal over on the document glass. 10 Press the [START] key ( ).
58 3 ID CARD COPY You can copy the front and back sides of ID card ont o a page throu gh this function, which can be used as mar gin shift function, too. The specified patt erns of ID card copy are shown as follows. 1 Place the ID card on the upper left corner of t he document glass.
59 COPY FUNCTIONS 5 Press the [START] key ( ). Scanning of one side begins. • Press the [READ-END] key to print only o ne side. 6 Turn the ID card to the other side, and press the [START] key ( ). When scan finished, Copy will begin. T o cancel ID card cop y , press the [CA] key .
60 4 Chapter 4 PRINTER FUNCTIONS This chapter explains how to use the printer function s. The procedure for loading paper is the same as for loading co py paper. See "LOADING P APER" (p .23) . B ASIC PRINTING The following example explains ho w to print a document fr om WordPad.
61 PRINTER FUNCTIONS 4 Make sure that "SHARP MX-xxxx" is selected as the printer. If you need to change any print settings, click the "Preferences" bu tton to open th e printer driver setup screen. The printer driver setup screen will appear.
62 PRINTER FUNC TIONS 4 OPENING THE PRINTER DRIVER FR OM THE " Star t " BUTT ON You can open the printe r driver and change the printer driver setti ngs from the Win dows "Start" button. Settings adjusted in this way will be th e initial settings when you pr int from an application.
63 PRINTER DRIVER SETTING SCREEN Some restrictions exist on the comb inations of setting s th at can be selected in the printer driver s etup screen. When a restriction is in effect, an informa tion icon ( ) will appear next to the setting. Click the icon to view an explanation of the restriction.
64 PRINTER FUNC TIONS 4 PRINTING MUL TIPLE P A GES ON ONE P A GE This function can be used to reduce the print image and pr int multiple pages on a single sh eet of paper. This is convenient when you want to print mult iple images such as photo s on a single sheet of pape r, and when you want to conserve pape r.
65 PRINTER FUNCTIONS FITTING THE PRINTED IMA GE T O THE P APER ( Fit T o P aper Siz e ) The printer driver can adjust the size of the print ed image to match the size of the paper loaded in the machine. Follow the steps sho wn below to use this fun ction.
66 PRINTER FUNC TIONS 4 ENLARGING/REDUCING THE PRINT IMA GE (Zoom) This function is used to enlarge or red uce the image to a selected percent age. This allows you to enlarge a small image or add margins to the pape r by slightly reducing an image. 1 Click the "Paper" ta b in the printer driver setup screen.
67 PRINTER FUNCTIONS ADJUSTING THE BRIGHTNESS AND CONTRAST OF THE IMA GE (Image Adjustment) The brightness and contrast can be adjust ed in the print settings when printing a photo or other image. These settings can be used for sim ple corrections when you do not have image editing soft ware installed on your comput er.
68 PRINTER FUNC TIONS 4 TW O-SIDED PRINTING The machine ca n print on both sides of the paper. This fun ction is useful for many purpo ses, and is particularly convenient when you want to create a simple pamphlet. Two-sided printi ng also helps conse rve paper.
69 SA VING FREQ UENTL Y USED PRINT SETTINGS Settings conf igured on each of the tabs a t the time o f printing can be saved as u ser setting s. Saving freque ntly used settings or complex colou r settings under an assigned n ame makes it easy to se lect those set tings the next time you need to use them.
70 4 OUTLINE OF THE PRINT ST A TUS WINDO W When printing beg ins, the Print Statu s Window automatically open s. The Print Status Window is a utility t hat monitors the machine and shows the name of the document being printed and any error messages that occur .
71 5 Chapter 5 SCANNER FUNCTIONS This chapter explains how to use the scanner fu nctions. SCANNING O VER VIEW The flow chart shown belo w provides an overvie w of scanning. * 1 To scan using the machine's operation panel, you must first install Button Manager and establish the appropriate settings in the Control Panel.
72 SCANNER FUNCTIONS 5 SCANNING USING THE KEYS ON THE MA CHINE The procedure for scanning using the [SCAN] key is explained in the following. When scanning is p erformed by this method, the previously specified application wi ll automatically start and the scanned image will be acquired into the application.
73 B UTT ON MANA GER Button Manager is a software utility that allows the scanner functi on to be used by means of the [SCAN] key on the machine. The Button Manager softwar e allows you to assi gn a destination ap plication and scan settings to each of the six destinations on t he machine.
74 SCANNER FUNCTIONS 5 BUTT ON MANA GER SETTINGS Once installed, Butto n Manager normally run s in the background in the Win dows operating system. If you need to change Button Ma nager settings, follow the steps below. For details on Button Manager sett ings, see Button Ma nager Help.
75 SCANNING FR OM Y OUR COMPUTER The machine supports the TWAIN standar d, making it possible to scan f rom TWAIN-compliant applications. The machine also supports WIA (Windows Image Acquisition ), making it possible to scan from WIA-compliant applications and the "Sca nner and Camera Wizard " in Windows XP.
76 SCANNER FUNCTIONS 5 7 Specify the scanning area and set the scan preferences. For information on sp ecifying the scan ar ea and setting the scan preferences, see scan ner driver Help. "Scanner driver settings" ( p .77) 8 When you are ready to begin scanning, click t he "Scan" button.
77 SCANNER FUNCTIONS Scanner driver settings The scanner driver setup scr een consists of the "Se t-u p screen", wh ich lets you select scan sett ings, and the "Preview screen", which shows the sca nne d image. For details on the scan setti ngs, click the "Help" button in the preview screen to display Help.
78 SCANNER FUNCTIONS 5 Previe w screen Click the "Pre view" button in the Set-up screen to displa y the scanned image . Y ou can specify the scanning area b y dra gging the mouse inside the window . The inside of the frame that is c reated when you dr ag the mouse will be the scanning area.
79 SCANNER FUNCTIONS SCANNING FR OM A WIA-COMPLIANT APPLICA TION (Windo ws XP/Vista/7) If you are using Windows XP/Vista /7, you can use the WIA drive r to scan from Pain t and other WIA-compl iant applications. The proced ure for scanning usin g Paint is explained in t he following.
80 SCANNER FUNCTIONS 5 SCANNING FR OM THE "Scanner and Camera Wizard" (Windo ws XP) The procedure for scanning wit h the "Scanner and Ca mera Wizard" in Wind ows XP is explained here. The "Scanner and Camera Wizard" lets yo u scan an image without usin g a WIA-compliant application.
81 SCANNER FUNCTIONS 7 When scanning ends, the following screen will appear. Select the next task that you wish to perform, and then click the "Next" button. If you are ready to end the session, click "Nothing. I’m finish ed working with these pictures".
82 6 Chapter 6 TR OUBLESHOO TING This chapter describes trou bleshooting and misfeed re moval. TR OUBLESHOO TING If you experience difficulty using the machine, check the following troublesh ooting guide before calling for service. Many problems can be easily resolved by th e user.
83 MA CHINE/COPYING PROBLEMS The following problems ar e related to the gener al operation of t he machine and copying. Problem Cause an d solution Pag e The machine does not operate. The machine is not plu gged into a power outlet . → Plug the machine in to a grounded outlet.
84 TROUBLESHOO TING 6 P aper misfeed. Misfeed occur s. → T o re mo v e the misfeed, see "MISFEED REMO V AL". 92 The paper is outsi de of the specif ied size and weight range . → Use copy paper within the specified range. 23 P aper curled or damp.
85 TROUBLESHOO TING The original size is not automaticall y selected or th e copy is not made on paper that matches the size of the ori ginal. Was the SPF/RSPF (or do cume nt cover) opened completely when the original was placed on the document glass? → Open the SPF/RSPF completely and then place the original on the document glass.
86 TROUBLESHOO TING 6 The displa y turns off . Any othe r indicator s turned off . → If other indicators are lit, the ma chine is in "Preheat mode". Press any k ey on the oper ation panel to resume nor mal operation. 22 ST ART indicator b links.

88 TROUBLESHOO TING 6 A Notice P age (NP-001) has be en printed, but the print data has not been printed complete ly . A print job containing more data than ca n be held in the print memory is sent to the machine. → Disable the R OPM function on the "Configuration" tab of the printer dr iv er setup screen.
89 TROUBLESHOO TING The printed image is darker or lighter than e xpected. The setting f or the print densit y is not appr opriate. → Y ou can adjust the print density on the printer driver . Click the "Advanced" tab in the printer dr iv er setu p screen, and clic k the "Compatibility" button.
90 TROUBLESHOO TING 6 Unable to scan the image. If scanning is not possib le, shut down y our computer , turn off the mac hine’ s power s w itc h, and unplug the machine’ s power cor d. Next, start your computer , restor e power to the mac hine, and try scanning a gain.

92 6 MISFEED REMO V AL When a misfeed occurs durin g copying, the message " Clear paper path." and th e location of the misfeed w ill appear.
93 TROUBLESHOO TING Section C Remove the misfed original from the exit area. If the misfed original ca nnot be easily remo ved from the exit area, ope n the moveable pa rt of the document f eeder tray an d remove the ori ginal. 2 Open and close the SPF/RSPF to make the misfeed l ocation indicator stop blinking.
94 TROUBLESHOO TING 6 MISFEED IN THE MA CHINE 1 Open the bypass tray and the side cover. 2 Check the misfeed location. Remove the misfed paper following the instructions for e ach location in the illustration below. A. Misfeed in th e paper feed area 1 Push gently on both e nds of the front cover and open it.
