Carefully remove the protective fo am from the ADF cover release, then press the release and open the Automatic Document Feeder cover .

It installs the One T ouch 4.0 software which provides the necessa ry driver software for the scanner . It also inst alls scanning interfaces for the TW AIN and ISIS drivers.
Installation 12 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide 4. Click Next . During inst allation you will see this window asking you to select one of the images for your Color S pace setting. The Color S pace set ting se ts the gamma value for the scanner so scanned items look good on your monitor .

Installation 14 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide S tep 4: Connect the USB Cable and T urn on the Power The DocuMate 272 scanner con nects to any availa ble USB port. Check your computer ’s manual for USB port location s. 1. Remove any protective t ape from the USB cable.

The status lig ht comes on and flashes indicating that the scanner is receiving power . If you are using Windows XP and have plugged the USB cab le into a USB 1.

Scanning 22 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide Scanning If you selected the recommended Full Insta ll option (see p age 1 1), then you have several dif ferent options to scan with your Xerox DocuMate 272 scanner . Each method scans equally well, so use the one with appropriate options f or the item you are scanning.
DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Gui de 23 Scanning Load and Scan Document s When you press either the Simplex or Duplex button, documents are scanned using the scan setting s indicated by the LED number . The scanned images are the n sent to a software ap plication (known as the Destination Application) on your computer .
Scanning 24 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide 3. Check the LED number to make sure you’re using the scan setting you want. T o choose a new scan setting, press the Destination Selector buttons. 4. T o scan a one-sided document, press the Simplex button.

T o check the scan settings before scanning, press, hold down, and then release, either the Simplex or Duplex button . The One T ouch Properties window opens for you to view and change the settings before scanning.

Scanning 30 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide Scanning Identification Cards and Credit Cards Y our Xerox DocuMate 272 scanner has a specially designed card feeder for scanning plastic identification cards, insurance ca rds and credit cards. The steps below exp lain how to scan using the One T ouch scanner buttons or One T ouch button panel.
DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Gui de 31 Scanning 3. When scanning is finished, the image of the card is automatically rotated so it is easily readable. In this example, the Destination Ap plication is Microsoft Paint, so the card image appears in the Paint win dow .
Scanning 32 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide Configuring the One T ouch Buttons Each One T ouch button configuration consist s of a Destination Application , a Scan Configuration , and a Document Format . The One T ouch Properties window is where you select t hese three elements for a button.

Click OK or Apply on the One T ouch Properties window . When PaperPort opens af ter you finish scanning, the thumbnails of your scanned document s are on the Desktop in that folder .

BMP and TIFF are standard image file formats generally used if you want to do additional image processing, such as photo touch-up or co lor correction.

This format conve rts scanned text into PDF with text search and OCR cap abilities. It is only available if you have One T ouc h OmniPage or the OmniPage Pro software inst alled on your computer .
Scanning 48 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide Selecting Options for a Button The One T ouch Options determine the types of Destination Applications available for a button, as well as the location of the files of your scanned items. T o select options: 1.
DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Gui de 49 Scanning • T ext Editors include Microsoft W ord and W ordPad, Microsoft Excel, and other word processing and spreadsheet applications. Select this option if you want OCR processing to convert your scanned document s to text that you can edit.

DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Gui de 51 Scanning Creating a New Scan Configuration The scan configurations are where you select the scanning resolution, brightness, mode (color , black&white, or grayscale), and a number of other settings. Note the lock icon on th e preset configurations.
Scanning 52 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide 5. Select scan settings for the new scan configuration. Mode —Select a scanning mode: • Black&White to scan in black and white. For example, letters and memos are usua lly scanned in black and white.
DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Gui de 53 Scanning Drag the sliders to the right or lef t to adjust the brightness and contrast of the scanned image. The Contrast setting does not apply to the Black&White mode. 6. If you want to lock the config uration, click the key icon to change it from a key to a lock.
Scanning 54 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide • Straighte n Image —Select this option to let the scanner automatically determine if a p age is skewed, then straighten its ima ge. The scanner detects page edges and can sense when the p age is fed through at an a ngle.

For example, if you are scanning a lett er with a red watermark, you can choose to filter out the re d so the scanned letter just shows the text and not the red watermark.
Scanning 56 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide The Device Settings T ab A Device Settings t ab appears on the Scan Co nfigurations dialog box when your selected Destination Application sends the scanned image to a printer , fax application, or other device.

Click on the button you set to use the Configure Before Scan option. In the example shown on the previous p age, the scanning option 9 has been set to use Configure Before Scan.

Scanning 66 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide Scanning with Optical Ch aracter Recognition (OCR) Optical Character Recognitio n (OCR) is like a printer in reverse. Instead of printing what’ s on the screen onto p aper , OCR converts text and numbers on a scanned p age into edit able text and numbers.
DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Gui de 67 Scanning T o scan with OCR: 1. T o scan using the buttons on the scanner , pre ss the Destination Selector until the LED is at 6, then press the Simplex or Duplex button.
Scanning 68 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide Scanning with sPDF or nPDF and Searching for T ext Searchable PDF (sPDF) and Normal PDF (nPDF) are special forms of an Adobe PDF file. sPDF converts scanned text into the PDF format with text search and OCR capabilities.

Scanning 70 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide Scan and Burn to a CD If you have a CD burner att ached to your computer , you can scan directly from your Xerox DocuMate 272 scanner onto a CD. This feature is available only on computers running Windows XP or Windows V ista.

Scanning 72 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide Scanning with Event Forwarding If you want to specify an applicati on to use for scanning at the st art of the process, you can use ev ent forwarding. The scann er will feed in the first p age, but will then stop until you select the application to use.

Scanning 74 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide Creating an HTML Web Page from Y our Scanned Document s If you scan a document, whether a single p age or multiple pages, you can have the pa ges converted directly to HTML formatted pages for posting directly to your web site.

Y ou may also want to write down the address shown in the Address bar to make sure you ’ll know where to find your new HTML page later on.

The process is ideal for archiving document s without having to manually save or process them in any other way .

DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Gui de 79 Scanning Checking the Hardware and Se tting the Lamp Power Saving 1. Right-click on the One T ouch icon and choose Show Hardware from the pop-up menu. Y ou can also click the scanner icon at the top of the One T ouch Button Panel.
Scanning 80 DocuMate 272 Scanner User’s Guide 2. Click the Properties button. Y our scanner has a built-in power saving feature that is set to power down after 15 minutes of idle time. Y ou can change the time before the scanner powers down, from 1 minute to a maximum of 10 hours.

The options on the TW AIN interface are: • Mode —Select a scanning mode: Black&White to scan in black and white.

For example, a note written with a light pencil may need to be scanned darker to im prove legibility .

Set the resolution to 200 or 300 d pi to ensure good image quality . 3. Choose AutoCrop to original to scan the proper size for the card.
