Intr oducing The T elephone 1.1 Using This Guide This user’ s guid e describes your Comdial Impact telephone and tells you ho w to use it. T he sections in this introductory chapter help you become familiar with your telephone’ s controls and indicato rs.
Y ou can program man y of the buttons on yo ur telephone to enhance the unit’ s versatility and usability . These programming instructions are found in the follo wing chapte r: 9 Program ming Y our T elephone T wo DSS/BLF consoles are a v ailable for expanding a station’ s memory butto n capacity—a 24-button and a 48-button model.
1.2 Overvie w This user’ s guid e cove rs fi ve dif ferent telephone models. T here are se vera l differences as note d below . • The 8112N and 8212N do not ha ve speakerpho ne capability . Therefore, you must lift the h andset to perform an y telephone functions: making calls, answering calls, programming your telephone, etc.
1.3 Using Y ou r Speakerpho ne On the speakerphone-equipped models (8124S-**, 8112S-**, and 8212S-**) the microphone and loudspeak er are farther a way from you than when you use a handset. Both the signal from the loudspeaker and the signal to the microphone must be strengthened.
Speakerp hone User Guidelines • Both parties cannot talk at the same time. You must wait for silence out of your loudspeaker before talking. You must stop talking to hear the other party. • Background noise may prevent the sound-activated switches from operating properly.

1.4 Knowing Y our T elephone’ s Functions Y our telephone provides man y versatile features for your use. These features are explained in terms of what the y allow you to do. Refer to sectio n 1.5, Understanding What The Lights Mean , for info rmation about the lights associated with your telephone’ s b uttons.
Micropho ne Opening • Allo ws hands-free operation of spea kerphone (not a v ailable on 8112N and 8212N). Mute Button • K eeps the person on the line from hearing your con versation (no t av ailable on 8112N). Prog rammable Buttons • Allo w you to store numbers for automatic dialing functions.
1.5 Understan ding What the Lights Mean The lights on your telephone indicate the status of lines, features, and intercom. Next to a Direct Station Select (DSS)/ Busy Lamp Field (BLF) button: S t e a d yr e d=s t a t i o ni si nu s e ,o ri nD oN o tD i s t u r b .
Next to the MESSA GE button (8212S an d 8212N only): Flashing red = message awaits pickup. Next to the SPEAKER b utton: On steady (with telephone on hook and b usy) = speakerphone mode activ e. On steady (with telephone on hook and idle) = background music turned on.
1.7 Adusting Y our T elephone’ s P edestal (Model s 8212S and 8 212N onl y) An adjustable pedestal is provided on your telephone to allo w you to select the most comfortable vie wing angle. When you recei ve your telephone, it will be in its lo west position — down flu sh against the pedestal.
Ans wering Calls 2.1 Answering Calls • To answer a call that is ringing at your telephone, 1. If the light is flashing orange, lift handset. —OR— If the light is red, press the flashing line and lift handset. • To answer a call using the speakerphone, 1.
2.2 Answer ing Subdued-Off Hook V oice Announcements (SOHV A) Calls NO TE:Y our telephone may be arrange d to receive a subdued off- hook voic e announcement (SOHV A). If it is, an intercom c aller may break into your outside call and deliver a message to your telephone recei ver fo r you to hear .
Making Calls 3.1 Making Calls NO TE: If the installer has enabled your system with Specialized Route Access (SRA), the system returns a special intercom tone when y o ud i a lo u t( u s i n gI N T E R C O M9 ,o rap r e p r o g r a m m e dl i n e group b utton).
If you s elect a li ne, press HOLD then dial code. 2. When called party answers, lift handset. • To redial the last number that yo u dialed at your telephone, 1. Dial # . If you s elect a li ne, press HOLD then dial # . 2. When called party answers, lift handset.
• If you are required to enter an account c ode when making outside calls, 1. Select line. 2. Press INTERCOM and dial ✳ 04 . 3. Dial your account, hear outside dial tone, and dial outside number . 4. When called party answers, lift handset. • To use Toll Restriction Overr ide at a station, 1.
3.2 Using A utomatic Call-Back • To arrange for the system to call back when a busy station becomes idle or rings with no answer, 1. Make intercom call and hear busy signal or ring-back tone. 2. Dial ✳ 6 . 3. Hang up. (When called s tation becomes idle or is operated by its user , your station will ring.
Placing Calls On Hold 4.1 Placing Calls On Hold • To place a call on hold , 1. Press HOLD . 2. Hang up handset. • To return to c all that is on hold, 1. L ift handset and press line button with f lashing green light. • To place a call on exclusive hold, 1.
• To park a call, 1. When on a line, press INTERCOM . 2. Dial ✳ , then dial park orbit access code ( 91 - 99 ) (if chosen orbit is busy , dial alternati ve orbit number). 3. Hang up handset. 4. Use paging feature to announce call and park orbit access code if necessary .
T ransferring Calls 5.1 T ransferring Outside Calls • To announce a call before transferring it, 1. Answer outside call. 2. Press TRANSFER/CONFERENCE (call is placed o n hold). 3. Dial station number . 4. Upon answer, a nnounce the call. 5. Hang up the handset (call is transferred).

Conferencing Calls 6.1 Conferencing Stations T ogether • To conference any combination of inside stations and outside lines, 1. Make first call. 2. Press TRANSFER/CONFERENCE . 3. Make next call and press TRANSFER/CONFERENCE to establish conference. 4.

Using The Other T elephone Features 7.1 Using the Recall/Flash Feature • If your system has been configured for flash, 1. Press TA P to generate a timed flash signal while on line. • If your system has been configured for recall, 1. Press TA P to disconnect as if you had hung up.
• To answer tele phone paging from any station, 1. L ift handset. 2. Press INTERCOM ,d i a l 88 , and meet paging party on line. • To enable or disable the Tracker pager at your station, 1. Press INTERCOM . 2. Dial ✳ 06 to enable, or #06 to disable.
7.3 Switching Between Pulse and T one • To convert to tone while dialing—if the loca l telephone service is pulse (rotary), 1. Press # at point in dialing sequence w here con v ersion to tone is required. NO TE: Pulse/T one switching can be programmed into memory k e ys by pressing # during number storage.
7.5 Activ ating The Cal lF o r w a r d Outside System (CFOS) Feature The Call Forw ard Outside System (CFOS) feature gi v es DSU II station users the ability to forw ard line calls to a remote locatio n outside the system. CFOS remains in ef fect in the e vent of a loss of po wer or a system reset.
7.6 Engaging A utomatic Set Relocation NO TE: If this feature has been enabled by your system progra mmer , the message-waiting light w ill flash for sev eral seconds when you connect your telephone to another location.
7.7 Understanding The D A T A Button Light The optional Data Interface Unit (DIU) pro vides connections for your standard multiline digital telephone and an Industry Standard T elephone (IST) de vice.
7.8 Using The IMIST Module Impact SCS 8212S-** and 8212N-** speakerphon es equipped with the optional IMIST module c an support an IST device (modem, F AX machine, industry-standard telephone, etc.) in addition t o the speakerpho ne. Depending on system programming, the IST device may be used to make outgoing calls and recei ve incoming calls.
7.9 Bac kgrou nd Music If supplied by your main system, music can be set to play through your telephone speaker . • To turn music ON, 1. Press INTERCOM ✳ 1 (speaker light will turn on). 2. Adjust loudness of music with speaker volume co ntrol. • To turn music OFF, 1.
Sending And Receiving Non-V e rbal Messages 8.1 Lighting The Message Light If the system installer designates your speakerphone as a central message desk or programs it to have message-wait originate ability , you can turn on the message-waiting light of an y other telephone.
• To receive a message a t an alerte d station, 1. Observe flashing HOLD or MESSA GE light. 2. Press INTERCOM, then HOLD; or MESSA GE (connection to station that left me ssage is automatic). • To turn on the message waiting light at another station, 1.
