Connections 17 Connections The connections you choose to make will depend on the video services you r eceive and on the connections available with your TV , audio amplifier , or record ing device (VCR or DVD Recorder). Select the appr opriate examples for your conditions in the following pages.
18 Operating Instructions Connecting TV/Monitor Connect the HD DVR’s HDMI output jack to the HD TV’s HDMI input jack using the HDMI cable (supplied). ✍ If you are connecting an audio system, connect the digital audio optical cable to your audio system for your home theater .
Connections 19 HD TV with DVI connector 1 Secur ely connect the DVI adapter (supplied) to the HD TV’s DVI input. 2 Connect the HD DVR’s HDM I output jack to the HDM I-DVI adapter attached to the H D TV using the HDMI cable (supplied). 3 Connect the HD DVR’s Audio OUT to the HD TV’s Audio IN using an audio cable .
20 Operating Instructions TV with component connector 1 Connect the HD DVR’s component output jack s to the TV’s component video input jacks using a component video cable (Y , P B , P R )(supplied). 2 Connect the HD DVR’s Audio OUT to the HD TV’s Audio IN using an audio cable .
Connections 21 TV with composite connector Connect the HD DVR’s composite output jacks to the TV’s composite input jacks using a composite video cable (supplied). ✍ If your TV comes with an S Video input, use th e S Video connection instead of the composi te video connection for better picture quality .

28 Operating Instructions Auto Setup Before you can enjoy the TV Guide On Screen™ System, you will need to perform the Auto Setup. 1 When your HD DVR is first power ed on, the set up screen will automatically appear . 2 Follow the on scr een set up, selecting the types of signals your HD DVR will r eceive.
Connections 29 Changing TV channels with your HD DVR Remote Contr ol After you have successfully performed the remote contr ol programming on page 12 you will be able to operate your HD DVR and other home theater equipment with the r emote contr ol. 31 Using the Menus This section covers the MAIN MENU of the HD DVR. It is the gateway to all of the applications available on the HD DVR to customize and enjoy them. The scr een is shown in 4:3 aspect ratio. The s creen may appear dif ferently depending on your TV , F ormat and W ide Mode settings.
32 Operating Instructions Using the Recent Channels Menu The Recent Channels feature lists up to 18 of the most recently viewed channels. Only channels that have been viewed abou t a minute will be list ed. The Recent Channels list can also be accessed as a Favorite category .
Using the Menus 33 Using the F avorite Menu The Favorite feature lets you cr eate up to 13 ca tegories of favorite channels that you specify . Y ou may then quic kly tune your favorite channels by selecting a category and then selecti ng a channel within that category .

Using the Menus 35 Using the Recording History Menu The Recording History menu dis plays up to 100 of the most recent recor ding events. The Re co rdi ng Hi st or y m ay be a us ef ul ref ere nc e to any Recording E vent that may have been scheduled.
36 Operating Instructions Using the Pr efer ences Menu Y ou can access the following from the Pr eferences Menu: System, Recording, Screen, Audio, Parental Lock, CH+/- List ( Channel List), Recent Channel s Options, Favorite Options . Options Descriptions System System Menu: Allows you to display system information about your HD DVR.
Using the Menus 37 Recording Live T V Pause T ime : The Live TV Pause T ime feature allows you to set the amount of time of li ve TV programming that will be saved. For example, if you set t he Live TV Pause T ime to 30 minutes, you will be able to paus e live TV for up to 30 minutes before the paused point is no lo nger available.
38 Operating Instructions Screen Closed Ca ption On/Of f : Select Off to turn off Closed Captioning display or s elect On to display analog closed captioning with Basic Only On or digital closed captioning with Advanced and Basic On. Closed Capt ion Options: Basic Analog Services : Select CC1-CC4 to display basic Closed Captioning, if availa ble.

46 Operating Instructions Rating Guidelines There are different ratings for Movie s and TV programs . Make y our rating selections according to the table below. You also hav e th e option of blocking unrated TV programs or movies by selecti ng “ Allow ” or “ Block ”.
Using the Menus 47 V iewing blocked progr ams When you try to view a blocked channel ther e will be a message indicating the r estriction. The restriction can be temporarily r emoved until a ch annel change or playba ck ends by entering the correct passwor d when asked.

49 Digital V ideo Recorder Understanding the Status Bar The Status Bar provides information about the currently displayed program. 1 While viewing a pr ogram, press the V button or any of the T ric k Play buttons (such as PLA Y , P AUSE, etc.) to display the s tatus bar .
50 Operating Instructions Pa u si n g T V Using the Pause F eature Do not let sma ll interru ptions cause you to miss a moment of your favorite show . Use the pause feature to pause a live or recor ded program until you are r eady to begi n viewing again.
Digital Vi deo Recorder 51 Using T rick Play Features m REW and FF M 1 Press the REW (Rewind) or FF ( Fast Forwar d) button to rewind or fast forward live or recor ded programs. Each time the REW or FF button is pressed, the next available r ewind or fast forwar d speed begins.
52 Operating Instructions ------ REPLA Y and ADV ANCE 1 Press the REPLA Y or ADV ANCE button to jump back or forw ard while viewing l ive or recor ded programs. A vailable jump times incl ude 2, 5, 15, 30, 60 and 300 seconds (see page 37). 2 The previous playback mode r eturns after the program has jumped back or forwar d.

59 Using the TV Guide On Scr een™ System Y our HD DVR features the TV Guide On Scr een interactive program guide that provides an 8- day rol ling list of TV pr ogramming. This makes r ecor ding as easy as highlighting a pr ogram title. T o record the program, press RECORD button o n the re mote control.
60 Operating Instructions The Initial Guide Setup The Guide uses Setup information to provide you with show listings and l ineups in your area- --which are updated several times a day . W elcom e Screen Initial TV setup leads you to the W elcome scr een or pr ess the Guide key to begin setup.
Using the TV Guide On Screen™ System 61 TV Guide On Scr een System Components Approximately 24 hours after the Auto Setup is completed, you will see this TV Guide On Screen LISTINGS scree n whenever you pr ess the TV Guide button on your remote control or on the front pane l of your HD DVR.
