5 Enjoy your A TRAC CD Walkman! What is an A TRAC CD? An A TRAC CD is a CD-R/R W on which audio data compressed in the A TRA C3plus/A TRA C3 format has been recorded. About 30 audio CDs can be recorded on a CD-R/R W .* Y ou can also record MP3 files by con verting the files to the A TRA C3plus/A TRAC3 format.
6 Music sources playable on this CD player Y ou can play the following 3 music sources on this CD player: • Audio CDs (CDD A format) • CDs with A TRAC3plus/A TRAC3 format f iles (A TRA C CD) • CDs with MP3 format files (MP3 CD) Usable disc formats Y ou can use ISO 9660 Level 1/2 and Joliet e xtension format discs only .
7 A TRAC3plus and A TRAC3 “A TRAC3plus, ” which stands for “ Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding3plus” is audio compression technology , developed from the A TRAC3 format. Though the A TRA C3plus format can compress music content to about 1/20 of its original size at 64 kbps, you can still enjoy high quality sound.

16 Checking CD information on the display Y ou can check CD information by repeatedly pressing DISPLA Y/MENU on the CD player . When you are playing a CD containing text information such as CD-TEXT , “track name, ” “album name, ” “artist name, ” etc.
17 Notes • The characters A - Z, a - z, 0 - 9, and _ can be displayed on this CD player . • Before playing a file, the CD player reads all file and group (or folder) information on the CD. “READING” is displayed. Depending on the content of the CD, it may take some time to accomplish this reading.

19 Playback options Playing all files in a selected group (Group play) (A TRAC CD/MP3 CD only) P erf orm steps 1 and 2 of “Selecting playbac k options” (page 18), turn the jog dial to select “GROUP , ” then press DISPLA Y/MENU to enter the selection.
20 Playing your favorite tracks by adding Bookmarks (Bookmark track play) While the CD player is playing, you can add Bookmarks to the tracks you want and play them only .
21 Playback options Playing the 10 tracks you have played most frequently (A uto ranking play) The CD player automatically memorizes up to 10 tracks you have played most frequently from the CD being played, and plays them from the 10th to the top.
22 Playing tracks in your favorite order Checking the program While programming: Before step 4, push and hold the 5-way control key to ward u repeatedly , or press DISPLA Y/MENU repeatedly . While play is stopped: Press DISPLA Y/MENU repeatedly until “PR OGRAM” and the track number appear .
23 B Available featur es Adjusting sound quality (Parametric equalizer) Y ou can enjoy your fav orite sounds by adjusting sound quality in the following tw o ways: • Selecting a preset sound pattern.
24 Adjusting sound quality Notes • When you select CUSTOM sound, sound may be distorted depending on your sound settings when you turn up the volume. If this happens, turn the v olume down. •Y ou may feel a difference in sound v olume between the CUSTOM sound setting and other sound settings.
25 Stopping playback automatically (OFF TIMER) Y ou can set the CD player to stop playback automatically within a range of 1 to 99 minutes by one minute.
26 Tu rn ing of f the beep sound Y ou can turn off the beep sound that is heard from your headphones/earphones when you operate your CD player . 1 Press DISPLA Y/MENU until the MENU screen appears. T urn the jog dial to select “OPTION,” then press DISPLA Y/MENU.
27 Playing tracks continuously (SEAMLESS) (A TRA C CD only) Y ou can play live concert music, etc. without space between the tracks. 1 While play is stopped, press DISPLA Y/MENU until the MENU screen appears. T urn the jog dial to select “OPTION,” then press DISPLA Y/MENU.
28 B Using the radio Improving broadcast r eception For FM, extend the headphones/earphones cord. For AM, reorient the CD player itself. Note K eep the headphones/earphones connected to the i jack of the CD player . The headphones/earphones cord works as the FM antenna.
29 Protecting your hearing The A VLS (Automatic V olume Limiter System) function keeps the maximum v olume do wn to protect your hearing. 1 While listening to the radio, press and hold DISPLA Y/MENU until the display changes. 2 Push the 5-way control ke y toward .
30 Presetting radio stations 4 Press DISPLA Y/MENU for 2 seconds or more. The CD player starts scanning the stations from the lower frequencies and stops for about 3 seconds when a station is receiv ed. 5 If you want to preset the received station, press DISPLA Y/MENU while the preset number is flashing.
31 To exit the preset memory standby mode When the radio is turned on, you can exit the preset memory standby mode using one of the following procedures. Preset stations, howe ver , will remain stored in the CD player’ s memory . • Hold down MEMOR Y until the preset number stops flashing.
32 B Connecting to a power source Y ou can check the remaining power of the battery in the display . t t t t t Lobatt* * Beep sounds. When the battery is depleted, charge the rechargeable battery or replace the dry battery with new one. Notes • The indicator sections of roughly show the remaining battery power .
33 Charging the supplied r echargeable battery 1 Connect the AC po wer adaptor to the DC IN 3 V jack of your CD player and an AC outlet. 2 Push the 5-way control ke y tow ard x / CHG to start charging. The CD player charges the battery . The indicator sections of light up in succession and the OPR lamp flashes and then lights up.
34 Notes on the power source Disconnect all power sources when the CD player is not used for a long time. On AC power adaptor • Use only the AC po wer adaptor supplied. If your CD player is not supplied with the one, use the A C-E30HG AC po wer adaptor .

38 Tr oubleshooting Should any problem persist after you ha ve checked these symptoms, consult your nearest Sony dealer . CD player Symptom The volume does not increase even if you press VOL + repeatedly (or even if you turn VOL +/– in the + direction repeatedly on the remote control).
39 Additional information Symptom The CD does not play or “No disc” appears in the display when a CD is placed in the CD player . OPR lamp flashes on the CD player when you press a button, and the CD does not play . The rechargeable battery cannot be charged.
40 Tr o u bleshooting Symptom During playback of an A TRAC CD or MP3 CD, the CD does not rotate but you can hear the sound normally . “NO FILE” appears on the display after you push the 5- way control key toward u (Remote control: after you press u ) or when the lid of the CD player is closed.
