6 Playing a CD Y ou can also use rechargeable batteries, dry batteries and a car battery as a power source. 1 . Connect your CD player . 1 Connect the AC po wer adaptor .

8 About the display • When you press u after changing the CD or turning off and on the play er , the total number of tracks in the CD and total playing time appear for about two seconds. • During play , the track number and the elapsed playing time of the current track appear .
9 Playback options Y ou can enjoy various w ays of playback using PLA Y MODE and REPEA T/ENTER. PLA Y MODE button Each time you press the b utton, you can change the playback mode.
10 Playing tracks repeatedly (Repeat play) Y ou can play tracks repeatedly in normal, single, shuffle and PGM play modes. During playback, press REPEA T/ENTER. Note on . / > During Repeat play , you can locate the first track after the last track by pressing > r epeatedly .
11 Playing tracks in your favorite order (PGM play) Y ou can program the CD player to play up to 64 tracks in your fav orite order . 1 During playback, press PLA Y MODE repeatedly until “PGM” appears. 2 Press . or > to select a track. 3 Press REPEA T/ENTER to enter the selected track.
12 Using the radio When listening to the radio, use the alkaline batteries or the rechargeable batteries. This CD player is designed for portable usage; therefore, you cannot listen to the radio using the AC power adaptor . Before you operate the radio, do the followings: • Stop the CD play .
13 Using the radio T o improve br oadcast reception For FM, extend the headphones/earphones cord . For AM, reorient the tuner-remote control itself. If it is hard to listen to the FM br oadcast When listening to the radio, press and hold FM MODE (same as the RADIO ON/B AND button) until “ MONO ” or “ LOCAL ” appears in the display .
14 Presetting radio stations automatically Y ou can store radio stations into the player ’ s memory automatically as long as their signals are strong enough. Once you ’ ve preset the stations, you can select the station using the preset number . Y ou can preset up to 40 stations, 30 for FM and 10 for AM.
15 Using the radio Presetting radio stations manually If some stations cannot be preset automatically because their station signals are weak, you need to preset them manually . If you want to preset a certain station on a certain preset number , you have to preset it manually .
16 Presetting radio stations manually 6 Press the jog lever to ward u •MODE and hold it until the preset number disappears fr om the display . Playing preset radio stations Y ou can tune in to the station easily by selecting the preset number . 1 Press RADIO ON/BAND to select “FM” or “AM”.
17 Using the radio Changing the tuning interval Y ou can change the frequency range and the tuning interval by selecting the ar ea code. 1 Press and hold x /RADIO OFF until the frequency indication flashes in the display . 2 Slide the jog lever toward > /F+ repeatedly until the area code you want appears in the display .
18 Emphasizing the bass sound (SOUND) Y ou can emphasize the bass-boosted sound. Press SOUND to select “ BASS ” or “ BASS . ” “ BASS ” enhances the bass sound more than “ B ASS ” . Note If the sound is distorted when using the SOUND function, turn down the v olume.
19 Protecting your hearing (A VLS) The A VLS (Automatic V olume Limiter System) function keeps do wn the maximum volume to protect your hearing. Set A VLS to “ LIMIT . ” T o turn off the A VLS function Set A VLS to “ NORM. ” Flashes when the volume is turned up and beyond a certain level.
20 T ur ning off the operation beep sound Y ou can turn off the beep sound that is heard from your headphones/earphones when you operate your CD player . 1 Remove the power source (AC power adaptor , rechargeable batteries or dry batteries) from the CD player .
21 Connecting a stereo system Y ou can listen to CDs through a stereo system and record CDs on a cassette tape and a MiniDisc. For details, see the instruction manual that comes with the connected device. Be sure to turn off all connected de vices before making connections.
22 Connecting a stereo system About Joint T ext (CD text copying function) The Joint T ext function allo ws you to copy the disc and track names that are on a CD containing CD text information. By connecting a Sony MD W alkman (MZ-R90/ R91), which supports Joint T ext, to this CD player , you can copy the CD te xt onto an MD during recording.

24 Using the rechargeable batteries T o remove the rechargeable batteries Remove the batteries as illustra ted below . When to charge the rechargeable batteries Y ou can check the remaining power of the batteries in the display . Battery power is full.
25 Using dry batteries Use only the following dr y battery type for your CD player: • LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries Note Be sure to remov e the A C power adaptor w hen using the dry batteries. 1 Open the battery compartment lid. 2 Insert two LR6 (size AA) batteries by matching the 3 to the diagram in the battery compartment.
26 Precautions On safety • Should any solid objects or liquid f all into the CD player , unplug it and hav e it checked by qualif ied personnel before operating it any further . • Do not put any foreign objects in the DC IN 4.5 V (e xternal power input) jack.
27 T roubleshooting Should any problem persist after you ha ve chec ked these symptoms, consult your nearest Sony dealer . CD player Symptom The volume does not increase even if you press the VOLUME + button rep e atedly. No sound, or noise is heard. The playing time is too short when powered with the dry batteries.
28 T roubleshooting CD player Symptom Cannot adjust the volume with the VOLUME +/ – buttons on the CD player . During recording with optical digital connection, the track number cannot be recorded correctly . The CD player does not start charging. After the batteries were replaced, the volume changed.
