If possible, sche dule a variety of tas ks into your workday . If you must spend long periods at the computer , finding ways to break up the rou tine can r educe stress and impr ove your effici ency .
Satellite R10 3-5 Getting Started ■ Do not drop the computer nor apply excessive impact on the computer . Do not leave the computer in an automobi le where the computer is exposed to direct sunbeam. ■ Do not put the computer in T ablet mode in a bag.
Satellite R10 3-6 Getting Started 1. Connect the powe r cord to the AC adaptor . Connecting the power cord to the AC adaptor (2-pin plug) Connecting the power cord to the AC adaptor (3-pin plug) 2. Connect the AC adaptor’ s DC output plug to the DC IN 15V jack on the back of the computer .
Satellite R10 3-7 Getting Started Connecting the adaptor to the computer 3. Plug the power cord into a live wall ou tlet. The Battery and DC IN indicators on the front of the computer should glow . Opening the display The computer’ s LCD display panel can be rotated in a wide range of angles for optimal viewing.
Satellite R10 3-8 Getting Started T urning on the power This section describes ho w to turn on the power . The Power button LED indicates the status. Refer to the Power indicators section in Chapter 6, Power and Power -Up Modes. 1. Open the computer’ s LCD display panel.
Satellite R10 3-9 Getting Started T urning off the power The power can be turned off in one of the following modes: Shut down (Boot), Hibernation or Standby mode. Shut Down mode (Boot mode) When you turn off the power in Shut Down mode no data is saved and the computer will boot to the op erating system’ s main screen.
Satellite R10 3-10 Getting Started ■ Y ou can return to your previous working en vironme nt immediately when you turn on the computer . ■ Saves power by shutting down the system when the computer receives no input or hardware access for the du ration set by the System hibernate feature.
Satellite R10 3-11 Getting Started Standby mode If you have to interrupt your work, yo u can turn off the power without exiting from your softwar e. Data is maintain ed in the computer ’ s main memory . When you turn on the power again, you can continue workin g right where you left off.
Satellite R10 3-12 Getting Started Executing standby Y ou can enter standby mode in one of three ways: 1. Click start , click T ur n Off Computer and click Stand By . 2. Close the computer’ s LCD display panel. This feature must be enabled. Refer to the Setup Action tab in TOSHIBA Power Saver Utility described in the Control Panel.

Satellite R10 4-2 Operating Basi cs Using the T ablet PC Pen and Reserve Pen Y ou can use the T able t PC Pen to execute actions and ent er data. Hold the T a blet PC Pen in a natural position an d tap, pr ess or trace on the screen lightly . Before you begin using your comp uter for the first ti me, you will need to calibrate the T ablet PC Pen.
Satellite R10 4-3 Operating Basi cs Observe the foll owing precautions on the handling of the T ablet PC Pen. ■ Do not tap or press the T ablet PC Pen forcefully against the Display screen.
Satellite R10 4-4 Operating Basi cs Removing the T ablet PC Pen Remove the T ablet PC Pen as described below . 1. Gently push the T ablet PC Pen down. The pen rises up slightly . Removing the T ablet P C Pen 2. Pull the T ablet PC Pen to remove it fr om the T ablet PC Pen slot.

Satellite R10 4-6 Operating Basi cs Removing the Reserve Pe n (optional) Remove the Reserve Pen as describ ed below . 1. Remove the battery pack. 2. Pull the insulator an d detach the Re serve Pen fr om the Pen holder ( ➀ ) and remove the Reserve Pen ( ➁ ).

Open the LCD displ ay panel to the upright position. Ch eck that the angle of the keyboard and the LCD display panel is 90 degr ees.

Satellite R10 4-10 Operating Basi cs Method 1: Changing the scr een orientation using TOSHIBA Accelerometer Utilities When the TOSHIBA Accelerometer Utilities are enabled, you can invoke the Start menu, switch active windows or lau nch pre defined applications by shaking the computer vertically or horizontally , or tilting it.
Satellite R10 4-11 Operating Basi cs It is safe that you hold the computer with both hands horizontally as shown in the example. Shake the computer Method 2: Changing the screen orientation using Cr oss Function Button 1. Press the Cr oss Funct ion Button for more than one second.

Satellite R10 4-13 Operating Basi cs Disconnecting USB floppy disk d rive When you have finished using the USB floppy disk drive, foll ow the procedur es below to disconnect it: 1. W ait for t he indicator light to go out to make sure all floppy disk activity has stopped.
Satellite R10 4-14 Operating Basi cs Removing the optical media drive Inserting a module Insert the Slim Select Bay HD D adaptor as described below . 1. Insert the Slim Select Bay HDD adaptor in the compute r as shown below and press until the ejector clicks.
Satellite R10 4-15 Operating Basi cs Using optical media drives The text and illustrations in this section refer primarily to the optional media drive. However , operation is the same for other optical drive in the Slim Select Bay . The full-size drive provides high-performance exec ution of CD/ DVD-ROM-base d programs.
Satellite R10 4-16 Operating Basi cs 2. Grasp the disc tray gently and pull until it is fully opened. Pulling the disc tray open 3. Lay the CD/DVD, label side up, in the disc tray . Inserting a CD/DVD 4. Press gently at the center of the CD/DVD until you feel it click into place.
Satellite R10 4-17 Operating Basi cs 5. Push the center of the disc tray to cl ose it. Pr ess gently until i t locks in to place. Closing the CD/DVD disc tray Removing discs T o remove the CD/DVD, follow the steps below . 1. T o pop the disc tray partially open , press the eject button.

Satellite R10 4-19 Operating Basi cs Before writing or r ewriting Please observe the following points when you write or rewrite the data. ■ W e recommend the following manufacturers of CD-R and CD-RW media. Media quality can affect write or rewrite success rates.
Satellite R10 4-20 Operating Basi cs When writing or r e writing Note the following when you write or rewrite a CD-R or CD-RW . ■ Always copy data from the HDD to the CD. Do not use cut-and-paste . The original data will be lost if there is a write err or .
Satellite R10 4-21 Operating Basi cs Important message Before you write or rewrite to CD-R /RW or DVD-R/-R W/+R/+RW/-RAM disc, read and follow all setup and operating inst ructions in t his section. If you fail to do so, the DVD Super Multi drive ma y not function properly , and you may fail to write or rewrite, lose data or incur other damage.

Be careful to check the di sc for dirt or damage before you use it. ■ The actual nu mber of rewrites to CD-RW , DVD-RW , DVD+RW or DVD-RAM is affected by the quality of the disc an d the way it is used.

Satellite R10 4-28 Operating Basi cs ■ While recor ding video to DVD or tape, please close all other programs. ■ Do not run software like a screen saver because it can put a heavy load on the CPU. ■ Do not run communication applications like a modem or a LAN.
