9 PO WER T AKE- OFF (PTO) SWITCH Figure 7 The PTO sw itch is located o n the r ight cont rol pane l. It co ntrols the engagem ent of th e cutting blades. (See Fi gure 7) When the sw itc h is: • UP : The cut ting bl ades ar e engaged ( blades are turn ing).
10 DRIVE HANDLES The drive h andles (le ft and right ) are loc ated at th e top of the con trol tower . (See Figu re 8) The dr ive handl es are used to move , steer, and sto p the Z-seri es.

12 SECTION 5: OPERATION BEFORE OPERA TING 1. Study thi s manual careful ly. It has been pr ovided to help you safel y operat e and main tain th is unit. 2. Familiar ize you rself wi th all inst ruments and co ntrols. 3. Fill the fu el tank a ccording to th e MAINTENTANC E sectio n.
13 1. Sit in th e seat of the trac tor faci ng forwar d with your fee t stradd ling the c ontrol to wer. 2. Push the chok e leve r to the fu ll ch oke p osition ( all the way towa rd the front of th e tract or). 3. Push the throttl e lever to the fast (rabbit) posi tion (all the way toward the f ront of the tractor).
14 QUICK REFERENCE CHART The Z-series c an turn with a zero radi us. The Z-ser ies uses the r ear tires to tur n. When turni ng with a zero radi us, the rear tire s are used as the piv ot point. A con ventiona l tractor can ma ke a circle bu t it needs a turni ng radius, usuall y based on the distance betwe en the front and rear whe els.
15 MO WING For best res ults, cons ider the follo wing rec ommendati ons: • Mow the first two laps with the discha rge po intin g towar d the c enter. • Mow the next two laps with th e dischar ge pointing outs ide (away from ce nter) for a balanc ed cut and improved app earan ce.

19 16. Rem ove quarter inch by seven i nch pins from top and bo ttom holes . 17. Se t parkin g brake and st art the eng ine ( set th rottle at f ull s peed). M ake sur e that th e PTO is off. 18. Rota te rods (l engthen or shorte n) to bring each h ydrosta t to neu tral.

21 SECTION 8: MAINTENANCE ENGINE COMP ARTMENT The engine is loca ted behind the ope rator seat. FUEL T ANK The fuel tank f iller ca p is located on the left-rea r fender pane l. Take the fuel cap off by uns crewin g. Fill the gas tank from this po int.

23 REPLA CIN G THE HEAD LAMP B ULB 1. Remove the ignitio n key fr om igniti on switc h. 2. Detach the bottom of th e rubber boot cover on the driv e handles. 3. Slide th e boot c over all the way up (towar d the d rive handl es) to ac cess the d rive ha ndle b olts.
24 Warning: Wh en rem oving the cab les from t he batter y follo w order of t he steps to avoid a shor t between the wrenc h and the fr ame. REMO VING THE BA TTER Y 1. Remove the negati ve (black) cabl e. 2. R emove t he posit ive (re d) cabl e. 3. Unscrew the two wing nuts from the battery rods.

Remove the be lt from clutch bel ow the engine in the rear of the unit . 6. Push the deck as sembly for ward to disco nnect the retain ing arms from t he deck.

Turn the th readed li nk the ap propri ate distan ce dow n. • Every 1/2 turn =1/ 32” (.03 125”) • Exampl e: If the front measureme nt is 4.625” the thr eaded link shou ld be turne d 2 full turns (1/8” or 0.125”) down. 3. Reconnec t the ha nger lin ks to the hanger br ackets an d the r etaining arms to the tra ctor.

31 2. Use a 1- 1/8 inch soc ket wren ch on the pulley side of the sp indle to secure. 3. Tighten the nut to 100 ft-lbs (136 Nm) . LUBRICA TION OF MO WER DECK Lubricate t he m ower dec k and its part s as re quired. • Each sp indle has a gr ease f itting and all p ivot poin ts sh ould b e lubrica ted wi th moto r oil.
