6 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9120 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Installing Installation is a quick, three-step process: ■ Install the software ■ Connect the scanner ■ Check out your scanner S TEP 1: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE T o install the software: 1.
S TEP 1: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 7 3. On the installation menu, select Install P roducts . The next installation screen appears. 4. Select ScanSoft P aperP ort/Scanner Driver . Installation of the software begins. If a message asks you to restar t your computer , click Restart .
8 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9120 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 6. On the License Agreement window , read the ScanSoft license agreement. If you accept the terms, select I accept the terms in the license agreement , and then click Next .
S TEP 2: C ONNECT THE S CANNER 9 S TEP 2: C ONNECT THE S CANNER Y our OneT ouch 9120 scanner connects to any av ailable USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 por t. Check your computer’ s user guide for por t locations. T o connect the scanner to a USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 por t: 1.
10 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9120 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. Plug one end of the USB cable into an av ailable USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 port on the computer . 4. Plug the other end of the USB cable into the scanner ’ s USB por t. If the plug does not attach easily , make sure that you are plugging it in correctly .
S TEP 2: C ONNECT THE S CANNER 11 The status light on the fr ont of the scanner is illuminated, indicating the scanner is receiving power . Y our computer r ecognizes that a scanner has been plugged into the USB port and automatically loads the appr opriate softwar e from the CD to run the scanner .
12 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9120 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 7. Complete the required information, and then click Register . The registration serial number for y our scanner is located on the underside of the scanner body . 8. On the Install Completed window , click F inish .
S TEP 3: C HECK O UT Y OUR S CANNER 13 T o check the status of the scanner: 1. On the Windo ws taskbar , right-click the scanner icon. The shortcut menu appears. 2. Select About from the shor tcut menu. A dialog box confirms the scanner is pr operly connected.
14 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9120 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE • Is the scanner ’ s locking tab in the locked position? Slide the locking tab to the unlocked position. I f you tried to scan with the scanner locked, you must restar t your computer after unlocking the scanner .
S TEP 3: C HECK O UT Y OUR S CANNER 15 If you tr y all the troubleshooting procedures described above and in the Readme file, and the scanner icon still has a r ed X through it, you may have a malfunctioning scanner . Please see “Visioneer 9120 USB Scanner Specifications ” on page 63.

P RESSING A O NE T OUCH B UTTON ON THE S CANNER 17 2. Close the document cover and press one of the O neT ouch buttons. The scanner star ts scanning the item. Messages just above the Windows taskbar show the status of the scanning process. During scanning, the scan progress window shows a copy of the image, as illustrated here.

S CANNING FROM THE B UTTON P ANEL ON THE S CREEN 19 S CANNING FROM THE B UTTON P ANEL ON THE S CREEN Scanning from the button panel on the scr een works just like pressing a scanner button. The scanner scans the item, and then sends the image to the destination associated with the button.

S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 21 2. On the Windo ws taskbar , click Start , point to Programs , point to ScanSoft P aperP ort 8.0, and then click P aperP ort . The P aperP or t desktop opens. 3. Click the Scan icon on the PaperP ort command bar .
22 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9120 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Y ou can click the AutoScan button to scan with optimum settings for the image, or you can manually pr eview the image and adjust scan settings as required. These two options ar e described below .
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 23 The scanner then uses those settings and the pr eset resolution you selected for the type of image to pr oduce the optimal scanned image. See “Setting Scan Manager P ro Prefer ences ” on page 56 to set the resolution for the type of AutoScan image.

F or example, select Color Confi gurations and then select C ustom to scan a color item with the pr eset Custom scan settings.
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 25 S CANNING 35 MM S LIDES AND N EGATIVES Y our 9120 O neT ouch scanner is specially designed to s can 35mm slides and negatives. Y ou can scan both positiv e and negative film images. A B RIEF E XPLANATION Y our scanner has sensors that captur e the image of the item being scanned.
26 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9120 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 2. T o scan a 35mm slide, first position the 35mm mask on the glass. The mask has one square corner . Align that corner with the arr ow on the scanner body . Make sure that the text on the 35mm mask faces up so the slide fi ts properly in the mask.
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 27 The 35mm negative mask also has a calibration slot. Do not place items to be scanned in the calibration slot. Y ou ’ re now ready to scan the slide or negative. T o scan a 35mm slide or negative: 1. S tart the PaperP or t software and click the Scan icon on the toolbar.

C ONFIGURING THE B UTTONS 33 T o open the Confi guration dialog box from the button panel: 1. Click the scanner icon on the right side of the Windows taskbar . 2. On the button panel, right-click the button y ou want to confi gure. The Configuration dialog bo x opens.

Select the application that y ou want to automatically open to display or pr ocess the scanned image.
C ONFIGURING THE B UTTONS 35 S ELECTING N EW O PTIONS FOR THE B UTTONS Y ou can select a ne w destination application, confi guration, and image format to optimize a scanner button for the type of scanning y ou want to do. U se the Confi guration dialog box to select ne w options.
36 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9120 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE C REATING N EW C ONFIGURATIONS Y ou cannot change settings of the preset (default) confi gurations. If you want to scan with settings other than those in the pr eset confi gurations, create a new configuration.
C ONFIGURING THE B UTTONS 37 6. On the Scan Settings tab, set the scan settings as required. Mode —S elect Black/White to scan in black and white. For example, letters and memos ar e usually scanned in black and white. Select G rayscale to scan items such as documents containing drawings or black and white photographs.
38 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9120 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE the size of the photo. When AutoCrop is selected, the scanner makes two passes—the fi rst to sense the item ’ s size, and the second to scan the image. This option overrides the P age Size selection.
C ONFIGURING THE B UTTONS 39 A DJUSTING S CAN S ETTINGS AND P AGE S ETTINGS When scanning using a confi guration you created yourself, you can adjust scan settings and page settings. For example, if the scanned image is too dark, you can adjust the brightness of the scan setting.

C ONFIGURING THE B UTTONS 41 S ETTING P REFERENCES The preference settings are applied to each button and the scanner. T o set preferences: 1. On the Configuration dialog bo x, select the tab for a button to set its preferences. 2. Click the Pr eferences tab on the Confi guration dialog box.

A DJUSTING THE R ESOLUTION AND S HARPNESS Resolution determines the amount of detail y ou can see in the scanned image.

50 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9120 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE T o adjust the color settings: 1. F rom the Channel drop-down menu, choose the individual color (Red, G reen, or Blue) that you want to use as the basis for adjusting the image, or choose All to adjust them together .
A DJUSTING THE S ETTINGS IN THE S CAN M ANAGER P RO 51 A DJUSTING O UTPUT S IZE The item you ’ re scanning may not fill the scanner glass. In that case y ou can preview the item and use the Auto T rim option to automatically eliminate the unwanted sections of the image.
52 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9120 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 2. If the dotted line is not exactly wher e you want it, put the pointer on the line and drag the mouse. F or example, if y ou want the scan to include a border around the image, you can drag the dotted line to be slightly larger than the autotrimmed area.

A Scan Info box opens for each one. The following figure shows an example of a manually selected ar ea.

N ote that as you rotate the area or maintain its aspect ratio, the width and height measurements change to r eflect the new orientation of the image.
