User Guide 7 Loading Trays Loading inst ructions are al so locate d on the labels inside the tray. Caution Do not remove a tr ay while prin ting; this may cause paper jams. User Guide 11 3. To load paper in the tray , place the paper against the left edge of the tray , then slide the width guid e against the pape r. ■ Load lette rhead fac e up with the top of the pag e entering the printer f irst . ■ Don't load pap er above the fill line.
12 Phaser 3400 Person al Laser Printer Installing Software Before sendi ng a job to the printer, you must have the printe r driver or PostScript PPD fil e installed on your comput er. Using the Windows installer Use the install er applicat ion to automati cally i nstall the print er driver and utility sof tware onto your computer's ha rd disk.
User Guide 13 Using the Macintosh install er Use the instal ler appli cation to auto matically install the PostS cript PPD onto your computer's hard disk. 1. Insert the Pha ser 3400 printer 's CD-ROM into your co mputer's CD-R OM dr iv e.

User Guide 17 ■ If using Windows, acc ess the printer drive r (as described on page 25) and c heck the setti ngs. ■ Make sure that the print job is be ing sent to the corre ct port (for example, LPT1 ). For Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me, check the settin gs on the Deta ils tab.
18 Phaser 3400 Person al Laser Printer Paper Jams Jam prevention tips ■ Only use paper suppor ted by the printe r; see page 6. ■ Make sure that the paper is lo aded correct ly. ■ Don't add paper above the tray's fill lin e. ■ If paper is sti ll jamming, flip the pape r over in the paper tra y.
User Guide 19 2. If there is r esistance when y ou pull the paper or the paper is not visible, open th e rea r cover. 3. Detach the vinyl strip. 4. Press the re ar cove r down until t he plastic c lips of the rea r tray snap out. 5. Gently pull th e paper to remo ve it; if successf ul, skip to Step 9.
20 Phaser 3400 Person al Laser Printer 6. If there is sti ll resistance when you pull the paper , pinch the tabs to release the exit roller , then swing th e roller to th e left. 7. Gently remove the jammed paper. Note If you still can not remove the paper , refer to "Cle aring paper jams inside th e printer" (th e following se ction).
User Guide 21 Clearing jams inside the printer 1. Open the t op cover and remov e the laser pri nt cart ridge. Caution Do not expose the la ser print cartridg e to heat or direct sunlight. 2. Careful ly lift up the met al guide. 3. Gently remove the jammed pa per.
22 Phaser 3400 Person al Laser Printer 5. Replace t he laser print cartridge and cl ose the top cov er. Clearing jams in the tray area 1. Pull out the pa per tray. 2. Gently pull th e jammed paper to remove it. 3. Push the stack of paper down until the bottom pla te of the tray locks into pl ace.
