The FCC Wants You To Know The FCC W ant s Y ou T o Know This scanner has been teste d and found to comply with the limits for a scanning receiver , pursuant to Part 15 of the FC C Rules . These limits are designed to provide r easonab le protec tion again st harmf ul interfer ence in a resident ial inst allation.
up these transmissions. Do not open your scanner ’s case to make any modifications that could allow it to pick up transmissions that are illegal to monitor .
Introduction Introduction Y our BCD996T scanner is a state-of-the-art scanner radio with T runk T racker IV™ and automatic scanning capabilities. Y ou can store in the dynamic memory conventional frequencies su ch as police, fire/emergency , marine, air , amateur , and other communications.
Note: The scanner ’s freq uency coverage is not continuous and does not include the cellular telephon e or UHF TV bands. Feature Highlight s General Close Call™ RF Capture T echnology — Instantly de tect s and tunes to nea rby transmissions with no additional prog ramming.
Introduction Channel Lockout — Y ou can lock out any system, group, frequency , or channel while scanning. If you lock ou t a system or group, an y channels belonging to that system or group are also locked out. Frequency Loc kout — Y ou can lock out up to 5 00 frequencies (250 permanently locked out + 250 temporarily locked out).
Automatic Channel Step — Accepts frequencies on any valid channel step, even if it does not fall within the band plan’s default step. Frequency S tep — Let s you select a fre quency step (5, 6.25, 7.5, 8.33, 10, 12.5,15, 20, 25, 50 or 100 kHz) for manual mode and search mode.
Introduction Control Channel Only Scanning — If the scanner is set to scan a Motorola system, you can set it so it scans using only contro l channel data. Y ou do not have to program voice channel frequencies in to memory in this mode as long as all possible control chan nels are programmed.
Quick Search — Let s you search from the currently-tuned freq uency if you are searching a conventional system. Auto S tore Frequency AutoS tore — Automatically stores all active frequencies into the selected conven tional system. T alk Group ID AutoS tore — Automatically stores all ne w t alk group ID’ s into a channel group you select.

2. Program the system based on the plan. Enclosed with the materials provided with your scan ner is a reprinted article from Popular Communications , which, in clear , easy-to-und erstand langu age, tells you how to start the prog ramming session. The article also includes a glossary of terms and other valuable data.

channels, then press the GQK within 2 se conds. Systems can have up to 20 channel groups, and multip le channel groups can be assigned to the same GQK. What is Scanning? Unlike standard AM or FM radio st ations, most two-way communications do not transmit continuously .
Understanding Scanning and the BCD996T even interfere with each other to the point where it is impossible to clearly receive any of the st ations. A scanner , such as your BCD996T , equipped with CTCSS and DCS, can code each received frequency with a spec ific sub-audible CTCSS or DCS frequency or code.
Repeater Operation Repeater systems use two frequ encies: one transmits from the radio to a central repeater; the other tr ansmit s from the repeater to other radios in the system. With a repeater-based system, the repeater is located on top of a t all building or on a radio tower that provides great visibility to the area of operation.
Understanding Scanning and the BCD996T T runked Scanning While conventional scanning wor ked great while there were only a few group s wanting to use the fr equencies, with the advent of smaller , lower-cost radios more and more agencies and businesses wanted to take advant age of the utility of 2-way radio.
channels (typically 10, 20, or 28 to tal channels). When a user presses Push T o T alk (PTT) to transmit, their radio first sends the person’ s t alk group information to the control channel. The computer then assigns that talk group to a specific voice channel and transmits that dat a over the control channel.
Understanding Scanning and the BCD996T radios in that talk group will switch to the correct channel. T o program an EDACS system in your scanner , you will need to know both the frequencies used by the system and th e LCN for each fre quency .
data matches a t alk group ID that you have stored in the t alk group ID list and have not locked out. L TR systems are fr equently programmed so that each radio has a unique u ser ID.
Understanding Scanning and the BCD996T I-Call (Motorola/EDACS) I-calls are direct unit-to-un it transmissions that are not heard by other system users. Y our BCD996T can receive I-call transmissions. See “Setting I-Call (Motorola and EDACS Systems Only)” on Page 72 for more information about monitoring I-call transmissions.
