O ver view of the PTC-860 The T elxo n PTC-860 is a ba ttery-p owere d hand-held com pute r used to coll ec t, st ore, a nd transm it data . The PTC-860 automate s your da ta coll ection proce dures a nd is custom p ro gram med to efficiently ha ndle your orga nizati on’ s unique data c ol le ctio n job s .
Through t he keyboard Enteri ng data through the key bo ard i s s im i lar to opera ting a calculator . As you press a key on the PTC’ s keyboard, the corres p onding numb er or letter ap pear s on t h e d is p lay . Pressing the ENTER key sto res data in the PTC’s memory .
Once the host comput er receives the data from t he PTC, it use s that d at a to up da te its ma s t er fi le s and re cords. I n s o m e cases, the host co mputer may e v en t rans m it data ba ck to the PTC, asking you, as the PTC’s operator , to perfo rm a new task.
G etting started © PTC-860 optical model s (P TC -860, PTC-860ES, an d PT C-860NI) This manual co llecti vel y refers t o a ll three PTC-860 optical models a s PTC-860 . Instances in whic h PTC-860 refe rs specif ical ly t o the PT C-860 u nit wi ll be ob viou s (for instan ce, in a compari son bet ween mod els).
1. Remove the PTC from the box. 2. Remove all pac king mate rial fr om the PTC. S ave the packi ng mat er ia l in case t he PTC i s ever s t ored or shippe d to T elxon for ser v ic e. 3. Check the conte n ts o f the pac kage to m ake s ure you hav e rece iv e d ever y thi ng ordered.

5. If the AF A T batter y pac k or the p lastic case c ontai ning batteri es is in t he PTC-860’s battery co mpartmen t, remove it. Refer to the “Re m ovi ng the ba tt er ies” se ction on page 4 4 for the co rrec t pro cedu re.

P ar t s Figure 2 shows the parts of the PTC-8 60. © 25-pin connector On th e top of the PTC is a female RS -232-t ype 25 -pin c onne ctor for ac ce ssories a nd comm unic atio n. A cabl e or t he connector o n the bott om o f so me accesso ries p lug s i nto thi s co nnector to comm unic at e wi th t he PTC.

Data keys ar e the letter and numb er ke ys, A-Z and 0-9. Y ou use them to type data i nto the PTC. Functio n keys i nclude the F1-F5, CLEAR, ENTER/YES, and SEND keys. These keys may have diff er ent labe ls o n your PTC. They a re used to pe rform a specia l pro cedur e or f unct ion.

C onnecting accessories Many acce ssor ie s are a vai labl e for the PTC-8 60 . These includ e prin ters, adapt ors, modems, a nd bar-code r eaders. All accessorie s co nnec t to t he PTC-86 0ES and PTC-8 60 NI t hro ugh the 2 5-pin conn ector . Bar-code read ers can be con necte d to t he PTC-860 thr ough a wand po rt on the uni t’ s side.
3. If the accesso ry use s a l ocking lat ch, find the la tch plate on the top o f the PTC. The latch pl ate ha s a ke yhol e-shaped open ing in it. No te whic h sid e the wi der par t of t he ope ning is on.
6. If you are conne ct ing a n accessory direct ly t o the PTC, tighten the PTC’s locking screw and slide the accessory’ s locking latch as far to the right as it will go to lock the accessory onto the PTC. If you are conne ct ing a cabl e, c onne ct the other end to the accessory u sing th e same pr ocedu re.

C o mmunicating data The PTC- 86 0 is able to com m unic ate wi th othe r c om pute rs a nd PTCs. How it communi ca tes and how i t is co nnec te d dep ends on your data co llecti on pro gram and how you r PTC-860 is equippe d. The PTC-860 can be set up for either one- way or two-way commun icati on.
Communi c a ting through t he o ptical co upler re quires the use of an o p ti cal c ommuni cation c radle. S ee the Guide to the CS-860 Optical Communica tion Station or th e Guide to the MCO-860 Four-Bay Cradle for in struct ions. CAUTION! Do not use a PTC-86 0N I with a CS-860 or an MCO-8 6 0 in a haz a rdous loc a tion.
6. T urn o n the PTC an d the n tur n on t he device it is conn ected to. 7. T o co mmunicat e, follow the inst ruc tions for your da ta coll ec ti on program . Disconnecting a cable CAUTION ! When re m ovi ng the ca ble fro m the PTC or other d evice, gra sp the c able con nector h ead to remove th e cable.
1. Perform a ny pr ep ar ations for c loning. 2. Connect a c lone cab le to the 25-p in c onne ct or on the prima ry PTC a nd to the 25-pi n connec to r on the s ec ondar y PTC. 3. Follow your applic at io n’ s cloning p ro ce dure. 4. When the dat a or program has been clone d successfully , discon nect the clone cable f rom bo th PTCs.

R e placing the batteries The PTC-860’ s AF A T nickel-cadmium battery pack or AA alkaline batteries may be replaced when necessary . CAUTI ON! Do n ot remov e or in stal l a PTC-8 60NI’s batter y pack i n a hazardous lo cati on. T he se procedures are ap prove d for use with the P TC- 860NI onl y in non-hazardous locations.
5. Lay the batter y door face down on yo ur work sur face. The gasket on th e insid e of t he doo r shou ld be fa cing up. CAUTION! Kee p the gas k et and the insi de of the ba ttery door clean and free of d ust and dirt. Dust or dirt on the gasket c oul d keep it fr om se al ing prope rl y .
3. Mak e s ur e the + s ign on the battery pa ck i s on the s am e side a s the + s i gn on t h e PTC a nd t he stra ight edge o f the batt er y pa ck is faci ng up (see Figure 5 ); then inse rt the battery p ack dire ctly in to the bottom o f the PTC.

Backup battery Under avera g e c ondit io ns, the ba ckup ba tt er y wil l l ast a number of ye ar s. Whe n the backup ba ttery fail s, a wa rning message displ ays on the PTC’s screen. Because the ba ckup battery is a t tached to one of the internal circuit bo ar ds, i t can be rep la ced only b y a t ra ined T e lxo n servic e e n gine er .
