B EFORE Y OU B EGIN 5 Installation Installation is a quick, four-step process: 1. Assemble the scanner 2. Install the software 3. Connect the power supply 4.
6 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER T o assemble the scanner: 1. Remo ve all shipping tape from the top and bottom of the scanner . 2. Holding t he top with two hands, carefully lower it onto the F latbed so the two hinges slide into their slots.
S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER 7 5. Flip the P a per Guide up to r eveal the two legs folded into the bottom of the tray . 6. S wing out the legs, then low er the P aper Guide T ray so the legs fit into their slots. 7. Flip up the P a per Guide Extension to fully ext end it.
8 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 8. Slide the Scanner Locking T ab to its unlocked position. 9. Plug the ADF cable into the ADF port. Make sur e the ADF cable is securely plugged into the port. Th e ADF will not function properly if the ADF cable is loose or unplugged.
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 9 S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE T o install the softwar e: 1. S tart Microsoft Windo ws and make sure no other applications ar e running . 2. Insert Disc 1 into your computer’ s CD-ROM driv e. The Installation menu automatically opens.

S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 11 5. Click Install N o w . 6. The Select Language windo w opens. Click the drop-do wn menu arrow and s elect the language you want to use. Click OK . 7. The W elcome to the OneT ouch 4.0 Setup Wizar d opens. 8. Click Nex t .
12 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE The next window lists the choices of the drivers that you can install for your scanner . 10. Select the option y ou want. ■ Full I nstall (OneT ouch, TW AIN, and ISIS) —This is the re co m m e nd e d installation.
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 13 ■ TW AIN onl y —The TW AIN driver is installed without the OneT ouch 4.0 software or the ISIS driver . Y ou can use the Visioneer TW AIN driver to scan from TW AIN applications. Y ou will not be able to use the Scan button on the scanner .
14 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE The driver installation will now begin. 13. ST OP when you see the “Complete the installation by connecting your hardware ” window . Do NO T click OK yet. Leave the window open and proceed to “S tep 3: Connect the P ower S upply ” on page 15.
S TEP 3: C ONNECT THE P OWER S UPPLY 15 S TEP 3: C ONNECT THE P OWER S UPPLY Connect the power supply and po wer cor d, and plug the power supply into an electrical outlet. To c o n n e c t y o u r V i s i o n eer P atriot 780 scanner: 1. Plug the pow er supply into the power port on the scanner .
16 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE AND T URN ON THE P OWER The Visioneer P atriot 780 scanner co nnects to any available USB port. Check your computer ’ s manual for USB port locations. 1. Remo ve any protective tape from the USB cable.
S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE AND T URN ON THE P OWER 17 3. T urn on the power switch, located on the back of the scanner to the left of the power port. The status light comes on and flashe s indicating that the scanner is receiving po wer . If you ar e using Windo ws XP Se r vice P ack 2, and have plugged the USB cable into a USB 1.
18 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Y our computer then recognizes that a scanne r has been plugged into the USB port and automatically load s the appropriate software to run the scanner . The scanner ’ s status light is green when the scanner and computer are communicating properly .
S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE AND T URN ON THE P OWER 19 6. Click Close on the I nstallation Complete window to close and exit the software installer . If you selected OmniP age Pr o for installation, a window tells you to insert the second CD to install it.

T o install the additional applications: 1. Return to the I nstallation wi ndow and select the additional applications you want to install on your computer .

The U ser Guides are in A dobe ® Acrob at ® PDF format. The CD also includes a free copy of Acr obat ® Rea de r ® in case your computer does not have it alr eady installed.

S CANNING 25 Scanning S CANNING If you sele cted the recommended F ull Install option for y our scanner’ s driver (see page 12), you have several differ ent options to scan with your Visioneer P atriot 780 scanner . Each method scans equally well, so use the one with appropriate options for the item you are scanning.
26 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CANNING B ASICS Y ou can use your Visioneer P atriot 780 to scan a single page, or stacks of documents using the Automatic Documen t F eeder . L OADING A S TACK OF D OCUMENTS 1. Adjust the paper guide for the width of paper .
S CANNING B ASICS 27 3. Y ou can load the documents into the Automatic Document F eeder in either orientation—that is, with either their long sides or short sides (known as Landscape or P or trait orientation) into the ADF . F or Simplex (one-sided) scans, load the documents face up .

The OneT ouch P roperties window is where you select these three elements for a button.

T o configure the list of available applications, click the Options tab at the top of the dialog bo x and select the desired options.

T o scan in color , select one of the configurations indicated by the small color icon, such as the Color Document configuration. The scan configuration list is preset for the application you select in the Select Destination list.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 43 T EXT D OCUMENTS P ROPERTIES These properties apply to Microsoft W or d, Micr osoft Excel ® , and the other applications indicated by thei r icons in the list. The properties apply to the OCR settings for the applicat ions.
44 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE The Add T ext Based Link dialog box opens. 3. Click Browse to find the application y ou want to add to the list. When you select the application using the B ro wse button, steps 1 and 2 on the dialog box are automatically filled in, and the application icon appears in step 3.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 45 I MAGE D OCUMENTS P ROPERTIES These properties apply to the OmniP age Pr o software that you r eceived with your scanner , plus Microsoft P aint and other image processing applications. 1. Click in the Color document handling settings boxes for the options you want.
46 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 2. T o add another application to the list, click the Add Application button. See the steps on page 43 to add an application to the list. 3. Click OK . 4. Click Refres h on the OneT ouch P roper ties window .

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 49 3. If you need to change your email client, or any other internet options, click the Internet Options button. The Window s Internet Options Control P anel opens. Click the P rograms tab and choose a new email client from the Email list.
50 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S ELECTING P AGE F ORMAT O PTIONS The P age F ormat option that you select determines the file format of the scanned document. Appropriate page format options and file types are available for the type of D estination Application select ed for the button.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 51 The PDF format is often used to cr eate images of text pages. Y ou may want to select PDF as the page format when scanning text pages that do not require OCR processing or othe r processing. The PDF format is also used to put multi-page docume nts on w eb sites as pdf-r eadable files.
52 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T EXT F ORMATS Selecting the text format option also selects OCR processing as an automatic step for scanning. Therefor e, when you scan a document with the text format selected, the text portions of the document are automatically converted to editable text.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 53 T o select a file type for the text for mat: 1. Sele ct the Destina tion Applic ation. 2. Right-cl ick on the tex t format icon. A menu opens. The following figure sho ws samples for differ ent Destination Applications.
54 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Comma Delimited —The .csv file format; used for database or spreadsheet data with fie lds separated by commas. When the document is converted into editable text by the OCR software , the fields are main tained so you can c opy and paste them to a database or spreadsheet application.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 55 R ENAMING A O NE T OUCH B UTTON The OneT ouch buttons have names that identify their pr e-set functions, such as OCR and PDF , bu t you can edit the names. T o change the button names: 1. Open the OneT ouch Pr operties windo w .

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 57 Select Destinations —Select this option to individually choose the types of applications to include in the list of Destination Applications. Check the bo xes for the type of application to include. ■ Document M anagement includes applications for processing and keeping track of yo ur scanned documents.
58 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Cr eate copies of scanned documents —S ometimes the image of a scanned document is only saved as a temporar y file until its Destination Application is finished using it. In those cases you may want an additional, permanent c opy saved on your hard drive.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 63 7. Click the P age Settings tab to select page settings. Siz e —Click St a nd a rd , clic k the menu arrow and choose a page size from the list. The list includes sizes for both portrait and landscape scanning.
64 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE When using the A utoCrop to Original option for a single page on the Flatbed Glass, make sur e to align the top left corner of the item with the arrows at the top left corner of the F latbed Glass.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 65 ■ S traighten Image —Select this option to let the s canner automatically determine if a page is skewed, then straight en its image. The scanner detects page edges and can sense whe n the page is fed through at an angle.

68 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Collate copies —If y ou ’ re printing more than one page, collate the copies. Enter the number of copies in the Copi es box. Advan ced —Click to see additional settings for the device. The dialog that opens is specific to the device.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 71 5. T o help you r emember which folder it is, give the new configuration a name that indicates the folder name, such as “S torage for Business Receipts.” 6. Click the Scan Settings , P a ge Settings , and Advanced S ettings tabs, and select the settings y ou want.
72 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 10. Click OK . The selected folde r will now be set as the St orage Location, such as “Business Receipts.” 11. Click Apply . The new configuration is now listed as a T ransfer to S torage configuration.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 73 14. N ow click the arro w buttons to select a button for each new configuration. Click Apply to set that button for that configuration. The following examples sho w that buttons 7 and 8 have been set to scan to each of the new configurations.
74 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Scan to multiple storage folders: 1. Insert the documents you want to scan to multiple storage folders. 2. Open the OneT ouch P anel and click the arro ws to get to one of the buttons set up for scanning to storage.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 75 E DITING OR D ELETING S CAN C ONFIGURATIONS T o edit or delete a scan confi guration: 1. Open the OneT ouch Pr operties window and make sur e the Scan tab is selected. 2. Select the s can configuration you want to edit or delete.
76 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 4. T o edit the configuration, click the Edit button. The Scan Configuration P roperties dialog box opens for that configuration. Y ou can make changes to a configuration, but for the changes to be saved, the configuration must first be unlocked.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 77 T o configur e befor e scanning: 1. Open the OneT ouch Pr operties windo w . 2. Select the scan configuration Configur e Befor e Scan . 3. Right-click on Configure Befor e Scan and choose an interface to use for configuring before scanning.
78 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CANNING WITH O PTICAL C HARACTER R ECOGNITION (OCR) Optical Character Recognition (OCR) converts text and numbe rs on a scanned page into editab le text and numbers. Y ou can then work with the text and numbers to edit, spellcheck , change font or type size , sort, calculate, and so forth.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 79 3. Click Button 6 (OCR), or if you ’ ve set up one of the other buttons for scanning with a text format, click it instead. Y our scanned pages appear in th e Destination Application with their text ready for edit in g and other text pr ocessing.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 81 The dictionary ico n indicates a language with dictionary support available. The dictionary is consulted to help in the OCR process.
82 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Fo n t M a t c h i n g —Y our computer system usually has a number of fonts available for the OCR process to use to recognize text. Ho wever , not all of the fonts may be selected for the OCR pr ocess.

When bringing in a new image —Click the menu arrow and select where you want new pages added to y our current document. The choices are After last page, After current page, Befor e current page, and Befor e first page.
84 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 780 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Retain inv erted text —Inv erted text is white or pale letters on a black or dark background. Select th is option to retain inverted text, deselect it to have inverted text transformed to normal text of black text on a white background.
