17 Preparation Preparation Adjusting the Hand Strap 1 Open the hand strap flap ( 1 ) and the grip strap ( 2 ). 2 Loosen the grip strap , pass your right hand through the loop , and put your thumb on the REC ST ART/ST OP button. Then, pull the grip strap tight until it fits snugly .

26 Useful Features Selecting the Camcor der Mode This camcorder includes functions for use as both a video camera for recor ding and playing back images on tapes and as a digital still camera for recor ding and playing back still images on SmartMedia cards.
27 Useful Features Useful Features Using the Controls The following controls on the camcor der can be used to select and operate the various functions, settings and on-screen displays. 28 Useful Features Selecting the User Mode This camcorder featur es three user modes for the camera recor ding functions. The selectable items on the menu screen ar e differ ent depending on the user mode. Media Selection switch User mode A uto mode (A UT O): Lets you adjust all menu settings except manual settings.

30 Useful Features Recor ding in LP (Long Play Recor ding) Mode This camcorder allows you to r ecord in LP (Long Play Recording) mode for appr oximately 50% more r ecording time with the same pictur e quality as that in SP (Standard Play Recor ding) mode.
31 Useful Features Camera Recording Useful Features Selecting the 16-bit A udio Recor ding Mode This camcorder allows you to select between the 12-bit and 16-bit audio recor ding modes. The camcorder normally recor ds audio in the 12-bit audio recor ding mode.
32 Useful Features Setting the Digital Zoom Y ou can select from among four differ ent zoom ranges: 1 – 26 K (optical zoom), 26 – 50 K (digital zoom), 26 – 100 K (digital zoom) or 26 – 780 K (digital zoom). The digital zoom allows you to recor d powerful close-up pictures with the same operation as normal zooming.
33 Useful Features Camera Recording Useful Features Gamma Brightness Compensation When the subject is backlit, the image will appear dark if it is recor ded normally . The gamma brightness compensation function improves the pictur e by increasing the brightness of the subject while leaving the brighter portion of the image unaffected.
34 Useful Features Gain-up When you are r ecording in a dark or poorly- illuminated location, “ LIGHT ” is displayed on the screen. Use the gain-up function to r ecord a brighter picture. GAMMA/BRIGHTER button Note: • At locations where lighting is adequate, “ LIGHT ” will not appear .
35 Useful Features Camera Recording Useful Features Night Recording (Super Cat’ s Eye) The night recor ding function allows you to recor d the subject in absolute darkness. This is useful when you want to recor d subjects at night, e.g. a nocturnal animal, without artificial light.
36 Useful Features Quic k Return When you have been playing back what you have recor ded on the tape, and wish to quickly return to recor ding from the end of the last recor ded scene, use the quick return function. Operation button 1 Set the camcorder to T APE-CAMERA mode.
37 Useful Features Camera Recording Useful Features F ade In and F ade Out The fade function allows you to gradually bring the image and sound in or out at the beginning or end of a scene for creating scene transi- tions. This is especially effective for indicating a dramatic change in scenery .

39 Useful Features Camera Recording Useful Features Still Recording on T ape Y ou can record still images of subjects with normal sound on a tape by selecting one of two still recor ding modes. T ype of Still Recording modes SNAP: A still picture is r ecorded for 6 seconds.
40 Useful Features Still Recording Eff ects Y ou can select one of these still recording effects to recor d the still images with an effect. T ype of Still Recording Effects PHO T O SHO T : A still picture is r ecorded following the sound and visual effects of a camera shutter closing.
41 Useful Features Camera Recording Useful Features Using P-IN-P mode 1 P erform the steps in “ Selecting a still recording eff ect ” to select “ P-IN-P ” (see page 40). 2 In Recording Standby mode , press the STILL button. • An inset image of the subject is displayed.
42 Useful Features Letting the Subject Monitor the Shot Open the LCD monitor and rotate it 180 ° vertically so that the screen faces the other way and the subject can monitor the shot while you are recor ding with the viewfinder . If the camcorder is steadied, you can r ecord yourself in the scene by watching yourself on the LCD monitor .
43 Useful Features Camera Recording Useful Features A uto Focus The camcorder is pr eset to Auto Focus mode, which is designed to focus on most types of subjects. In Auto Focus mode, the camcorder automatically focuses on whatever is in the center of the scene.

V ariable Setting the Shutter Speed The shutter speed is preset to auto mode, which automatically chooses the optimal shutter speed for the ambient light.
50 Advanced Features Recommended Shutter Speeds The faster the shutter speed, the darker the picture becomes. Select the most appr opriate shutter speed for the ambient light.
51 Adv anced Features Camera Recording Advanced Features Manual Exposure The camcorder is pr eset to Auto Exposure mode, which automatically chooses the optimal aperture. When there is too much contrast in brightness between the subject and back- ground, however , you may not be able to recor d a clear image.
52 Advanced Features W/B button White Balance Loc k The color of the subject on the screen tends to look differ ent depending on the lighting condition. The camcorder is pr eset to Auto White Balance mode, which automatically adjusts the hue of the picture for the curr ent lighting condition.
