Mak e sure the printer is shielded f rom the direct air flow of heaters, air c onditioners, or humidif iers. Loc ate the printer away from elec trical equipm ent, suc h as a radio or television.

Setting Up • 13 2-1-1 Installing the Laser Printer cartridge 1 Check that t he power switch is off. 2 Push the release butt on t o fully open the t op cover.
14 • Chapter 2 3 Unpack the new Laser Print er car t ridge. Drum shutter Save the Laser Printer cartridge package (aluminized bag) in case y ou need to store the cartridge after removing it, for ex ample, when moving the printer. • Never open the drum shutter to avoid damage to the photosensitive drum.
Setting Up • 15 5 W it h one hand, hold t he cartridg e down on a flat surf ace. W ith the other, g rasp the end t ab of the yellow sealing tape and slowly pull it out. End tab • The tab may break if you pull up instead of straight out. • Make sure the top of the cartridge is oriented as show n above to prevent damage to the cartridge drum.

Setting Up • 17 2-2 Installing Printer Software To s end print jobs f rom your PC or workstation to your printer, you have to install the right printer driver on your sy stem . Look for the r elevant section below for instruc tions on the installation of the Printer Dr iver.
18 • Chapter 2 2 In the File Manager window , select t he dr ive in which you have inserted your disk et t e. Then double click on SETUP.EXE to run the setup prog ram. 3 This bring s you to the setup prog ram. A dialog box as shown below appears. Click Next .

Double click the Pr inter s f older . Double click the Add Printer icon. The Add P rinter Wizard will guide you through t he inst allat ion procedures.

Fr om there, select CD- ROM Dr i ve , f ollowed by DOCP RNT WIN9 5XCP 12.INF to start installing. ( ex. d: win95disk1 xcp12.Inf) During installation, you may have to copy files to your hard disk.

28 • Chapter 2 2-3 Testing the Printer 2-3-1 Switching on the pr inter Press the power switch to the [I] position to turn on the printer. W hen the Online LED is on, the printer is ready to print.
Setting Up • 29 A settings page will be printed onto the paper of any size that is loaded in the 250-sheet cassette. If no paper is loaded in the 250- sheet cassette, a No Paper status will appear on the control panel and the status monitor.

36 • Chapter 3 3-2 Loading Print Media The f ollowing table is a guide to the ty pes of paper size supported by each feeder or tray. Y ou may want to study it before you load paper into the various trays.
Print Media • 37 3-2-1 Using the paper cassettes This section gives y ou step by step instructions on how to load y our print media into the 250- sheet paper cas sette and the 500-sheet paper cassette ( optional). The 250-s heet paper cas sette can hold about 250 sheets of plain paper weighing 60g/m 2 (16lb) and 105g/m 2 (28lb) each.

Print Media • 41 5 Insert a st ack of paper s along the lef t side of t he cassette. Make sure the stack goes under t he metal ret aining clip and the plastic tabs on the end g uides. Paper overloading m ay cause paper jams. 6 Slide the side guide t o t he lef t so t hat it slig htly touches the edge of the paper stack .

Print Media • 43 3-2-2 Using the Envelope cassette (optional) The envelope c assette can hold envelopes with a weight betw een 16 and 50lb/ 60 and 190g/m 2 . 1 Reach into the pock et on the handle of the cassette and pull t he cassette straight out.
44 • Chapter 3 3 Pinch the side guide and slide it t o the f ar rig ht . 4 W h ile lif ting the end g uide slig htly, slide it t o the desired envelope length. T hen lower the guide unt il it lock s into place. Use the notches at the bottom of the cassette to set the paper length.

Make sure the stack is under the roller and t he plast ic tabs on the end g uides. Envelope overloading may cause paper jam s. 6 Slide the side guide t o t he lef t so t hat it slig htly touches the edge of the envelope stake.

Print Media • 47 3-2-3 Using the Multi-sheet Bypass Feeder Use the m ulti-sheet bypass feeder (MBF) to print tr ansparencies , labels, envelopes or postc ards in addition to m ak ing quick runs of paper types or sizes that are not curr ently loaded in the paper cas sette.

50 • Chapter 3 For Envelopes: • Feed the envelopes w ith the flap-side facing down and short edge leading first into the MBF. T he long edge where the flap is should rest against the left side of the tray. If the envelope flaps are on the short edge, place the envelopes so that the closed flap’s folds are fed in first.

W hen Xerox DocuPrint P12 enters this status , all LEDs turn on for approxim ately 1 second then blink f or 3 sec onds.

64 • Chapter 5 5-1 The Printer Driver Xerox DocuPrint P12 printer driver is of fered f or W indows 3.1x and W indows 95. There ar e several ways to access the Pr inter Driver: • In W indows 95, in the Printers folder , highlight the printer that you want and select Properties from the File menu.
DocuPrint P12 Pr inter Driver • 65 5-2 Setup tab ◆ Copies Sets the num ber of c opies to be printed. T he valid value ranges from 1 to 99 and the default is 1 . ◆ Resolution Sets the resolution f or your print jobs. T he choices are 150 dpi (draft), 300 dpi (faster output), or 600 dpi (best quality).
66 • Chapter 5 Select a waterm ark to be used in the printout, either f rom the Text or Graphics groups, or one from eac h. The preview area on the right will show y ou how the currently highlighted w atermark look like. To delete or c hange the settings of a curr ently highlighted watermar k, c lick on the Delete or Edit button res pectively.

68 • Chapter 5 ◆ Tex t Displays the watermark text. You can create a new waterm ark or change the present tex t by entering text not ex ceeding 128 character s in these dialogs. T he def ault for Add Text Wat ermark dialog is T ext . ◆ Font Allows y ou to specif y the font to be used for the waterm ark text.

70 • Chapter 5 Dark ness Determ ines the density at which y ou want the w aterm ark to appear on the printout. Move the slide lef t or right to adjus t the density level. Scale Specify the scale for the bitm ap to be placed on the printout. • Ac tual Size This option places the bitm ap on the page at 100%.
DocuPrint P12 Pr inter Driver • 71 5-2-3 2-Sided Printing dialog 1-Sided Prints the sent data on one s ide of the paper. 2-Sided Book (binding on the long edge) This option prints data on both sides of the paper and gives allowance for binding on the longer edge of your printout.

74 • Chapter 5 Normal Prints a docum ent in its norm al size. This is also the default setting. Reduce for N-up printing Prints m ultiple pages, in r educed size, on a single sheet of paper . This enables you to scan multiple pages at a glance and save paper on drafts .

Using Different paper source for first page cannot be combined with 2-sided printing, Booklet and Poster printing. In instances whereby you have not installed these optional cassettes, but you have specified in the Accessories tab to add these options, they w ill appear.
80 • Chapter 5 5-4 Destination tab Output settings Allows y ou to choose to s end a print job to the printer or to a file. If Print to file is selected, a Print to File dialog will be displayed during printing. T his dialog is a s tandard W indows dialog.

82 • Chapter 5 W hen y ou are m anually selecting the imaging m ode, the gr aphics to the right of the m odes will change ac cording to your selection. Halftone Featur es Halftoning utilizes m inute gray dots to represent a light or dark image ar ea.

84 • Chapter 5 5-7 Advanced tab Printer M emory This feature ens ures that all docum ents will be printed, even for com plex or m em ory-intensive pages (though at a lower res olution).
DocuPrint P12 Pr inter Driver • 85 5-7-1 Printer Admi nistrati on dialog All settings in this window cannot be resolved to defaults by clicking the Resolve Defaults button in the Setup tab. Auto-continue This option tells your printer to autom atically resume pr inting 15 seconds af ter an auto-c ontinual error oc curs.
86 • Chapter 5 W ait time-out Valid values ranges f rom 5 to 300 seconds or off . The def ault is 200 seconds. This setting determ ines the length of tim e the printer will wait for data. W hile waiting, the printer will preserve any partially -rec eived job, and no new job will be accepted on the other input por ts.

90 • Chapter 6 6-1 The Status Monitor In many way s , the Status Monitor acts as a rem ote contr ol panel for the printer. It provides many of the printer f unctions tr aditionally associated with the printer’s physical control panel. Below is a desc ription of s ome of its f unctions.
DocuPrint P12 Status Monitor • 91 6-2 Views of Status Monitor The Status Monitor exists in four dif ferent f orm s, a m inim ized window , an icon (W indows 3.1x only), a Tas kbar button ( W indows 95 only ) and a max imized window. 6-2-1 Mini-window vi ew ◆ Control m enu button The c ontrol m enu pops up at a click of this button.
92 • Chapter 6 Icon Note Ready A steady green light means that the pr inter is ready to receive print j ob. If Icon f lashes to alert is on, the green light will flash indicating that the printer is printing.
DocuPrint P12 Status Monitor • 93 ◆ Maxim ize button The Max W indow wi th the General tab ac tive pops up at a click on this button. ◆ Text area This area provides ex planation to the current pr inter status. Double-click ing this ar ea also brings up the Max W indow of the Status Monitor with the Genera l tab active.
94 • Chapter 6 6-2-3 Taskbar view (Windows 95 onl y) The tas kbar view of the Status Monitor provides a com pact representation of the curr ent printer status in the user’s W indows 95 task bar. The tex t on this task bar button is a concise s umm ar y of the present printer status.
DocuPrint P12 Status Monitor • 95 6-3 General tab The tex t display area shows the name of the current def ault printer. Below this printer nam e, up to five lines of status text are dis play ed depending on the printer’s s tate and other variables.
96 • Chapter 6 ◆ Printer Info button Click ing this button brings up the Printer Info dialog ( as displayed below). The am ount of printer inf orm ation shown will vary depending on whether the printer has bi- directional com m unication enabled. If a non-Pr intGear printer is the default printer , this button will disappear.
DocuPrint P12 Status Monitor • 97 6-4 Change Printer tab The Change printer tab provides a quick and easy way to c hange the W indows default printer. ◆ Current Default The nam e of the current W indows def ault printer is s hown at the top of the tab.
98 • Chapter 6 6-5 Alerts tab In this tab, you can control how the Status Monitor will alert you to changes in printer and job status . ◆ Alert Me W hen... You can select when y ou want the Status Monitor to alert you. The options are M y job starts to print , My job is printing , My job is finished and T here is a problem printing .
