W ARNINGS •Do not use telescope or finderscope to look a t the sun without an appropria te solar filter . •Mak e sure no scre ws are loose before using telescope . •Do not drop , shak e, or throw your telescope as doing so may damage the telescope or people around y ou.

A telescope is carefully aligned during construction and great care should be taken to maintain this alignment over the life of the telescope. Cleaning should be done as little as possible and then only with a mild soap solution and soft, lint-free cloth.
8 . Assemble optical tube assembly . Remo ve thumbscre ws on finderscope mounting bolts . S lide finderscope mounting brack et onto mounting bolts so that bracket is angled to- w ard front of telescope . R eplace and tighten thumbscre ws to secure br acket.
F INDERSCOPE A LIGNMENT 1. Insert the lo west pow er ey epiece into the ey epiece adapter . F ocus ey epiece to view an easily recognizab le distant object (car license plate , sign, table , etc.). 2 . Look through finderscope being careful not to mo ve the telescope in any w ay .
U SING THE C LOCK D RIVE The clock drive included with your telescope is designed to track the move- ment of stars. It will help keep stars in your eld of view during long periods of viewing as long as the telescope is properly polar aligned and the clock drive is properly used.
B EGINNING O BSERVATION For beginning observa tion, the moon is one of the easiest and most enjoy- ab le objects to view . Y ou can acquaint y ourself with the mo vements of the telescope by simply pointing the telescope at the moon and using the various adjustments to mo ve the telescope .
A DVANCED O BSERVATION S TAR C HARTS AND S ETTING C IRCLES S tar charts and setting circles will allo w you to find the loca tion of any kno wn celestial objects vie w able by y our telescope.
N ORTHERN H EMISPHERE P OLAR A LIGNMENT 1. T o align y our telescope in the N orthern H emisphere , first find the loca tion of P olaris in the night sky . Y ou can easily find polaris b y using the Big Dipper to “point” at P olaris . The two stars which make up the edge of the dipper in the Big Dip- per will roughly “point” at P olaris .
S OUTHERN H EMISPHERE & S TAR D RIFT P OLAR A LIGNMENT P olar alignment in the Southern H emisphere is more difficult that in the N orthern H emisphere because there is no corresponding pole star to use for alignment in the Southern H emisphere . P olar aligning in the Southern H emishpere is a tw o part process because of this .
S OUTHERN H EMISPHERE & S TAR D RIFT P OLAR A LIGNMENT 1. Having already roughly aligned your telescope, loosen the declination clamp and swivel telescope until scale reads 90°, then retighten clamp. Loosen the right ascension clamp and rotate telescope so that it points 6 hours away from the celestial pole and retighten clamp.
F INDING C ELESTIAL O BJECTS Once your telescope is polar aligned, you must set the hour circle in order to use the measurements listed on the mount to nd celestial objects. Once the hour circle is properly set, you will be able to use the coordinates listed on star charts to nd objects for viewing in the night sky .

A STRONOMY T ERMINOLOGY D ECLINA TION (D EC .) - The astronomical equivalent of latitude . Declination describes the angle of a celestial object abov e or below the celestial equator . The sky ov er the northern hemisphere has a positive declination. The sky o ver the Southern hemisphere has a neg ative declination.
T ELESCOPE T ERMINOLOGY O BJECTIVE - The objective is the front lens of a telescope. The measurement listed for objec- tive lenses is the diameter of the lens . A larger objective allo ws more light to enter a telescope and pro vides a brighter image .
