1 Safety information EMU33622 Outboard motor safety Observe these precautions at all times. EMU36501 Propeller People can be injured or killed if they come in contact with the propeller. The prop eller can keep moving even when the motor is in neu - tral, and sharp edges of the propeller can cut even when stationary.

Components 24 EMU40610 Remote control box The remote control box is equipped with the remote control lever and electrical s witches. EMU26190 Remote control lever Moving the lev er forward from the neutral po- sition engages forward gear. Pulling the leve r back from neutral engages reverse.
Components 25 EMU26233 Free accele rato r To open the throttle without shifting into eithe r forward or reverse, p ush the free accelerator button and move the remote control lev er. T IP: ● The free accelerator button can only be pushed when the remote control lever is in the neutral position.
Components 26 2. To increase resistance, turn the adjuster clockwise. To decrease re sistance, turn the adjuster counterclockw ise. WARNING! Do not overtighten the fric- tion adjuster. If there is too much re- sistance, it could be difficult to move the remote control lever, which could result in an accident.

Instruments and indica tors 31 EMU41390 Digital tachometer The tachometer shows the engine speed and has the following function s. All segments of the display will light momen- tarily after the m ain switch is turned on and will return to normal thereafter.
Instruments and indicators 32 NOT ICE ECM02300 ● Do not continue to operate the engine if the low oil pressure-alert indicator is on and the engine oil pressure is low. Seri- ous engine damage will occur. ● The low oil pressure-alert indicator does not indicate the engine oil level.
Instruments and indica tors 33 EMU26713 Fuel gauge Eight segments indicate the fuel l evel. When all segments are showing, the fuel tank is full. The fuel level reading can be inaccurate due to the position of the sensor in th e fuel tank and the attitude of the boat in the water.

Instruments and indicators 36 If twin engines are installed on your boat, the gauge will only displ ay the total fuel economy of both engines. ● Fuel consumption varies greatly with boat design, weight, propeller used, en gine trim angle, sea conditions (inc luding wind), and throttle position.

In such an event, stop the eng ine and drain the water from the separator. This indicator only operates when a water separator sensor is eq uipped.

The engine speed will automatically decrease to about 2000 r/min. Stop the engine immediately if the buzzer sounds and the overheat alert devic e has ac- tivated.

Engine control sys tem 44 If the alert s ystem has activated, stop the en - gine as soon as it is safe to do so. Check the oil level and add engine oil as needed. If the oil level is correct a nd the alert system does not switch off, consult yo ur Yamaha dealer.
Engine control system 45 NOT ICE ECM02340 Although the buzzer will stop when the en- gine is started and the remote control le- ver is moved to the forward or reverse position, do not use t he outboard motor. Otherwise, serious engine damage could occur.
Installation 46 EMU41212 Installation The information presented in this section is in- tended as reference only . It is not possible to provide complete instruct ions for every possi- ble boat and outboard m otor combination. Proper mounting depends in part on experi- ence and the specific boat and outboard mo - tor combination.

Operation 48 EMU36381 First-time operation EMU40510 Filling engine oil The outboard motor is shipped from the fac to- ry without engine oil. If your Yamaha dealer did not fill the engine with engine oil , you must fill the engine before starting it.
Operation 49 EMU40520 Fuel level Check that you have plenty of fuel for your trip. A good rule of thumb is to use 1/3 of you r fuel to get to the des tination, 1/3 to return, and to keep 1/3 as an emergency reserve. With the boat level o n a trailer or in the water, turn the main switch to the “” (on) position and check the fuel le vel.
Operation 50 EMU40541 Controls ● Turn the steering w heel fully to port and starboard. Check that op eration is smooth and unrestricted throughout the whole range with no bind ing or excessive free play. ● Operate the remote co ntrol lever several times to chec k that there is no hesitation in its travel.

NOTICE: If the top cowling is not installed cor- rectly, water can enter the top cowling and damage the engine, or the top cowling can blow off at high speeds.
Operation 53 2. Operate each of the power trim and tilt switches on the bottom cowling and re- mote control leve r to check that all switch- es work. 3. Tilt the outboard motor up and check that the tilt rod and trim rods are extended comp le tely . 4.
Operation 54 5. If you use a portabl e container to store and disp ense fuel, only use a loca lly ap- proved GASOLINE containe r. 6. Touch the fuel nozzle to the filler opening or funnel to help prevent ele ctrostatic sparks. 7. Fill the fuel tank, but do not overfill.
Operation 55 1. Move the remote c ontrol lever to the neu- tral position. T IP: The start-in-gear protection device prevents the engine from starti ng except when in neu- tral. 2. Attach the engine shut-off cord to a se - cure place on your clothing, or your arm or leg.
Operation 56 5. Immediately after the engine starts, re - lease the main switch to return it to the “” (on) position. NO TICE: Ne ver tu rn the main switch to “” (start) while the engine is running. Do not keep the starter motor turning for more than 5 seconds.

Operation 61 Bow Down Too much trim-in causes the boat to “ plow ” through the water, decreasing fuel economy and making it hard to increase speed.
Operation 62 2. Push the “” (up) side of the power trim and tilt switch to fully tilt the outboard mo- tor up. 3. If you have the tilt support shaft, install the tilt support shaft. For information on installing the tilt support shaft, see page 29.

Maintenance 73 EMU40662 Inspecting spark plug The spark plug is an important engine compo- nent. The condition of the spark plug can indi - cate something about the c ondition of the engine. For example, if the c enter electrode porcelain is very white, this cou ld indicate an intake air leak or carburetion problem in that cylinder.
Maintenance 74 2. Measure the spark plug gap using a thickness ga uge. If the spark pl ug gap is out of specification, replace the spark plug with the specifie d plug. To install the spark plug 1. Wipe off any dirt from the threads, insula - tor, and gasket surface of the spark plug.
Maintenance 75 Procedure for changing engine oil using an oil changer 1. Place the outboard motor in a v ertical po- sition (not tilted). NO TICE: If the out- board motor is not level, the oil level indicated on the oil dipstick may not be accurate. [ECM018 61] 2.
Maintenance 76 9. Install the oil filler c ap and oil dipstick. 10. Leave the outboard motor for 5-10 min - utes. 11. Remove the oil di pstick and wipe it clean. 12. Insert the oil dip stick completely and re- move it again. 13. Check that the oil l evel on the oil dipstick is between the upper and lower marks.
Maintenance 77 EMU40891 Inspecting propeller W ARNI NG EWM02561 You could be seriously injured if the en- gine accidentally starts when you are near the propeller.
Maintenance 78 3. Remove the propeller, spac er, and thrust washer . EMU40943 Installing propelle r NOT ICE ECM00501 Make sure to use a new cotter pin and bend the ends over s ecurely. Otherwise, the propeller could come off during opera- tion and be lost.
Maintenance 79 2. Place a suitable container under the gea r case . 3. Loosen the bolt, and then remove the cooling water i nlet covers on both sides of the gear case. 4. Remove the gear oil drain s crew and gas- ket. 5. Remove the oil level plu g and gasket to allow the gear oil to drain com pletely.
Maintenance 80 8. Put a new gasket on the oil level plug. When the gear oil begins to flow out of the oil level plug hole, insert and tighten the oil level plug to the speci fied torque. 9. Put a new gasket on the gear oil drain screw. Insert and tighten the gear oil drain screw to the specified torque.
Maintenance 81 2. Check that the battery is in good condi- tion and fully charged. If your boat is equipped with the d igital speedometer or Command Li nk tachometer, the voltme- ter and low battery alert functions will help you monitor the battery ’ s charge.

Trouble Recovery 87 4. Disconnect the water detection switch coupler. NOTICE : Be careful not to get any water on the water detection switch coupler, otherwise a malfunc- tion could occur.
