GETTING STARTED 3 English INTRODUCTION Please check t hat you recei ved all of the following parts. 1 Press the part and slide the battery compartment cover off. 2 Inser t four supplied batteries (AAA, R03, UM-4) accor ding to the polarity m arkings (+ and –) on the inside of the battery compartment.
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 4 1 ST AND BY/ON T urns on this unit or sets it to the standby mode. When you turn on this unit, you will hear a click and ther e will be a 4 to 5-second delay before this unit can reproduce sound. In standby mo de, this unit consumes a small amount of power in order to receive infrared-signa ls from the remote control.
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 5 English INTRODUCTION A PHONES (SILENT CINEMA) jack Outputs audio signals for pri v ate listening with headphones. When you connec t headphones, no sign als are output to the OUTPUT jacks or to the speakers. All Dolby Digital and DTS au dio signals are mix ed down to the left and right headphone channels.

13 English SPEAKER SE TUP PREP ARA TION Be sure to connect the lef t channel (L), right channel (R), “+” (red) and “–” (black) properly . If the connections are faulty , no sound will be heard from the speakers, and if the polarity of the speaker connect ions is incorrect, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.

AUTO SETUP 26 This receiv er employs Y AMAHA Parametric Room Acoustic Optimize r (YP A O) technology which lets you av oid troublesome listening-based speak er setup and achiev es highly accu rate sound adjustments. The supplied optimizer microphone collects and analyzes the sound your speakers produce in y our actual listening en vironment.
27 English AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION For best results, make sure th e room is as quiet as possible during the auto setup proced ure (YP A O). If there is too much ambient noise, the results may not be satisf actory .

35 English PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION • Some 6.1-channel compatible discs do not ha ve a signal (flag ) which this unit can automatically detect. When playing these kinds of discs with 6.1-channel, select a decoder (PLIIx Movie, PLIIx Music , EX/ES or EX) m anually .

37 English PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION ■ Downmixing to 2 c hannels Y ou can enjoy 2-chann el stereo playback e ven from multi- channel sources. Rotate PROGRAM (or press STEREO on the remote control) to select 2ch Stereo. 2ch Stereo y Y ou can use a subwoofer with this program when SWFR or BO TH is selected in “BASS OUT”.
38 PLAYBACK • When you play DTS-encoded CD/L Ds with the input mode set to A UTO: – This unit automatically switc hes to the DTS decoding mode. The unit remains in DTS mode (and the t indicator may flash) for up to 30 seconds after playback of the DTS source is complete.
TUNING 39 English BAS I C OPERA TION There are 2 tuning methods ; automatic and manual. Automatic tuning is ef fecti ve when station signals are strong and there is no in terference. ■ A utomatic tuning 1 Rotate INPUT to selec t TUNER as the input source.
40 TUNING ■ Manual tuning If the signal from the station you want to select is weak, tune into it manually . Manually tuning into an FM stati on will automatical ly switch the tuner to monaural re ception to increase the signal qualit y . 1 Select TUNER and the reception band follo wing steps 1 and 2 as described in “A utomatic tuning”.
41 English TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION 3 Press and hold MEMORY (MAN’L/A UTO FM) for more than 3 seconds. The preset number , the MEMOR Y and A UTO indicators flash. After about 5 seconds, automatic presetting starts from the frequency currently displayed and proceeds to ward the higher frequencies.
42 TUNING 4 Press PRESET/TUNING l / h to select a preset station number (1 through 8) while the MEMOR Y indicato r is flashing. Press h to select a higher preset station number . Press l to select a l o wer preset station n umber . 5 Press MEMOR Y (MAN’L/A UTO FM) on the front panel while the M EMOR Y indicator is flashing.

ADVANCED OPERATIONS 49 English AD V ANCED OPERA TION Y ou can display this unit’ s operating information on a video monitor . If you display the SET MENU and sound field pro gram parameter settings on a monitor , it is much easier to see the av ailable opti ons and parameters than it is by reading this information on the front panel display .
50 ADVANCED OPERATIONS ■ Canceling the sleep timer Press SLEEP rep eatedly until “SLEEP OFF” appears in the front panel display . After a few seconds, “SLEEP OFF” disappears, and the SLEEP indicator goes off.
51 English ADVANCED OPERATIONS AD V ANCED OPERA TION Y ou can use the test tone fe ature to manually balance your speaker lev els. Please note that this operation will override the le vel adjustm ents made in “A UTO SETUP” (page 26), “SPEAKER LEVEL” (page 56) and “Manually adjusting speaker le v els” (page 50).
SET MENU 52 Y ou can use the follo wing parameters in SET MENU to adjust a v ariety of system settings and customize the way this unit operates. Change the ini tial settings (indicated in bold under ea ch parameter) to reflect the needs of your listening en vironment.

56 SET MENU Subw oofer phase SUB WOOFER PHASE If bass sounds are lacking or unclear , use this feature to switch the phase of your subw oofer . Choices: NORMAL , REVERSE • Select NORMAL if you do not want to re verse the phase of your subw oofer . • Select REVERSE to re verse the phase of your subwoofer .
57 English SET MENU AD V ANCED OPERA TION ■ Center graphic equalizer D)CENTER GEQ Use this feature to adjust the built-in 5-band graphic equalizer for the center channel so that the tonal quality of the center speak er matches that of the front speak ers.
58 SET MENU Dialog lift DIALG.LIFT Use to turn on and off the DIALG.LIFT parameter (see page 78). This parame ter adjust s the height of the front and center channel sounds (dialog, v ocals, etc.) b y assigning some of the front an d center channel elements to the presence speak ers.

When you initialize a sound fie l d program group, all of the parameter values within that group rev ert to their initial settings.
REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES 62 In addition to controlling this unit, th e remote control can also operate other A/V compone nts made by Y AMAHA and other manufacturers. T o contro l other components, you must set up remote c ontrol with the appropriate manufacturer codes.
63 English REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES AD V ANCED OPERA TION Y ou can control other co mponents b y setting the appropriate manufacturer code s. Codes can be set up for each input area. The follow ing table sho ws the factory preset component (Library: component category ) and the manufacturer code for each area.

Y ou need the follo wing additional equipment to use the multi-room functions of this unit: • An infrared signal receiv er in the second room.

SOUND FIELD PARAMETER DESCRIPTIONS 75 English ADDITIONAL INFORMA TION Y ou can adjust the values of certain di gital sound field parameters so the sound fi elds are recreated accurately in your listening room. Not all of the following parameters are found in e very pro gram.
76 SOUND FIELD PARAMETER DESCRIPTIONS ■ LIVENESS Function: This parameter adjusts the r eflecti vity of t he virtual w alls in the hall b y changing the rate at which the early reflec tions decay .
77 English SOUND FIELD PARAMETER DESCRIPTIONS ADDITIONAL INFORMA TION ■ REV .TIME (Re verberat ion time) Function: This parameter adjusts the am ount of time it takes for the dense, subsequent re v erberation sound to decay by 60 dB (at 1 kHz). This changes the appa rent size of the acoustic environment o ver an extremely wide range.
78 SOUND FIELD PARAMETER DESCRIPTIONS ■ DIALG.LIFT (Dialog lift) Function: This parameter adjusts the hei ght of the front and center channel s ounds b y assigning some of the front and center cha nnel elements to the presence spe akers. Description: The larger the parame ter , the higher the position of the front and center ch annel sound.

RESETTING THE FACTORY PRE SETS 84 If you want to reset all of your unit’ s parameters for any reason, do the follo wing. This procedure completely reset s ALL parameters, including th e SET MENU, lev el, assign and tuner presets. Be sure this unit is in standb y mode.
