1 Intr oduction This guide pro vides procedures for installing the BayStack 400-ST1 Cascade Modules into suppo rted Bay Networ ks BayStack 450 switches that ar e configured with B ayStack 450 software version V1.1.0 or later . Y ou can determine the software v ersion of your switches b y accessing the System Characteristics screen for each switch.
2 Find t he Bay Networks prod uct for which you need documentation. Then locate the specific cate gory and model o r versio n for your har dware or soft ware product . Using Adobe Acrobat R eader , you can open the man uals and release notes, sear ch for the sections you need, and print t hem on most st andard printer s.
3 Contents of Shipment Each BayStack 400-ST1 shipm ent includes the following items ( Figur e 1 ): • One BayStack 400 -ST1 Cascade Module • One .30 meter (1 2 inch) cascade cable; part numb er 303978- A. • This guide ( Installing the BaySta c k 400-ST1 C as c ade Module ).
4 If an y items are missing or damaged, contact the sales agent or the cu stomer service representati ve from wh om you purchased the BayStack 400-ST1 cascade module.
5 Cascade A Out Connector Provides an attachmen t point for connecting this unit t o another unit via the cascade cable. A re t u r n cable fro m another unit’ s Cascade A Out conn ector to this unit’ s Cascade A In connector c ompletes the stack connection (see the ex ample shown in Figu re 3 ).
6 Cascade A I n Connector Provides an attachment point for accepting a cascade cable connection from an adjacent unit in the stack. A re t u r n cable from this unit’ s Cascade A Out connecto r to the adjacent unit’ s Casca de A In connector completes the stack connection (see the e xample shown in Figure 3 ).
7 Base Unit Descr iption The base unit is a unique stack un it that can be selected by the Unit Select switch o n the front -panel of the 400-ST1 cascade module.
8 • Stack IP MA C address --- The s tac k IP MAC add r ess is automatically assigned during the stack in itialization: The base unit’ s MA C address, with a softwar e offset, is used for the stack IP MA C address.
9 • T emporary Base Unit --- If an assigned base unit fails, the next unit in the stack order automatically becom es the new temp or ary b ase unit . This change is ind icated by the Base LED on the temporary base unit’ s LED displa y panel turn ing on (ye llow).
10 Stack Configurations As sho w n in Figur e 4 , the cascade connectors and cables on the 400-ST1 front-panel provide the ability to stack up to eight BayStack switches. W ith 400-4TX MD As installed in each switch, the stack can accom modate a maximum of 224 switch p orts.

13 Certain n etwork m anagement station (NMS) applicatio ns assume a stack do wn configura tion for the graphical user interface (GUI) that represents the stack (see Figur e 5 on page 12 ). F or this reason, Bay Netwo rks recom mends that you alw ays configu re the top unit in the stack as the base unit.
14 Redundant Cascade Stacking Feature BayStack 400-ST1 Cascade Modules allo w you to connect up to 8 units into a red undant cascade stack. If any single unit fails or if a cable is accidently disconnected, other units in the stack remain o perational, without int erruption.

16 Installation This secti on describes ho w to connect u p to eight BayStack 1 0/100/1000 Seri es switches into a red undant stack. The switch stack can consist of an y combination of BayStack 4 50-24T and Ba yStack 450-12T switch models. Before installing y our equipment, revie w the previous sections of this guide.
17 Installing the 400 -ST1 Cascade Module The Cascade Module slot on the BayStack 450 switch can accommodate a single 4 00-ST1 Cascade Module. T o install a 400-ST1 Cascade Module into the Cascade Module slot, follo w these steps: 1. Unplug the A C power cord fr om the back of the switch.

19 Installing and Connecting Multiple Switches The procedure to install an d connect multip le switches is similar for tabletop, shelf, or stand ard 19-in ch utility rack installation s. T o install multiple swit ches, follow these steps: 1. Install one unit at a time in the rack or on the sh elf or ta ble top .
20 5. Set the Unit Select switch f or the base unit to the Base (up = Ba se) positio n ( Figure 9 ). 6. Set the Unit Select switch f or all other units in the stack to th e Off (down = Off) position Only one unit in the stack can be the base unit. Figure 9.
21 7. Connect the units using the supplied cascade cables ( Figu re 10 ). a. Connect one end of a cascade cable to the Cascade A Out connector on th e Base Unit (unit 1).
22 b . Connect the other end of the cascad e cable to the cascade A In connector on the unit just below the base unit (un it 2), or just ab ove the base unit if cascading up t he stack. c. Continue attaching the cascade cables until the last unit is configured.
23 Connecting P ower When the stack is init ially po w ered up, the software automaticall y ass igns unit numb ers to the units (t he indi vidual switches in the stack). T he unit numbers correspond to the phys ical stack power up/initialization sequence, beginning wi th the base un it as unit 1.
24 One or tw o A C po wer strips may be req uired to accommodate the quantity of switches in the stack. 3. A pply power to the A C power strip. Set the A C power strip On/Of f switch to On (or connect th e AC power s trip to a groun ded A C po wer outlet).
25 Figure 11. V erifying the Instal lation • The Base LED f or the base un it only is on. If one (or more) Base LEDs ar e blinking, no unit (or more than on e unit) is configu red as the base unit. If the LEDs o n any of the units in the stack are not as shown in F igure 11 , cycle the power to the stack and v erify the LEDs.
26 Modifying an Existing Stac k Configuration This section p r ovides e xam ples of how to mo dify an existing stack con figuration. T he examples assume the stack conf igur ation is operation al with connected stations.
27 Assigning a New Base Unit to the Stack T o assign a new base unit to the s tack, complete the fol lowi ng step s: 1. Set the U nit Select switch on the original base uni t to the Of f position. See Figur e 9 on page 20 for details ab ou t the Unit Select switch.
28 Adding Units to the Stac k This sect io n des cri b es ho w to add one or more un it s t o the middle of a stack or to the end of a stack. Adding Un its to the Mid dle of a Stac k T o add one or more units to th e middle of a stack, complete the following steps: 1.

30 5. Reconnect the cascade cable from unit 2 to the Cascade A In connector of (new) unit 5. 6. Connect a cascade cable from the C ascade A Out connector of unit 5 to the Cascade A In connector of unit 6 . 7. Connect a cascade cable from the C ascade A Out connector of unit 6 to the Cascade A In connector of unit 3 .

32 4. Connect a cascade cable from the C ascade A Out connector of unit 4 to the Cascade A In connector of unit 5 . 5. Connect a cascade cable from the C ascade A Out connector of unit 5 to the Cascade A In connector of unit 6 . 6. Reconnect the cascade max-r eturn cable fr o m unit 1 to the Cascade A Out co n nector of unit 6.
33 Remo ving/Replacing Ad jacent Units T o remove/rep lace adjacent units from an oper at ing stack, complete the following steps (see Figu re 14 ): 1.
34 2. Remove the cascade cable fr om the Cascade A In connector at unit 5. 3. Remove the units (units 3 and 4) and in stall replacement units as r equ ired.

36 Upgrading the Ba yStac k 450 Swit ch Firmware The BayStack 450 switch firmwa re provides a code loa d facility that allows you to upgrade the f i rmware image ov er any switch port, in cluding any MD A ports. Y ou mu st upgrade th e BayStack 450 swit ch fi rmware image before y ou install the BayStack 400-ST1 Ca scade Module.
37 3. After the BayStack 450 boot co de im age is downl oaded, click on V ersion 1.1.0 at the BayS tack 450 agen t link. Fo llow t he prompts t o downloa d the BayStack 4 50 agent image. The ag ent image filename is b450110 2.img Be sure to downl oad the BayStack 45 0 boot code image first , then download the B ayStack 450 agent image.
