Basic Installation Procedures 975-0468-01-01 1–5 This guide for use by qualified installers only Basic Installation Procedures Xantrex recommends that you h ave your installation performed by a qualified technician or electrician. This section provides sample installa tion information as a guide for your installation.
1–6 975-0468-01-01 This guide for use by qualified installers only Step 1: Designing the Installation Most Freedom HW installations share common components, and some of these are briefly described below . Figure 1-2 shows some components and their relationshi p to each oth er in a typical recreational vehicle or fleet vehicle installation.
Basic Installation Procedures 975-0468-01-01 1–7 This guide for use by qualified installers only AC shore power A source of 120 V , 60Hz sine wave alternating current is needed to provide energy to char ge batteries and pass power through to AC loads.
1–8 975-0468-01-01 This guide for use by qualified installers only AC Output: The circuit breaker or fuse must be rated at no more than the rating of the input breaker in the installation and must be approved for use on 120 V ac branch circuits.
Basic Installation Procedures 975-0468-01-01 1–9 This guide for use by qualified installers only AC breakers and fuses must be sized to adequately protect the w iring that is installed on the input and output AC circuits of the Freedom HW.
1–10 975-0468-01-01 This guide for use by qualified installers only DC Disconnects and Over- Current Devices The DC circuit from the battery to the Freedom HW must be equipped with a disconnect and over -current de vice. This usually consists of a circuit breaker , a “fused-disconnect,” or a separate fuse and DC disconnect.
Basic Installation Procedures 975-0468-01-01 1–11 This guide for use by qualified installers only Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) A GFCI is a device that de-energizes a circuit when a current to ground exceeds a specified value that is less th an that required to blow the circuit breaker .
1–12 975-0468-01-01 This guide for use by qualified installers only Step 2: Choosing a Location for the Freedom HW The Freedom HW should only be inst alled in locations that meet the following requirements: ❐ Dry . Do not allow water or other flui ds to drip or splash on the Freedom HW.
Basic Installation Procedures 975-0468-01-01 1–13 This guide for use by qualified installers only Step 3: Mounting the Freedom HW T o mount the Freedom HW: 1. Remove the Freedom HW fro m its shipping container , verify that all components are present, and record relevant product information on Freedom HF Inverter/Charger Ow ner ’ s Guide (Doc.
1–14 975-0468-01-01 This guide for use by qualified installers only Connecting the Equipment Ground The Freedom HW has a ground stud on the side of the u nit as shown in Figure 1-4. Follow the guidelines in “Grounding Locatio ns” to co nnect the inverter ’ s chassis to the ground.
Basic Installation Procedures 975-0468-01-01 1–15 This guide for use by qualified installers only Step 4: Connecting the A C Input W ires General A C W iring Considerations AC cable size The AC input cable may be either solid or stranded (as required), but must have three conductors and be sized as in T able 1-4 on page 1–16 .
1–16 975-0468-01-01 This guide for use by qualified installers only There are two knockouts on th e front panel for AC input and output wiring. When making the AC input and AC output connections, observe the correct color code for the appropriate AC wire, as described in T able 1-5.
Basic Installation Procedures 975-0468-01-01 1–17 This guide for use by qualified installers only 6. Strip about 2 inches (50 mm) from th e jacket of the AC input cable. The AC input cable may be either so lid or stranded (as required), but must have three conductors and be sized as in T able 1-4 on page 1– 16 .
1–18 975-0468-01-01 This guide for use by qualified installers only Step 5: Connecting A C Output to an Existing A C Circuit Do not connect the Fr eedom HW to an AC branch circuit that has high-power consumption loads.
Basic Installation Procedures 975-0468-01-01 1–19 This guide for use by qualified installers only T o make a permanent connection to existing AC wiring (continuing from # 13 of “S tep 4: Connecting the AC Input Wires” on page 1–15): 1. Ensure that AC and DC power are both OFF .
1–20 975-0468-01-01 This guide for use by qualified installers only 1 1. Insert the Line and Neutral wires into the corresponding terminals. 12. T ighten the wire attachment screws to a torqu e of 1 5.6 –2 1.6 in-lbf (1.76–2.44 N-m). Leave som e wi ring slack inside the wiring compartment.
Basic Installation Procedures 975-0468-01-01 1–21 This guide for use by qualified installers only In this wiring diagram, the AC in put to the Freedom HW comes from the main AC panel which contains the in put circuit breaker . The AC output wiring is routed to a separate invert er subpanel with a dedicated circuit breaker .
1–22 975-0468-01-01 This guide for use by qualified installers only In this wiring diagram, the AC inpu t to the Freedom HW comes directly from an AC source. Th e AC source input wiri ng must be protected by an AC breaker of 30 A max. Th e output wiring is routed t o the main AC panel which is also pro tected by AC breakers or circuit breakers.
Basic Installation Procedures 975-0468-01-01 1–23 This guide for use by qualified installers only Step 6: Connecting the DC Cables Follow the procedure given below to connect the battery leads to the terminals on the DC end.
1–24 975-0468-01-01 This guide for use by qualified installers only T o make the DC connections Refer to Figure 1-9. 1. Make sure the inverter is off and no AC or DC is connected to the unit. 2. Remove the nuts and washers from the Freedom HW positive and negative DC termina ls .
Basic Installation Procedures 975-0468-01-01 1–25 This guide for use by qualified installers only 10. Install the lock washer and nut that are supplied with the inverter .
1–26 975-0468-01-01 This guide for use by qualified installers only 13. Install the lock washer and nut that are supplied. T ighten the nut to a torque of 108–120 in-lbf (12. 2–13.6 N-m). Make the connection snug enough so the ring terminal do es not move around on the DC terminal, but do not overtighten.
Basic Installation Procedures 975-0468-01-01 1–27 This guide for use by qualified installers only Step 7: Mounting the Display P anel Xantrex has three communications ca bles of dif ferent lengths available for purchase. Choose a 25-foot cable (p/n: 31 -6257-00), 50-foot cabl e (p/n: 31-6262-00), or a 70-fo ot cable (p/n: 31-6275-00).
1–28 975-0468-01-01 This guide for use by qualified installers only Step 8: T esting Y our Installation There are two tests to be performed. The first test verifies that the Freedom HW is inverting DC battery power and delivering AC power to its output.
Basic Installation Procedures 975-0468-01-01 1–29 This guide for use by qualified installers only T esting in Shore P ower Mode T o test the Freedom HW in shor e power mode: ◆ W ith the appliance from the prev ious test still connected and operating, connect the shore power source.
