19 Cursor keys The cursor keys, also ca lled the arrow ke ys, le t you move the cursor around the screen. They serve the same function as the arrow keys on the numeric keypad when the Num Lo ck is toggle d off.

21 Function keys The function keys, F1 - F12, let you perform specific functions, depending on the a pplication that uses them. Palm r est The detachable palm rest provides yo u a comfortable pla ce to rest your hands while typ ing.
2 System tour 22 Optical drive Your computer may come with a CD-ROM, DVD-ROM or a combo DVD/ CD-RW, DVD+/-RW, or DVD-R AM(Supermulti plus) drive. This d rive is located on the front panel of your computer. The CD-ROM drive allows you to play different types of comp act discs (CDs).
23 2 When the disc tray slides open, pl ace the CD or DVD gently on the tray . Make sure that the label or title side of the disc is facing upward. When h olding a disc, h old it by the edges to avoid leaving smudges or fingerprints. 3 Push the Eject button again to close the tray .
2 System tour 24 Har d disk Your computer is preins talled with a high-capacity Enhanced-IDE (E-IDE) hard disk. Refer to “Replacing the hard disk ” on page 60 for instructions on how to upgrade or replace your hard disk.

27 Arranging a comfortable work ar ea Working safely begins with the a rrangement of your work space and the proper use of eq uipment. For this reason, it is very im portant to take time and think abou t how you are going to arrange your work area.

29 T o position your PC in a desktop or horizontal position: 1 Attach th e foot stand s as shown in th e figure tha t follows. 2 Place your computer in the desired location.
3 Setting up your computer 30 Positioning your monitor Place your monitor at a comforta ble viewing dist ance, usually 50 to 60 centimeters away. Adjus t the display in suc h a way that the top of the screen is at or slight ly below eye level. Positioning your keyboard The location of th e keyboard is a very important factor to your posture.

3 Setting up your computer 36 Connecting a monitor To connect a monitor, si mply plug the monitor cable into the monitor port (blue port) located on the rear panel of your c omputer. Note: Refer to the monitor manual fo r additonal instructions and information on adjusting your monitors settings.
37 Connecting the power cable Caution! Before you proceed, check the voltag e range in your area. Make sure that it matches your computer’s voltage setting. If they don’t match, set your comput er’ s voltage selector switch to the voltage range applicable to your area.
3 Setting up your computer 38 T ur ning on your computer After connecting the necessary peri pherals and plugging in the power cable, you are now ready to turn the computer on and get to work. To turn on your computer: 1 T urn on all periph erals connecte d to your computer suc h as the monitor , printer , fax, speakers, et c.
39 T ur ning of f your computer To turn off you r computer, fo llow the steps be low. For Windows® XP: 1 On the Windows® XP taskbar , clic k on the Start button, and click T urn Off Computer; then click T urn Off. 2 T urn off all periph erals conne cted to your computer .
3 Setting up your computer 40 Connecting options Connecting your printer Y our computer su pports paral lel, serial and USB printers. T o connect a parallel printer , plug the printe r cable into the parallel port (burgundy port) located on the rear panel of your computer .
41 Connecting the modem (optional) Set up your modem con nection by pluggin g the telephone line and handset line into their corr esponding ports on the rear panel of your comp uter.
3 Setting up your computer 42 Connecting to the network You can connect your co mputer to a Local Area Network (LAN) using a network cable. To do so, simply pl ug the network c able into the network port (white port) on the rear panel of your com puter.
43 Connecting multimedia devices You can connect multimedia devi ces such as microphone, earphone or headphone, external speakers, and au di o line-in device. These devices will allow you to take advantage of your computer’s multimedia features. Note: The multimedia devices shown bel ow are for your reference only .

49 Installation pr ecautions Before you install any computer co mponent, we recommend that you read the following sections. Thes e sections contain important ESD precautions along with preinstallation an d post-installation instructions.

59 3 Press the holding clips on both sides of the DDR DIMM socket outward to release the DDR DIMM (1,2). Gently pull the DDR DIMM out of the socket (3).
4 Upgrading your computer 60 2 Align the DDR DIMM wi th the socket (1). Pr ess the DDR DIMM into the socket until the clips lo ck onto the DDR DI MM (2,3). Note: The DDR DIMM sockets are slotted to ensure proper installation. If you insert a DDR DIMM but it does n ot fit easily into the socket, you may have inserted it incorrectly .
61 3 Lift the drive frame to a 90-degr ee angle; then pull out, and remove the drive frame..
4 Upgrading your computer 62 4 Pull out the drive rail s that hold th e hard disk to the housing. Set the drive rails aside. 5 Slide the hard disk fra me to the le ft (d); then gently move it out (e) and pull it up to det ach it (f).
63 6 Install the new hard disk into the ho using. Se cure it with the dri ve rails you removed earlier and co nnect the power and hard disk cables to the new hard disk. 7 Reinstall the drive fra me into the ho using. 8 Reattach the C D or DVD drive and the flop py drive cables.

71 You can schedule customized virus scans that run unattended on specific dates and times or at period ic intervals. If yo u are using the computer when the schedule d scan begins , it runs in the background so that you do not have to stop working.
5 System utilit ies 72 NTI CD-Maker (for models with CD-RW) The NTI CD-Maker is a CD-Recordi ng software which allows you to create and copy audio, data an d videos to CD-R or CD-RW discs. To copy a n audio or data di sc: 1 Click the Quick Burnin g icon on th e desktop.

75 BIOS utility The BIOS utili ty is a hardware config uration progr am built into your computer's Basic Input/Output Syste m (BIOS). Since most computers are already properl y configured and optimized, there is no need to run this utility.
5 System utilit ies 76 Reinstalling pr ograms If you uninstal l one of the preins talled prog rams and want to reinst all it, do the fol lowing: 1 Make sure that the system is turned on. 2 Insert the System CD into the CD or DVD drive. 3 Select the application that you wa nt to reinstall.
77 Recovering your system I If your operating sy st em files are lost or da maged, the recovery process will rest ore your system's or iginal factor y default settings or last system backup. Your Acer Veri ton s eries computer includes a n OBR(One Button Recovery) butto n, a feature tha t makes restorin g your system quick and easy.
5 System utilit ies 78 You can also follow the steps be low: 1 Locate the OBR button. See the image on page 1 0. 2 Press the butt on. After a moment one of the following screen will appear on yo ur display a when you don’ t backup your system yet.
79 3 In 2-a, click OK. Y ou will be prompt ed again. In 2-b, selec t “Recover to Default Settings” to r estore yo ur system to the default factory settings. Select “Recover data from last backup” to restore your system to the last time system backup.
5 System utilit ies 80 4 If you choo sed your recovery op tion, you sh ould see the following screen. Click OK to continue. 5 After 15 seconds the system will reboot and initiate the restore operation.
81 6 After the recovery operation fini shes the system will reboot. Y ou will be required to go thro u gh the setup pr ocess again. Caution! Running the Recovery operation will erase all file s previously saved in your computer so make sure to back up your important files before starting the recovery process.

In the event that the origina l data on your hard disk is erased or overwritten, or bec omes inaccessi ble because of a hark disk malfunction, you c an use the c opy to restore your lost or damaged data.
83 Disk Defragmenter (W indows XP only) The disk degfragmentation utility consolidates files and folders on your computer’s hard disk. This allo ws your computer to acc ess files and folders and save new data more efficiently.
