1-1 Chap ter 1 Introduction INTRODUCTION Y o ur T elenetics 2 185 is a digital bridge that can connect up to five sub- channel devices to a single main cha nnel device. Shar ing compu ter and communications resour ces through a 218 5 can achieve sign ificant sav- ings in har dware and line cos ts.
Telen eti cs 21 85 1-2 Main Channel Broadcast Data received on the main channel is broadca st to all su bchannels. In synchro nous operation , the correspond ing clock is also broadca st. DSR and DC D are sent to all su bchannel DTE de vices, and DTR and R TS to all subchannel DCE devi ces.
Telen eti cs 21 85 1-3 phase, frequency , and the presence of jitter could cause the sub channel and the main channel to lose synchronization. If synchronizati on is lost, data errors occur and transmis sion fails. When the 2185 is configu red for asynchrono us operat ion, the retiming buf fer is by passed.
Telen eti cs 21 85 1-4 • When opera ting wi th control sign al conten tion, the 2185 is trans- parent to the data stream . • When opera ting wi th data conte ntion, subchan nel data must be mark idle a nd 16 consecutive ma rks cannot ap pear in m id-mes- sage.
Telen eti cs 21 85 1-5 Modem-Sharing Mode In the m odem-sharing mode, the CPU or co ntroller is at a site remote from the 2185. Th e 2185's main channel connects to the CPU through a modem link (DCE). Subchannel terminals are connected directly to the 2185.
Telen eti cs 21 85 1-6 Co-Locate d T erminals Any c omb ina tio n of s u bcha nne l DT E devi ces an d s ubc hann el DCE devices is possible. For exam ple, local subchannel terminals can be co- located with modes that communicate with devices at remote sites.

Telen eti cs 21 85 1-8 T wo or more o f the 2185s can be located at one si te as shown i n Figure 1-4. Alternatively , the units may be located at sites remote from each other , and connect via modems.

Telen eti cs 21 85 2-2 UNPACKING Packing M aterials Y our 218 5 is w rapped in re-usable, sh ock-abs orbent pack ing m aterial. T elenetics recomme nds that y ou keep this packing material and the shipping ca rton in case the un it must be s tored, s hipped, or r eturned to T elenetics fo r service.
Telen eti cs 21 85 2-3 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE Equipment Assembly The 2185 is shipp ed as a completely assembled unit with the printed cir- cuit board and po wer supply sub-assemblies already ins talled.
Figure 2-1. Rear Panel Assembly Note : The 2185 may have its main channel or any subchannel con fig- ured as DCE or DTE.Any necessary signal crossov ers are performed internally .

3-1 Chap ter 3 Operation and Configu ration INTRODUCTION This chapter descr ibes the 2185 oper ating controls and indicat ors, how to configure and operate yo ur 2185 using t hese operatin g controls, an d how to p ower-up an d power-d own th e unit. Once con figured, your 2185 operate s unattended , witho ut operator intervention.

Telen eti cs 21 85 3-3 FUNCTION SWITCHES The front- panel-mounted contro ls consist of three Dual In- line Package (DIP) function switches. Switch banks one a nd two contain eight indi- vidual switches and switch three co ntains six i ndividual switches.
Telen eti cs 21 85 3-4 Switch se gments 1-6 t o 1-8 are us ed to set t he data rate on the 218 5. See T able 3-2 for i nformation on set ting these switc hes.
Telen eti cs 21 85 3-5 In certain sy nchrono us confi gurations , the internal clock gen erator is not used and th e data rate is determined by the selected extern al clock source. (For det ails, refer to the section on functi on switch segmen ts 2-5 and 2-6 - Clock Routing .
Telen eti cs 21 85 3-6 W ith synchronous data tran smissio n, the data retiming buffer must be used excep t when all subc hannels are con nected to DTE device s. The data retiming buffer ma y then be byp assed to permi t passi ng B isynchro- nous multiple messages in Data Cont ention mod e.

Telen eti cs 21 85 3-14 Function Switch Three Function switch three is a six-segment D IP switch used to configure the data interfaces for each channel. Set to U p (DTE) if the channel is connected t o a DTE -type device such as a CPU port or a ter minal (this configu res the 2185 interface as Data Circuit-terminati ng Equipment - DCE).
Telen eti cs 21 85 3-15 Digital Bridging Application Example One of the mos t common application s for your 2185 i s as a digital bridge. In this instance, a 2185 is used to connect a large number of loc al an d rem ote asyn chronou s t ermi nal s to a main fra me c ompu te r at a central site.

Telen eti cs 21 85 3-28 OPERATION Once you successful ly power-up yo ur 2185, it is fully operational and does not requir e any further initialization procedures. Once con figured, your 2185 operate s unattended wit hout operator inter - vention. Occasiona l monitoring of the LED status indicators is recommended.
4-1 Chap ter 4 Operation and Configu ration MAINTENANCE PHILOSOPHY Prevent ive Maintena nce There is no preventive ma intenance necessary on your T elenetics 2185 other than the occ asional removal of dust that a have settled on the unit. Use a soft cloth to remove dust that may have buil t up on the outside of the unit.
Telen eti cs 21 85 4-2 If all equi pmen t in the n etwork is functionin g p roperly and anti-stream- ing al arms are occurri ng, the probab le cause is that the subchannel devices are sending valid messag es longer than 23 seconds. If this is the case, disable an ti-streaming.
Telen eti cs 21 85 4-3 When contacting T elenetics, you receive a T elenetics Return Material Authorization (RMA) Control Number . Th is RMA Contro l Number should be clearly marked o n t he return equipme nt shipping container (s) for easy identification and fast er service.
