GETTING STARTE D 4 Notes on batteries • Change all of the batteries if you notice conditions such as th e operation range of the remote control decreases, the indicato r does not flash, or its light or display window become dim. • Do not use old batteries together with new ones.

SPEAKER SE TUP 13 PREP ARA TION + The speaker layout below s hows the standard ITU-R * speaker setting. Y ou can use it to enjoy CINEMA DSP, multi-channel audio sources and THX. * ITU-R is the radio communication sector of the ITU (International T eleco mmunication Union).
14 SPEAKER SETUP ■ Di-pole speake r lay out Either di-pole or direct radiat ing speaker types can be used for THX surround. If you choose di-pole speakers, please place the surround and surrou nd back speakers accor ding to the speaker layout below .
15 SPEAKER SE TUP PREP ARA TION Be sure to connect the left ch annel (L), right channel (R), “+” (red) and “–” (black) properly . If the connections are faulty , no sound will be heard from the speakers, and if the polarity of the speaker conne ctions is incorrect, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.

22 CONNECTIONS ■ Connections f or audio components ■ Connecting a turntab le PHONO jacks are for connecting a turntable with an MM or high-output MC cartridge. If you have a turntable with a low-output MC cartridge, use an in-line boosting transformer or MC-hea d amplifier when connecting to these jacks.

24 CONNECTIONS Both AM and FM indoor antennas are included with this unit. In general, these ante nnas should pr ovide sufficient signal strength. Connect ea ch antenna correctly to the designated terminals. ■ Connecting the AM loop ant enna 1 Set up the AM loop antenna.
25 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION ■ Connecting the A C power cab le Plug the power cable into the AC inlet after al l other connections are compl ete, then plug the power cable to an AC wall outlet. Do not use other AC power cables. Use the provided cable.
26 CONNECTIONS Follow the procedure below to cha nge the impedance setting for all speakers. If you are using 6 ohm speake rs, set the impedance to 6 ohms before using this unit. AUTO SETUP 27 PREP ARA TION This receiver employs Y AMAHA Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer (YP AO) technology which lets you avoid troublesome listeni ng-based speaker setup and achieves highly accurate s ound adjustments.
28 AUTO SETUP For best results, make sure the room is as quiet as possible during the auto setup procedure (YP AO). If there is too much ambient noise, the resu lts may not be satisfactory .
29 AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION For Equalizing, press k / n to select: Skip T o skip the selected item and perform no adjustments. Check: Natura l T o average out th e frequency response of all speakers with higher frequencies being less emphasized. Recommended if the “Flat” setting sounds a little harsh.
30 AUTO SETUP Y ou can confirm the resu lts of each analysis. If y ou set Setup T ype to “A uto” The results are displayed afte r all items have been analyzed. •P r e s s n and select Setup to set the measured values. •P r e s s k and select Retry to retry the auto setup procedure.

34 PLAYBACK 7 Select a sou nd field program if desired. Use PROGRAM (or press one of the sound field program buttons repeatedly ) to select a sound field program. See page 48 for de tails about sound field programs. When this unit detects Dolby Digital signals, the following display appears for a few seconds.

37 PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION • Some 6.1-channel compatible discs do not have a signal (flag) which this unit can automatically detect. When playing these kinds of discs with 6.1-channel, select decoders (PL xMovie, PL xMusic, EX/ES or EX) manually .
38 PLAYBACK ■ Listening to high fidelity ster eo sound (PURE DIRECT) PURE DIRECT bypasses this unit’ s decoders and DSP processors as well as shut s down the video circuitry , allowing you to enjoy the hi ghest possible so und fidelity from analog and PCM sources.
39 PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION ■ Downmixing to 2 c hannels Y ou can enjoy 2-channel stereo playback from multi- channel sources. Rotate PROGRAM (or set AMP/SOURCE/TV to AMP, then press STEREO on the remote control) to select 2ch Stereo. Y ou can use a su bwoofer with this program when SWFR or BOTH is selected in LFE/BASS OUT.
40 PLAYBACK This unit comes with a variet y of input jacks. Y ou can select the type of input signa l you want to use as follows. Press A UDIO SELECT to select an input mode. In most cases, use AUTO. AUTO Automatically selects input signals in the following order: 1) i.
TUNING 41 BAS I C OPERA TION There are 2 tuning methods : automatic and manual. Automatic tuning is effe ctive when station signals are strong and there is no in terference. ■ A utomatic tuning 1 Rotate the INPUT selector to select TUNER as the input source.
42 TUNING ■ A utomaticall y preset ting FM stations Y ou can use the automa tic pres et tuning feature to store FM stations. This function enables this un it to automatically tu ne into FM stations wit h strong signals, and to store up to 40 (8 stations in 5 groups, A1 through E8) of those stations in orde r .

45 TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION HD Radio is a new technology that enables AM and FM radio stations to broadcast programs digitally . Digital broadcasting provide s list eners with radically improved audio quality and rece ption as well as new data services.
46 TUNING Use this feat ure to select one of the 8 HD Radio audio programs (HD1 to HD8) when the unit is i n the tuner mode. Each audio program contains data programs. Press PRG SELECT on the remote control repeatedly to toggle betwe en HD Radio audio programs.
RECORDING 47 BAS I C OPERA TION Y ou can use the REC OUT/ZONE 2 control to record one source while watching and/or listening to a nother source. Recording adjustments a nd other operations are performed from the recording components. Refer to the operation instructions for those components.
SOUND FIELD PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS 48 This unit is equipped with a variety of precise digital decoders that allow you to enjoy multi-channel playback from almost any sound source (stereo or mult i-channel).

50 SOUND FIELD PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS Y ou can select from the following sound fields when playin g music sources, lik e CD, FM/AM broadcas ting, tapes, etc. Prog ram selection methods v ary depending on sound field pr ogram types. For details on ho w to select sound field programs, see “Selecting sound fi eld programs” on pages 34 and 35.
ADVANCED OPERATIONS 51 AD V ANCED OPERA TION Use this feature to automa tically set this unit in the standby mode after a certain amount of time. The sleep timer is useful when you are going to sleep while this unit is playing or recording a source. The sleep timer also automatically turns off any external components connected to the AC OUTLET(S).
SYSTEM OPTIONS 52 Y ou can use the following parame ters to adjust a variety of system settings and customize the wa y this unit operates. Change the initial settings (i ndicated in bold under each parameter) to refl ect the needs of your listening environment.

The unit directs the entire range of the surround back channel signal to the surround back left speaker .
64 SYSTEM OPTIONS SWFR Phase (Subwoofer Phase) If bass sounds are lacking or unclear , use this feature to adjust the frequency phase characteristics of your subwoofer . Choices: Normal , Reverse • Select “Normal” not to re verse the phase for your subwoofer(s).

If y ou can, the remote control code is correct. y If the manufacturer of your comp onent has more than one code, try each of them until you f ind the correct one.
74 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES 4 Press LEARN using a ballpoint pen or similar object. “LEARN” and the selected component name (ex. “DVD”) appear alternately in the display window . • Do not press and hold LEARN. If you hold it down for more than 3 seconds, the remo te enters the remote c ontrol code setting mode.
75 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES AD V ANCED OPERA TION Y ou can change the name th at appears in the display window on the remote control if you want to u se a diff erent name than the fact ory preset. This is useful when you have set the input select or to control a different component.
76 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES The Macro feature ma kes it possi ble to perform a series of operations with the press of a single button. For example, when you want to play a CD, normally you would turn on the co mponents, select the CD input, and press the play button to start playback.
77 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES AD V ANCED OPERA TION ■ Macro operations 1 Set MA CR O ON/OFF to ON. 2 Press a macro button. • When you have finished using the Macro feature, s et MACRO ON/OFF to OFF.
78 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES 4 Press the buttons for th e functions you want to include in the macro operation in sequence. Y ou can set up to 10 steps (10 functions). After you have set 10 s teps, “FULL” appears and the remote control automatical ly exits the macro mode.
79 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES AD V ANCED OPERA TION 5 Press CLEAR to exit from the clear mode. • “C;NG” appears in the disp lay window if clearing was unsuccessful.

81 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES AD V ANCED OPERA TION Once you set the appropriate remote control codes, you can use this remote to c ontrol your other components. Note that some buttons ma y not correctly operate the selected component. Use the input selector buttons to select the component you want to operate.
ZONE 2/ZONE 3 82 This unit allows you to configure a multi -room audio system. The Zone 2 and Zone 3 features en able you to set this unit to reproduce separate input s ources in the main room, second room (Zone 2) and third room (Zone 3). Y ou can control this unit from the second or third room using the supplied remote control.
83 ZONE 2/ZONE 3 AD V ANCED OPERA TION Using this unit’ s internal amplifier T o use this unit’ s internal amplifier, select “Internal” in Zone2 Amplifier 2 (page 67). Y ou can control the input or adjust the volume level for Zone 2 and Zone 3 compon ents using ZONE CONTROL on the front panel.
84 ZONE 2/ZONE 3 The supplied remote control can be used to control Zone 2/Zone 3. Y ou can even select the input source and control components located in the main room directly from the second/third room regardless of the listening condition in the main room.
