4 Quick Start and Referenc e Guide Introduction Welcome t o the w orld of USB f axmodems. A f axmodem equipped with a U niver sal Serial Bus, or USB, means con- venience, ease of inst allation, and high per formance.
Introduction 5 If you want to use the modem as a t elephone answering machine, you’ll also need: • A soundcard, microphone, and speakers or an ear - phone (PC model s) • A microphone and speakers if not prov ided with your computer (Macinto sh models).

8 Quick Start and Referenc e Guide 5 The READY light should go on to show tha t the fax- modem is ready for use. Note: I f the comput er goes into pow er-save mode (also re ferred to as “ going to slee p”), the mo- dem’s READY light will go off.

The sof twar e sets itself up aut omati- cally and takes care of sending any necessar y commands to the fax mo dem.
Chapter 2: Using the Fax modem 13 Tips for Selecting Setup Optio ns In setting up som e old er so ftware p rograms , you m ay be asked to enter cert ain informat ion. Most progr ams have default sett ings that are corr ect for use w ith th is modem, and there is no need to change t hem.

Chapter 3: Solving Common Probl ems 17 Solution: Your modem has a small speaker on its board that giv es you audible feedback of dial t ones and remote connection signals (“handshaking”). This is not the same as t he speaker th at you may have connected t o your computer’s sound- card.
18 Quick Start and Reference Gui de Make sure your mo dem ha s hung u p from the previous call. Select Hang Up in your softwa re or ty pe ATH in terminal mode. On-line Troubles hooting Problem: Your modem disconnects while communicat- ing with a remote system.
Chapter 3: Solving Common Probl ems 19 Problem: Your modem does not make a connection. Solution: If your modem places calls but nev er makes a connection, make sure you ar e dialing the right number.
Appendix A 20 Appendix A: Removin g a PC’s In ternal Mo dem If your PC does not already hav e an internal modem in- stalled, or if you are replacing an ext ernal modem, you do not need this section. Note: Althou gh you do no t have to remo ve you r internal modem, we recommend that you do so .
