ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide 140 Appendix C Wireless LANs Figure 106 RTS /C T S When station A sends data to the AP , it might no t know that the station B is already using the channel.
ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide Appendix C Wir eless LANs 141 A large Fragmentation Thr eshold is recommended for networks not prone to interference while you should set a smaller thresh old for busy networks or ne tworks that are prone to interference.
ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide 142 Appendix C Wireless LANs • Authentication Determines the identity of the users. • Authorization Determines the network services available to authenticated users once they are connected to the network. • Accounting Keeps track of the client’ s network activity .
ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide Appendix C Wir eless LANs 143 EAP Authentication EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) is an au thentication protocol that runs on top of the IEEE802.1x transport mech anism in order to support multiple types of user au thentication.
ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide 144 Appendix C Wireless LANs However , MD5 authentication has some weakness es. Since the authenticat ion server needs to get the plaintext passwords, the passwords mu st be stored. Thus someone other than the authentication server may access the password file.
ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide Appendix C Wir eless LANs 145 WEP Authentication S t ep s Three different methods can be used to auth enticate wireless stations to the network: Open System , Shar ed Key , and Auto . The following figure illust rates the steps involved.
ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide 146 Appendix C Wireless LANs Dynamic WEP Key Exchange The AP maps a unique ke y that is generated w ith the RADIUS server . This key expires when the wireless connection times out, disconnects or reauthentic ation times out.
ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide Appendix C Wir eless LANs 147 TKIP uses 128-bit keys that are dyna mically genera ted and distributed by the authe ntication server . It includes a per-packet key mixing function, a Message Inte grity Check (MIC) named Michael, an extended initialization vector (IV) with sequen cing rules, and a re-keying mechanism.
ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide 148 Appendix C Wireless LANs If the roaming feature is not enabled on the access points, information is not communicated between the access points when a wireless st ation moves between coverage are as. The wireless station may not be able to communicate with other wireless stations on the network and vice versa.
ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide Appendix C Wir eless LANs 149 5 The access points must be connected to the Et hernet and be able to get IP addresses from a DHCP server if using dynamic IP address assignment.

ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide Appendix D IP Subnetting 151 A PPENDIX D IP Subnetting IP Addressing Routers “route” based on the network number . The router that delivers the data packet to the correct destination host uses the host ID.
ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide 152 Appendix D IP Subne tting Since the first octet of a class “A” IP address must contain a “0”, the first octet of a class “A” address can have a valu e of 0 to 127.
ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide Appendix D IP Subnetting 153 Since the mask is always a continuous number of ones begin ning from the left, fo llowed by a continuous number of zeros for the remainder of the 32 bit mask, you can si mply specify the number of ones instead of writing the value of each octet.
ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide 154 Appendix D IP Subne tting Note: In the following chart s, shaded/bolded last octet bit values indicate host ID bit s “borrowed” to form network ID bit s. The number of “borrowed” host ID bits determines the number of sub nets y ou can have.
ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide Appendix D IP Subnetting 155 Example: Four Subnet s The above exampl e illustrated using a 25-bit subne t mask to divide a class “C” address space into two subnets.
ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide 156 Appendix D IP Subne tting Example Eight Subnet s Similarly use a 27-bit mask to create 8 subnets (001 , 010, 01 1, 100, 101, 1 10). The following table shows class C IP ad dress last octet values for each subnet. The following table is a summary for class “C” subnet planning.
ZyXEL G-570S User’s Guide Appendix D IP Subnetting 157 Subnetting With Class A and Class B Networks. For class “A” and class “B” addresses the subnet ma sk also determines which bits are part of the network number and which are part of the host ID.
