12 USB DIRECTORS RS-232 2.2 The Complete Package In addition to the USB Director RS-232, you should have received: • (1) 1-m (3.3-ft.) USB cable. • (1) CD with driver and utility software. • This manual. If anything is missing or damaged, please contact Black Box immediately at 724-746-5500.
13 CHAPTER 3: Installation 3. Installation 3.1 Installing the Hardware Plug the Type A end of the included 1-m (3.3-ft.) USB cable into the USB port located in the back of your PC or into an available USB port on a standard USB hub or USB switch. Plug the Type B end of the USB cable into the back of the USB Director RS-232.
14 USB DIRECTORS RS-232 Plug your RS-232 device(s), or the cables running to them (not included), into the USB Director RS-232’s DB9 male serial connector(s). Any device or cable that can be attached directly to a DB9 serial port on a PC can be attached to the DB9 connector(s) on a USB Director RS-232.
15 CHAPTER 3: Installation 3.2 Installing the Software Drivers These installation instructions are for installing the USB Director RS-232 software from CD. NT users will not be prompted and will need to locate the driver by double- clicking on their CD-ROM drive.
16 USB DIRECTORS RS-232 3. When the Select Other Location dialog box appears, type “X:Win95” (where “X” is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive) and click “OK.” 4. Confirm that Windows has found the correct driver location and click “Finish.
17 CHAPTER 3: Installation 2. If you haven’t already done so, follow the hardware-installation instructions in Section 3.1 . After connecting the USB cable, the Add New Hardware Wizard should appear. Click “Next.” 3. Select “Search for the best driver for your device” and click “Next.
18 USB DIRECTORS RS-232 3.2.3 W INDOWS NT Because Microsoft does not support USB in NT4.0, we supply a USB stack that will be installed along with the necessary drivers. NOTE You must install the drivers using an account that has administrative privileges! To install the USB stack and USB Director RS-232 drivers, either: 1a.
19 CHAPTER 3: Installation Once the driver installation program has begun, follow the on-screen instructions. 3a. If you are installing drivers for the first time: An Information dialog box informs you that the installation was successful. After clicking “OK,” the installation is complete.
20 USB DIRECTORS RS-232 If you haven’t already done so, follow the hardware- installation instructions in Section 3.1 . When that’s finished, your new communication ports, numbered sequentially following the existing ports in your system, are ready.
21 CHAPTER 3: Installation 5. Select “Specify a location” and click “Next.” 6. Type in “X:Win2k” (where “X” is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive)and click “OK.” 7. Confirm that Windows is pointing to X:Win2k (where “X” is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive).
22 USB DIRECTORS RS-232 4. Operation Once you finish installing the hardware and software of the USB Director RS-232, it will operate continuously without requiring further intervention on your part.
23 CHAPTER 4: Operation • It lights green to indicate that the USB Director RS-232’s serial ports are successfully set up and the unit is operating normally, but there’s not currently any data activity. 4.2 Using the Edgeport Utility Program 4.2.
24 USB DIRECTORS RS-232 2. Allows you to configure how COM ports will be assigned. The driver supports COM-port number assignment in two ways: 1. Assigning COM ports based on units’ serial numbers.
25 CHAPTER 4: Operation When using this mode, units are identified not by their serial number, but by a 2- to 7- digit number that identifies which USB port they are plugged into. After changing this setting, you will need to reboot before the change takes effect.
26 USB DIRECTORS RS-232 5. T r oubleshooting 5.1 Using USB with Windows 95 If you’re having difficulty installing or operating your USB Director RS-232 in a Windows 95 system, check the revision level of your copy of Windows 95. If you are using Windows 95 OSR2.
27 CHAPTER 5: Troubleshooting After installing USB Support from your Microsoft Windows 95 OEM system disk, check your Device Manager again. If the two devices are not present or Windows Plug & Play does not autodetect the USB Director RS-232, try the following: 1.
28 USB DIRECTORS RS-232 5.1.2 D ETERMINING THE L EVEL OF USB S UPPORT If you have an earlier version of Windows 95 than OSR2.1, you will need to upgrade to a more recent version of Windows. Otherwise, to determine if your system supports USB, take the following steps: 1.
29 CHAPTER 5: Troubleshooting 5.1.3 C HECKING FOR F ULL USB S UPPORT IN THE D EVICE M ANAGER To determine whether the Windows 95 Device Manager fully supports USB, take the following steps: 1. From the main desktop area of Windows, right- click on the My Computer icon and choose Properties to open the System Properties window.
30 USB DIRECTORS RS-232 If you do not see one or both of these devices, go on to Section 5.1.4 . 5.1.4 D ETERMINING W HY S UPPORT I S N OT P RESENT The DETAILS button in the USBREADY program (see Section 5.1.2 ) can help you determine what is preventing USB support.
31 CHAPTER 5: Troubleshooting If the Test Results Details dialog box shows Windows 95 version 4.0.950 or 4.0.950a, these Windows 95 versions do not support the upgrade path to USB. Unfortunately, Microsoft has not provided an upgrade path to OSR2 from earlier of these versions of Windows.
32 USB DIRECTORS RS-232 5.2 Calling Black Box If your USB Director RS-232 seems to be malfunctioning, do not attempt to alter or repair it . It contains no user-serviceable parts. Call Black Box Technical Support at 724-746-5500; the problem might be solvable over the phone.
33 CHAPTER 5: Troubleshooting 5.3 Shipping and Packaging If you need to transport or ship your USB Director RS-232: • Package it carefully. We recommend that you use the original container. • If the shipping is return- or repair-related, include everything you received with the unit when you pack it.
34 USB DIRECTORS RS-232 SOFTWARE RESTRICTIONS If the USB Director RS-232’s software is being used by the U.S. government: Use, duplication, or disclosure by the government is subject to the restrictions set forth in subparagraph (c) (1) (ii) of the Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software clause of DFARS 52.
