I NSTALLING TO A USB P ORT 5 Part 1: Installing Y our Scanner I NSTALLING TO A USB P ORT This section of the guide contains instructions for connecting y our Visioneer scanner to a USB port. I f you ar e connecting the 6400 scanner to a parallel port, see “Installing to a P arallel P ort” on page 11 for more information.
6 V ISIONEER 6200/6400 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. F ollow the instructions on the screen to install the P aperP ort software on your computer . During installation, a message tells y ou to connect the scanner to the computer . 4. F ollow the steps in the next section to connect the scanner .
I NSTALLING TO A USB P ORT 7 STEP 2: C ONNECTING TO A USB P ORT The V isioneer scanner connects to any av ailable USB port. Check your computer ’ s user ’ s guide for its USB port locations. T o connect the Visioneer scanner to a USB port: 1. Plug one end of the USB cable into an av ailable USB port.
8 V ISIONEER 6200/6400 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. Plug the other end of the USB cable into the scanner ’ s USB port. If the plug does not attach easily , make sure that you ar e plugging it in correctly . Do not force the plug into the connection.
I NSTALLING TO A USB P ORT 9 5. T urn the scanner over to see the locking tab on the bottom. Slide the locking tab to the unlocked position. 6. Plug the po wer adapter into an A C (wall) outlet. The following diagram sho ws the 6400 scanner connected to a computer .

I NSTALLING TO A P ARALLEL P ORT 11 I NSTALLING TO A P ARALLEL P ORT This section explains ho w to connect the Visioneer scanner to a parallel port. If you are connecting a 6200 scanner , you must connect it to a USB port. F or more information, see “Installing to a USB P ort” on page 5.

I NSTALLING TO A P ARALLEL P ORT 13 6. If you unplugged a printer fr om the parallel port earlier , plug it into the “P rinter” port on the scanner . 7. Plug the po wer adapter cable into the jack on the scanner . 8. T urn the scanner over to see the locking tab on the bottom.

C HECKING Y OUR S CANNER 15 T o install the P aperP ort software: 1. S tart Microsoft Windows and make sur e that no other applications are running. 2. Insert the P aperP ort CD into your computer ’ s CD-R OM drive. The CD automatically starts. 3. Click the P aperP ort Software button and follo w the instructions on the screen.
16 V ISIONEER 6200/6400 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE C HECKING A S CANNER C ONNECTED TO A P ARALLEL P ORT When you connect the 6400 scanner to a parallel por t, the scanner icon appears in the Windo ws taskbar (at the bottom right corner of the computer screen).
C HECKING Y OUR S CANNER 17 3. Choose About from the shortcut menu. A dialog box confirms that the scanner is pr operly connected. The About dialog bo x shown belo w is for a 6400 scanner connected to a parallel port. 4. Click OK to close the dialog box.
18 V ISIONEER 6200/6400 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 2. Double-click the Scanners and C ameras icon. The Scanners and Cameras P roperties dialog box appears. The following example sho ws the Visioneer 6400 scanner connected to your computer . If you have a video camera or other scanner connected, those devices may appear in this dialog bo x.
C HECKING Y OUR S CANNER 19 4. Click the T est Scanner or C amera button. A message tells you if the scanner is wor king corr ectly . 5. Click OK to close the dialog box. That’ s it. Y our scanner is ready to scan. S ee “Scanning for the F irst T ime” on page 20.

S CANNING FOR THE F IRST T IME 21 The destination application is the application in which the scanned item appears after the scan has finished. Y ou can change the destination application and will learn ho w later in this guide. T o test your scanner: 1.

S CANNING FROM THE O NE T OUCH S OFTWARE 23 Part 2: Configuring the OneT ouch Software and Scanning Items When you scan with your Visioneer scanner , there are differ ent ways to scan items. Y ou can scan items b y: ■ P ressing the button on the scanner and using the OneT ouch software.
24 V ISIONEER 6200/6400 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE When scanning is complete, the status message also sho ws the destination application. I n the sample belo w , the scanned image is being sent to P aperP ort. During scanning, the scan pr ogress window sho ws a small copy of the image.

S CANNING FROM THE O NE T OUCH S OFTWARE 27 2. Choose Configur e from the shortcut menu. The Configuration dialog box appears. T o display the Configuration dialog box if the scanner is connected to a USB port: 1. In W indows, choose Pr ograms from the S tart menu.
28 V ISIONEER 6200/6400 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Select F ormat and P age(s) —a set of options for selecting a format for the scanned image and whether to scan a single page or multiple pages. The formats are bitmap , JPEG, and P aperP ort. U se P aperP ort for scanning any item.
S CANNING FROM THE O NE T OUCH S OFTWARE 29 ■ Click the H elp button at the top right corner of the Confi guration dialog box S ELECTING A D IFFERENT C ONFIGURATION Y ou can select a new destination application, configuration, and image format for a scanner button to optimiz e it for the type of scanning you want to do.
30 V ISIONEER 6200/6400 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. Click a selection in the S elect Configuration list to choose a new scan configuration. The configurations in the list are pr eset for the application you select in the application list. If y ou select another application, the configurations are for that application.
S CANNING FROM THE O NE T OUCH S OFTWARE 31 T o adjust the scan settings and page settings: 1. Display the Configuration dialog bo x. 2. In the S elect Configuration list, click the configuration that y ou want to adjust. 3. Click the Edit button. The dialog box appears for adjusting the scanning settings of the selected configuration.
32 V ISIONEER 6200/6400 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Resolution —D rag the slider to the right or left to adjust the dots per inch (dpi) of the resolution. The maximum resolution is 600 dpi; the minimum is 50 dpi. The higher the dpi setting, the sharper and clearer the scanned image.
S CANNING FROM THE O NE T OUCH S OFTWARE 33 selected, the scanner makes two passes—the first pass senses the item ’ s size, and the second pass scans the image.
34 V ISIONEER 6200/6400 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Enable har dware compr ession ( JPEG) —Click to make the JP EG compression options activ e. Minimiz e Image S ize (M aximum compr ession) —Select this option to produce the smallest file siz e for the image; image quality is lowest.
S CANNING FROM THE O NE T OUCH S OFTWARE 35 The JPEG compr ession options only apply to: ■ Destination applications used for graphics, photos, and ar twork images. W ord processing applications, fax applications, and other text-based destination applications do not use JP EG compression.

The sample below shows the Visioneer OneT ouch software as the selected target application. If you select mor e than one application, a dialog bo x appears each time you scan asking y ou to select the application.
40 V ISIONEER 6200/6400 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE T o set up the P aperP ort software with the scanner: 1. If the P aperP ort software isn ’ t currently running, double-click the P aperP ort icon on the Windo ws desktop to start it. The P aperP or t Desktop appears.

See the H elp for details. Scan Configuration —U se this section of the dialog box to manually select scan options for the image.
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 43 6. Review the image to make sur e it’ s what you want. R eadjust the settings if necessary . 7. (optional) T o pr eview the image again, click the P review button. 8. When you ’ re satisfied with the image settings, click the Scan button.
44 V ISIONEER 6200/6400 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE A DJUSTING THE B RIGHTNESS AND C ONTRAST Sometimes an item is scanned with the brightness and contrast set to be too light or too dark. F or example, a note written with a light pencil may need to be scanned darker to impr o ve legibility .

46 V ISIONEER 6200/6400 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE A BOUT THE P REDEFINED S CAN S ETTINGS IN P APER P ORT Selecting the pr oper scan setting befor e final scanning pro vides the best results for a scanned item. The scan setting determines the sharpness of the item and the number of possible shades of gray or color .
C LEANING THE S CANNER G LASS 47 4. Drag the Contrast slider to the left to decr ease the contrast or to the right to increase the contrast. See the H elp for more details about the Adv anced Settings dialog bo x. C LEANING THE S CANNER G LASS Scanning items that have ex cessive amounts of dirt or dust may dirty the scanner ’ s glass.
