21 Recording a disc right away! This sectio n explains t he basic pro cedure fo r making digital recordings using an optical cable connected to a C D player , Digital TV or othe r digital equipment.

The operation mode is automat ically recogn ized w henever the dis c is insert ed. After y ou inser t a disc, ch eck the oper atio n mode on the disp lay windo w of the reco rder .
31 Viewing various information Y ou can check the remaining time, track number , et c. when re cordin g or duri ng stop. 1 Enter the men u and sel ect “Dis play”. 2 T urn t he jog dial to select the info rmatio n you wan t, and the n press the jog dial to ent er the se lection.

37 Recording without creating a new gr oup The re corder is fa ctor y se t to auto mati cally crea te a n e w grou p for each recor ding. T o r ecord w ithout creating a ne w grou p, set t he recor der as follo ws. While the reco rder i s st opped , ent er the menu and select “R EC Settings ” - “Grou p REC” - “Off”.
38 T o start/stop recording in sync with the sound source (Synchro- recor ding) When m aki ng a di gital re cor ding (e.g ., from a CD), this fun ction automatic ally star ts and stop s the r ecorder in synchr onizati on with the s ound sour ce. This elim inates the need for separate operat ion of the r ecorde r and the soun d source .

41 Listening t o tracks by a specific ar tist (Artist Play) (in Hi-MD mode o nly) If the track data inclu des the artist name, you can li sten to t racks by a s pecif ic artis t only . 1 Do st ep 1 and se lect “Ar tist Pla y” in step 2 of “P laying tracks in Ma in play mode” ( page 40).

51 4 T urn the jog dial to select “ OK”, and then p ress th e jog dial to release a grou p. The gr oup sett ing of t he s elec ted grou p is relea sed . Moving recor ded tracks or groups (Move) Y ou can cha nge the orde r of the r ecorded trac ks or grou ps.
52 1 While playing a track wi thin a gr oup whos e order yo u want to cha nge, enter th e menu and s elect “Edit ” - “Mov e” - “Gr oup Mo v e”. The nam e of the grou p to which the currentl y selected tra ck belongs appear s on the 3r d line in th e display .
53 1 Whil e playing the track yo u want to eras e, enter th e menu an d selec t “Edit ” - “Erase ” - “T rack Eras e”. 2 T urn the jog dial to select “ OK”, and then p ress the jo g dial to er ase the track. The track is er ased and the next track st arts to pl ay .
54 Dividing a track (Divi de) Y ou can di vide a tr ack w ith a trac k mark, creat ing a new track from the pa rt follo wing the track ma rk. Y o u can a lso make f ine adj ustments to t h e track mark position b efore making t he actual division. The tr ack num bers will increase as fo llows.
55 T o add track ma rks while recording (except w hile synchro-recording) Pres s T MARK o n th e rec order at the point you w ant to ad d a trac k mark. Y ou can use the “Time Mark” setting to add track marks a utomatical ly at speci fi ed interv als (e x cept while digit a l record ing) (page 3 6).
56 Formatting the disc (Format) When using a dis c in Hi-M D mode, you can use t he Format fu nction to restore a disc t o the condi tion it wa s in at the time of purc hase. Y ou can use this functio n only when using a disc in Hi-MD mode. • By f ormatting a disc, all data ( including no n- audio data ) will be erased.
57 Other opera tions Changing the displayed menu items (Menu Mode) Y ou can specif y the display of al l items in the me nu ( Adv anced m ode) o r only ba sic items (Si mple mode). Refer to “Lis t of menus” (page 28) to check the menu i tems tha t can not be disp laye d.
58 Preserving battery power (EL Light) W ith this fu nction, you can set the display windo w to turn of f automat ically or to stay lit dur ing battery -pow ered operat ion. Power cons umption is reduc ed when the display turns o ff automat ically . 1 Enter the menu and select “Option ” - “EL Light”.

60 Selecting the di sc mode (Disc Mode) Whe n you inse rt a 60/74/ 80-m inute standa rd disc (blank) in to the re corder, you can u se this function to speci fy use of the disc in Hi-MD mode or MD mode. When recordi ng on this r ecorder with out using a computer , set “Disc Mode” to “H i-MD ”.
61 Selecting the displ ay language Y ou can select the language use d in the displa y window . The lang uag es a vail abl e will de pend on mode l that you pu rcha sed.
62 Usin g the recorder with a com puter What you can do through connection with a computer T o use the r ecorder connect ed to a computer , you must insta ll the s oftware from the supplied CD-R OM.
63 Connecting the recor der to your computer When y ou con nect the s upplie d USB ca ble direc tly to the U SB co nnecting j ack on t he rec order, power (bus power) is su pplied from the USB port of the computer . T his allo ws the recorder to be used with out po w er being supplied from t he batte ry .
64 4 Unplug the USB cabl e from th e computer or re mov e the disc from the record er . • If you use the rec order connecte d to the comput er , it is recommended tha t you insert a fully ch arge d recha rgeab le ba ttery as a precaution a gainst powe r fail ures, disconn ection of t he USB c able or o ther unforeseen occurren ces.
65 Viewing non-audio data stored on the disc in the display window of the recor der (File List) When u sing a di sc in Hi-M D mode , you can view no n-audio da ta stored on the disc in th e di spla y wi ndo w of the recor der . The name an d size of f iles ar e disp laye d.

72 While r ecording Symptom Cause/Remedy “NO T ENOUGH PO WER TO REC” appears an d recor ding cannot be done on a 1GB Hi -MD disc. • Recording is not possible when using a 1GB Hi-MD disc even when the batter y lev el indication shows enou gh power remaining while the recorde r is stopped or pl aying.
73 Recordi ng cannot be done cor rectly . • Record ing may no t be done if the re maining re cordable ti me on the disc is 48 seconds or less (“DISC FULL” appe ars). , Replac e the dis c. 76 A new grou p canno t be crea ted. • This is due to the Mini Disc system limitations (in MD mo de only). Group information has been written to the a rea where the disc name is stored . The d isc n ame and trac k na mes are recorded in the sa me area, which ca n store a maxi mum of appr oximately 1, 700 charact ers.
77 The pl aying time of a transfe rred track is dif ferent from the time that ap pears on your compute r monitor. This is due to a calcul ation discre pancy betwe en the rec order and t he comput er . Y ou can not transfer tracks that will f ill up the r emainin g record ing ti me on the disc.
78 The reco rder doe s not work or works poorly . • The rechargeabl e battery is not charged. , Char ge the r echar geab le batter y . • The v olume is low .

Incorpora ting the n ew A TRAC3plus audio compress ion techno logy , Hi- MD is a new recording f ormat that del i vers longe r record ing times than or dinary M Ds. Hi-MD discs ca n also be used as a comput er storage medi um for non-audi o data such as text and images.
85 About “ System File” The syst em f ile is space on the d isc that is used to s tore info rmatio n othe r than au dio f iles ; for in stance, track numbe rs. If the MiniDis c were a book, the system file w ould corresp ond with the index or table of cont ents.
