Hardwar e Installation 1. Plug the power adapt er into the Power port on the conv er ter and plug the other end into an available pow er source. The red Po wer LED onthe converter should now be illuminated.
Conguring the Network Settings The IP Extender Manager software displays information in a format similar t o Window s Explorer . Any NETRS232 devices on your network are display ed in the “IP Extenders Near Me” branch of the “My IP Extender Network” tree.

Activating and Deactivating NETRS232 Ports NETRS232 por ts that hav e been detected as existing on the network are not initially activated for your PC. T o access a serial port, you must rst activate it. Y ou can activate a port on one computer , some computers, all computers, or none of the comput ers on your network.
There are two ic ons that depic t the state of the NETRS232_x ports and devices: Icon: Device available on the network. Icon with red X: Device not available on the network. Icon with green square: Under “My Comput er, ” this icon means the port is available.
Adv anced Settings Ports that have been activated on y our PC can generally be used without any further conguration. There are , however , additional conguration options available through the IP Extender Manager . P or t Modes The interface converter converts serial port data to and from TCP/IP packets over Ethernet.
Virtual por t (driv er) settings The virtual por t allows a serial port on an NETRS232 device to be used in same manner as a local serial port when the por t is congured in Windows Mode (described above). In this state, the driver for the virtual port converts local serial por t accesses int o T CP/ IP packets to be exchanged with NETRS232 port.
T o preven t this dicult y , NETRS232 Links have a “ discovery ” mode that allow s the correct NETRS232 Link por t to be f ound even when the IP address of the associated box has changed. T o use this discov er y mode, a “port binding” must be created for that virtual por t.
Binding to IP Address The IP address of a network device is assigned by either the sy stem administrator or through a DHCP server . Binding a vir tual port to an IP address will for ce that virtual por t to attempt a connection to an y device with that par ticular IP address only .
W AN Activation Activating and accessing the virtual serial port on a NE TRS232 device across a W AN can be done in two dierent wa ys, depending on how the NETRS232 device is accessible. • NETRS232 device is accessible externally – is directly accessible on the Internet.
