95741 Sixth Edition 5-15 CSL Cartridge Loading/Unloadi ng 5. I nsert the bottom-back edge of the cartridge into the CSL input bin. 6. Slid e the fr ont edge o f the c artr idge into th e CSL . 7. Slowly release the CSL spring-loaded bookend and ensure it touches the loaded cartridges.
Modes o f Operation 5-16 Sixth Edition 95741 ■ Modes of Operation The C SL has th ree dis tinct m odes of operat ion ( Figur e 5-13 ). They are: • System Mode • Auto mati c M ode • Manual Mode When power is app lied to the CSL, illumination of one of the mode LEDs indicates the CSL is receiving power and is ready for operation.
95741 Sixth Edition 5-17 Modes o f Operation Mount Message When the CSL receives a mount message from the host, one of the following occurs: • If the drive is empty and the feed c hannel contains a cartridge which hasn ’ t been previously loaded, the cartridge loads into the drive.
Modes o f Operation 5-18 Sixth Edition 95741 Automatic Mode The automatic mode allows the CSL to ope rate without operator intervent ion. Cartridges automatically loads from the input bin into the drive. Cartridges are loaded in the order they were inserted and unloaded into the output bin when the operating system is fi nished with the tape.
95741 Sixth Edition 5-19 Modes o f Operation 4. Press the Sta r t switch. 5. Unloa d the ou tput bi n when th e job is compl ete or a s necess ary. Manual Mode In manual mode, th e operator has c omplete control over CSL and dr ive operation.
Modes o f Operation 5-20 Sixth Edition 95741 Priority Mount Mode The CSL is a sequential scr atch loader . A n operator can ph ysically mount a priority cartridge directly into the unit. The ho st may issue a Load Display command with required volser .
95741 Sixth Edition 5-21 Modes o f Operation Note: If the cartridge is not inserted into the CSL feed channel properly ( Figu re 5-15 ), the CSL cannot insert the cartridge into t h e drive s lot. 3. Check to ensure the operator indicator is flas hing.
Modes o f Operation 5-22 Sixth Edition 95741 . CSL in Manual Mode This mode is used for s equential mounting of cartridg es from the input bin into the drive.
95741 Sixth Edition 5-23 Er ror and Reco very ■ Error and Recovery Note: Refer to Cha pter 7, “ Er ror and Recovery, ” fo r specific drive errors. Errors may be enco untered anytime during operation of the CSL. CSL errors , recovery, and FSCs are discussed in this section.
Error an d Recovery 5-24 Sixth Edition 95741 Drive Failure to L oad Cartridges may be load ed into the CSL incorrectly (priority mount or fr om the input bin). Sometimes, cartridges are loaded with the cartridge reels to the left ( Figu re 5-18 ). When this is d one, the CSL attempts to load the cartridge into the drive.
95741 Sixth Edition 5-25 Er ror and Reco very Recovery Process 1. Remove the incorrectly loaded cartridge : a. Press down o n the cartridge stop mechanism ( Figu re 5-18 o n page 5- 24 ). b. Grasp the cartridge and pull it from the feed channel. 2. Clear the CSL error .
Error an d Recovery 5-26 Sixth Edition 95741 Failur e to Unload Car tridge Cartridges may fail to unload from the d rive. When this malfunction oc curs, the drive or CSL may be the defe ctive FRU. The defective FRU is dependent on how far the cartridge is ejected from the drive and its relationship to the feed roller ( Figu re 5-19 ).
95741 Sixth Edition 5-27 Er ror and Reco very Clearing CSL Errors Refer to the following process t o clear CSL errors. Follow the directi ons explicitly. Note: Any tim e the operat or indicator is flashing or on solid, c lear the obvious error . Ref er to Table 5-5 on page 5- 11 for a des cription of the ope rator indicator .
Error an d Recovery 5-28 Sixth Edition 95741 Fault Symptom Codes Perfor m the following sequen ce of checks if a CSL error occurs . 1. Check the CSL operator indicator to see if it is flashing (operator s ummoned) or on solid (failure). C lear the obvious error .
95741 Sixth Edition 5-29 Er ror and Reco very 4E23 C SL encountered an error during an unlo ad. 1. Check th e CS L for an y er ror condition. 2. Rem ove th e car trid ge. 3. Press the Star t switch o nce. Not e: LOAD 4E23 will display until you press the Load or Star t swit ch.
Jammed Cart ridge 5-30 Sixth Edition 95741 ■ Jammed Cartridge A jammed cartridge in a CSL is not a common malfunction. A jammed cartridge unloads from the drive and remains on the feed roller ( Fig ure 5- 21 ). It does not eject fully into the feed channel.
95741 Sixth Edition 5-31 Jammed C artridge 1. Power off the CSL if power is applied ( “ Power On/Off CSL ” on page 5-12 ). 2. Remove all cartridges from t he input and output bins. 3. Lo cate the MUD screw within the CSL input bin (upper-left area).
Jammed Cart ridge 5-32 Sixth Edition 95741 b. Tur n the MU D screw CW until the cartridge re sts on t he feed roller . Note: Feed roller is callout number 2 in figure below.
95741 Sixth Edition 5-33 Jammed C artridge 7. R emove t he screwdriver . 8. R emove th e cartridge from the 9 840 T ape Drive. Note: The cartridge will not eject completely out o f the CSL. It will on ly eject out of the drive and stop deep inside the feed channel on the feed roller .
Jammed Cart ridge 5-34 Sixth Edition 95741 10. Power on the CSL. 11. Refer to “ P ower On/Off CSL ” on page 5-12 for the power on pr ocedures. Notes: • Refer to the figu re below for locati on o f the power switch. • If cartridges continue to jam, the CSL is defective and must be replaced by a qualified technician.
