2 The HH985 is a watertight, por table tw o-way VHF transceiv er . It is compact, lightw eight, rugged and fits easily in your hand. This hand- held VHF mar ine radio will giv e you consistent, outstanding performance in vir tually all conditions and situations.

5 Mounting the Drop-in Char ger 1. Mount the drop-in charger to either a counter or wall. 2. Plug one end of the AC adapter into the wall outlet and the other end into the drop- in charger . Attaching the Antenna Attach the antenna to the HH985. Be sure the antenna is fir mly seated.
6 Attaching the Battery Pac k 1. Slide the batter y pack onto the bottom of the radio . 2. Use a coin or screwdriv er to tur n the screw that connects the batter y pack to the HH985. Be sure the battery pack fits tightly against the HH985's body .

8 + When you press an y ke y (except PTT), a shor t tone sounds. + When you turn on your HH985, it is automatically tuned to channel 16, the United States Coast Guard frequency for distress, saf ety , and calling. + See the foldout in the front of the oper ating guide for b utton, knob, and k ey positions .
9 Selecting a Channel 1. T urn on your HH985. 2. T o select a higher channel, press the s button. 3. T o select a lower channel, press the t button. + T o change the channel continuously , press and hold the s or t button f or more than 1 second.
10 Monitoring W eather Channels The HH985 has 10 preprogrammed w eather channel frequencies, represented by 0 through 9. 1. T o listen to the weather channels in your area, press WX . WX appears on the displa y . 2. T o mov e up, press the s button. 3.
11 T riple Watch T r iple W atch mode monitors channels 16 and 9 f or a signal while you listen to the currently selected channel. The marine radio checks channel 16 and 9 f or activity every 2 seconds. 1. T o select T r iple W atch mode, press and hold the 16/9/TRI button f or 2 seconds.
12 W eather Alert W eather Aler t allows your HH985 to function as a se v ere weather wa r ning radio . If the NOAA issues a se vere weather w ar ning while the Weather Alert is tur ned on, the HH985 sounds an aler t tone. Y ou will then hear the emergency weather broadcast.
13 NWR-SAME Alert In addition to the conv entional Weather Alert, your HH985 is compatib le with NWR-SAME Weather Alert. Specific Area Message Encoding (S.A.M.E.) are NOAA’ s coded emergency weather signals that identify a specific geographic area affected b y an emergency .
14 Registering FIPS Code Six digit FIPS Codes are programmab le in 15 channels, Number 1~15 f or NWR-SAME Weather Aler t. Contact the National W eather Ser vice at 1-888-NWR-SAME for the FIPS Codes in the area of interest, or visit www .noaa.gov/nwr/indexnw .
15 USA, International and Canadian Channels 1. The HH985 is initially set for USA marine channels when you turn on y our radio . 2. T o listen to inter national mar ine channels, press U/I/C once. 3. T o listen to Canadian marine channels, press U/I/C again.
16 Scanning 1. T o begin scanning the programmed channels, press the SCAN button. SCAN and TRIPLE appear on the display . 2. T o stop scanning, press the SCAN button once more. SCAN and TRIPLE disappear from the display . + Scanning star ts from the lowest to highest channel and stops when it finds an active channel.
17 Lighted Keys and Displa y T o light the display and k eypad f or about 5 seconds, press the Light/Lock ke y or any other ke y e xcluding the TX key . + If you press an y button other than the Light/Lock ke y while the display and k eypad are lit, it remains in the lit status for another 5 seconds.
18 Ke y Lock T o prev ent accidental entr ies, you can lock the k eypad. 1. Press and hold the Light/Lock k ey f or 2 seconds. The unit will beep two times to confir m that the ke ypad is locked with LOCK indication on the display . 2. T o unlock the k eypad, press and hold the Light/Lock k ey again for 2 seconds .
