4 ENG Introduction Introduction Congr atulations on your purchase of this S wann Digital Video Recor der (DVR). Y ou’ve made a ne choic e for keeping a watchful eye o ver your home or business. Let’ s take a moment to talk about some of the featur es this DVR oers, and how to get the most out of them.
5 ENG Connecting the DVR T op P anel of the DVR 1) Po wer LED: Will be lit whenev er the DVR is supplied power and turned on. 2) HDD LED: Will ash whenever the DVR is writing to/reading from the installed hard driv e. 3) LAN LED: Flashes rapidly when the DVR’ s network por t is sending or receiving inf ormation.
6 ENG Connecting the DVR 1) Video Inputs 1 - 4: These are your primary video inputs. The channels are labelled by number in the same or der as they will appear on your DVR’ s inter face. 2) V ideo Out: Connect a composite cable to the video or A/V input on your T V .
7 ENG Connecting the DVR Connection Diagram Connect the BNC outputs from your cameras into the BNC inputs on the rear of the DVR. Connect your cameras to power , using a power splitter (if included). Connect the power adapter(s) to a wall outlet. Y ou can connect your PC monitor to the VGA output.
8 ENG Connecting the DVR The Audio In port can be used to connect audio devices to the DVR. Obviously , your microphone probably won ’t look like that one - they ’ re often built into cameras . The rear USB 2.0 P or ts can be used to connect the provided mouse f or navigation and f or backing up footage to a USB F lash Drive.
9 ENG Basic Setup The S etup W izard Starting the DVR for the rst time: When you rst boot the DVR, it will automatically start “ The Setup Wizar d” which will guide you through the various setup options available. The wizard contains six quick setup scr eens which will allow you to choose ho w you want the DVR t o behave .
10 ENG Basic Setup The S etup W izard W izard: Time , Date , Location, Live View It ’ s impor tant to ensure that y our DVR has the correct time and date, as w ell as the correct time zone set.
11 ENG Basic Setup The S etup W izard W izard: Network Settings NIC T ype: What sort of net work you ’r e using. There are a few t o choose from. The vast majority of users will use the default op - tion of 10M/100M/1000M Self-adaptive. If you ’ re using a network other than this type, chances are y ou know about that.
12 ENG Basic Setup The Quick Menu The Quick Camer a M enu T o access the Quick Menu , right click the USB mouse once. Menu: Opens the Main Menu (see page 14). Single Screen: Opens a single channel for viewing in full- screen mode. The slide - out menu contains a list of channels to choose from.
13 ENG Basic Setup Operating the DVR L ocally If you ’ re reading this page , it means that either: • Y ou’ ve got the DVR setup , but its standard recording program isn ’t for y ou. F air enough - we cater to all requirements her e. • Y ou’ re interested in wha t other options and capabilities the DVR has.
14 ENG Basic Setup Menu Layout Playback: T o access recorded images , use the Playback menu. There are sev eral playback modes to choose from, such as standard chronolog ical playback mode, or ev ent playback mode. Export: T o copy or backup footage from the DVR, use the Export menu.
15 ENG Adv anced C onguration Congur ation: General Language: The language that the DVR’ s menus, alerts and other communications will use. Multiple languages ar e available. CVBS Output Standard: Lets you change the V ideo Out display from NTSC t o P AL.
16 ENG Adv anced C onguration Congur ation: General: DST S ettings Enable DST (check-bo x): Enable this setting if you ’ d like the DVR to adjust the time when daylight sa vings time begins. Fr om/T o: Here you can dene when dayligh t savings applies to your location.
17 ENG Adv anced C onguration Congur ation: General: M or e Settings Device Name: The name tha t the DVR considers to be its own and what it will use to reg ister an IP address with your DHCP host. Device No .: The internal device number of the DVR.
18 ENG Adv anced C onguration Congur ation: Net work: General NIC T ype: The DVR has the ability to connect to your LAN (Local Ar ea Network) at various speeds and can adjust itself accordingly depending on the network trac. It is recommended to lea ve the current default setting for the best streaming performance.
19 ENG Adv anced C onguration Congur ation: Net work: PPP oE PPPoE is an advanced prot ocol that allows the DVR t o be more directly connected via a DSL modem. This is an option for advanced users only . Username: Enter the username f or your DSL account provider .
20 ENG Adv anced C onguration Congur ation: Net work: DDNS Static and Dynamic IP Addresses In much the same way as your home network can use static or dynamic IP addresses, man y I nternet pro viders don ’t issue (or charge more f or) a static IP address for users.
21 ENG Adv anced C onguration Congur ation: Net work: Email W e suggest using Gmail as your email client - it’ s quite easy to set up an acc ount and use it solely for the DVR. W e’ ve tested the email proc edure with Gmail, and it does wor k.
22 ENG Adv anced C onguration Congur ation: Net work: UP nP Enable UPnP: UPnP makes conguring y our network easier and faster . T o use the UPnP setting on the DVR, you’ll need a router which supports this feature , with UPnP enabled. Note that many r outers which do support UPnP do not come with the featur e enabled by default.
23 ENG Adv anced C onguration Alarm Host IP: The location on your network where an IP- based alarm system is hosted. Alarm Host P or t: The port associated with the IP-based alarm system. Ser v er Port: This is the internal port that the DVR will use to send information through.
24 ENG Adv anced C onguration V ideo Output Inter face: Y ou can select from VGA or M ain CVBS. Live V ideo Mode: 2 x 2 is the default mode for the 4-CH model and 3 x 3 for the 8-CH model. This will display up to 4 video channels on-screen for the 4-CH model and up to 8 video channels on-screen for the 8-CH model at a single time.
25 ENG Adv anced C onguration Congur ation: Live V iew : V iew In Live View , you can change the display order of each camera connected - 1. Select an available viewing window on the right-hand side. 2. Double click one of the available cameras on the left-hand side that you would like t o place in the viewing window that you hav e selected.
26 ENG Adv anced C onguration Congur ation: Exc eptions An Exception is an y deviation from the DVR’ s normal behaviour - phrased another way , it ’ s like saying the DVR’ s been working ne exc ept for these events. Exc eption T ype: What event type you’ d like the DVR to r eact to .
27 ENG Adv anced C onguration Congur ation: User The Conguration: U ser menu is where you can dene and congure the di erent levels of access various users ha ve to the DVR. W e suggest that at minimum the admin account be passwor d protected, as it has ac cess to all aspects of the DVR’ s operation.
28 ENG Adv anced C onguration Pla yback: Nor mal T o initiate playback: Analog: Select the camera that you ’ d like to playback. Up to four cameras can be selected on the 4-CH model and up to eight cameras can be selected on the 8-CH model.
29 ENG Adv anced C onguration Pla yback: Event/T ag The Ev ent Search menu (above) will sho w you rec ordings that were trigger ed by the DVR detecting motion. Up to four cameras can be selected on the 4-CH model and up to eight cameras can be selected on the 8-CH model.
30 ENG Adv anced C onguration The Export: Normal menu (above) will show you all recor dings that you can export to a USB Flash Drive . F rom the Recor d T ype menu, select the type(s) of video you’ d like to playback. The options are Normal, Motion, Manual and Al l .
31 ENG Adv anced C onguration Manual: Record The Manual: Rec ord menu allows you t o override any default recor ding schedules in place. The recor ding schedule for each camera connected, can be changed . Pr essing the button next to Analog will stop recording on all cameras .
32 ENG Adv anced C onguration HDD: General The HDD: General menu allows y ou to initialize the hard drive(s) in the DVR. Don ’t initialize a drive that already has data on it, as the initialization process will er ase any information on the drive.
33 ENG Adv anced C onguration Record: Schedule Impor tant Guidelines The schedule present ed on-screen applies to one channel only . Use the C opy function to quick ly assign identical schedule layouts to multiple channels a t once. Be careful when programming y our schedule.
34 ENG Adv anced C onguration Record: Enc oding Encoding P arameters: Each video f eed of the DVR is comprised of two components, the Main Stream and the SubStream . Both the Main Stream and the SubStream ar e always active - you don ’t have t o choose one for the DVR to use as it’ s always using both.
35 ENG Adv anced C onguration Record: A dvanced Overwrite: When enabled, the DVR will record o ver the les already stor ed on the hard drive . The DVR will always recor d over the oldest les on y our hard drive rst. Using the overwrite option is advisable, as the DVR will alway s be able to recor d events as they happen.
36 ENG Adv anced C onguration Record: Holida y There will be occasions when y ou don’t w ant the DVR to recor d using its normal programming . Perhaps you requir e it to recor d more, or less, or just at di erent times. The Record: Holiday menu allows you to dene periods of time where the DVR will employ an alt er nate r ecording mode .
37 ENG Adv anced C onguration Camera Management: OSD ( On-screen Display) The C amera Management: OSD menu is where you can c on - gure the on-screen displa y for the display name , display date, date format , time format and fon t size. Camera Name: Select a name for the camera y ou’ve selected.
38 ENG Adv anced C onguration Camera Management: Image Camera: Select the camera that you w ould like to change the image settings for . Period 1: This determines the period that you would like to apply the settings for . T he default setting is for 24hrs.
39 ENG Adv anced C onguration Camera Management: Motion As Motion Detection is the default recording mode for the DVR, it’ s worth taking a moment to ensure it is properly congured . If the motion detection sensitivit y is too sensitive, then the DVR will recor d frequently or continually - an y benet of motion detection will be lost.
40 ENG Adv anced C onguration Camera Management: Motion (ctd) F alse T riggers Setting the motion detection at high sensitivity levels increases the frequency of false alarms. On the other hand, low sensitivity levels increase the risk that a sig nicant motion event (such as an intruder) will not trigger the motion detection to recor d.
41 ENG Adv anced C onguration Motion Detec tion Ar ea Congur ation T o set the MOTION DETECTION AREA In the MOTION DETECTION menu , select the AREA SE TUP (shown above) f or the channel you wish to setup the MOTION DETEC TION AREA for . • Y ou will see a grid of red bo xes.
42 ENG Adv anced C onguration Camera Management: P rivac y Mask A Privacy Mask can be used if you want to obscure part of your image. Y ou can also use this option to minimize false triggers for motion detection. Y ou can dene up to four areas per channel to mask.
43 ENG Adv anced C onguration T amper Proong can be used in scenarios where someone may cov er up the camera’ s eld of view or if they are attempting to tamper with the video signal. Camera: Select the channel that you want t o enable for tamper proong .
44 ENG Adv anced C onguration Camera Management: V ideo Loss Camera Management: Video Loss V ideo Loss is regar ded as a potential alarm event , and is considered to oc cur any time that the DVR doesn ’t receiv e an active video signal on any of its inputs .
45 ENG Adv anced C onguration Maintenance: S ystem Info If you’ re look ing at the Sy stem Information screen, y ou’ ve probably been directed to do so b y Swann T echnical Support. If we haven ’t told you t o come here , you might be wondering what all the information means .
46 ENG Adv anced C onguration Maintenance: L og I nf or mation The Maintenance: Log Informa tion menu contains information f or operation, exc eptions and information of the DVR. 1 . Set the log search conditions to r ene your search including the Start Time , End T ime , Major T ype and Minor T ype .
47 ENG Adv anced C onguration Maintenance: Impor t/Expor t The Maintenance: Import/Expor t menu allows you to import or export your current conguration settings. This will come in handy as it will save y ou time if you hav e to reset the DVR back to factor y default settings.
48 ENG Adv anced C onguration Maintenance: Upg rade The Maintenance: Upgrade menu allows you to upgrade the rmware of the DVR. Y ou’ll only need t o use these options if instructed to do so by Sw ann T echnical Suppor t. Local Upgrade: The rmware will be upda ted locally using a USB Flash Drive or USB Har d Dr ive .
49 ENG Adv anced C onguration Maintenance: Default The System Main tenance: Default menu allow s you to reset the DVR and load factory default settings.
50 ENG Adv anced C onguration Maintenance: Net Detect The Maintenance: Net Detect menu allows you to check network trac and to obtain real-time inf or mation from the DVR such as network detection, network status and sending and receiving network trac .
51 ENG Refer ence T roubleshooting Q: I can ’t login to or unlock the DVR - it say s my passwor d is wrong. A: The default username/password combination f or the DVR is “ admin” with the passwor d “12345” .
52 ENG Refer ence Addendum: T hird P ar t y Hardw are Due to its nature as a networked devic e, the DVR is often required t o operate with third party hardware . We do everything we can to ensure the DVR is compatible with as many third party devices as possible; there will alwa ys be some that require a little e xtra conguration.
