1 I NTRODUCTION The 3Com â F ast EtherLink â Parallel T asking â 10/100BASE-T EISA adapter (3C597-TX) is a 32-bit adapter for use in personal computers with an Extended Industr y Standard Architecture (EISA) computer bus. In this guide the adapter is referr ed to as the F ast EtherLink EISA adapter .

2-2 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE H ARDWARE Inspecting the Adapter Before installing the adapter in y our computer , you should visually inspect it for damage that might have occurred during shipment from the factor y . CAUTION: Each adapter is packed in an antistatic container to protect it during shipment.

2-4 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE H ARDWARE C onfirming Adapter Installation If you are installing the 3C597 EISA adapter in a computer running Windows 95, you can confirm the adapter’ s installation by following these steps: 1 After starting Windows 95, double-click the My C omputer icon.
Connecting to the Network 2-5 C onnecting to the Network This section describes how to connect 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps network cables to the F ast EtherLink EISA adapter . Y ou must connect the adapter to the network before loading drivers . The backplate of the F ast EtherLink EISA adapter contains one RJ-45 connector .
2-6 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE H ARDWARE The F ast EtherLink EISA adapter uses an on-board transceiver with twisted-pair cable. T o establish a valid 10 Mbps connection, the cable must be connec ted to a 10BASE-T hub . T o establish a valid 100 Mbps connection, the cable must be connected to a 100BASE-TX hub.
Auto Select Media Type 2-7 A uto Select Media T ype The Auto Select Media T ype func tion is implemented by all drivers contained on the 3C59X EtherDisk diskette supplied with the 3C597-TX EISA adapter . T his includes NetW are ODI drivers and NDIS 2.
3 C ONFIGURING THE A DAPTER This chapter explains how to configur e the F ast EtherLink EISA adapter using the EISA configuration diskette that came with your computer and the EtherDisk diskette supplied with the adapter . The configuration process is shown in F igure 3-1.

Configuring the Adapter 3-3 4 F ollow the on-line prompts and the instructions that accompanied your EISA c omputer and then run the EISA configuration utility . The sequence of configur ation steps required for some EISA computers may vary from the steps explained here.

Software Option Settings 3-5 Media T ype T wo media speeds and the Auto Select Media Type function are av ailable, as shown in T able 3-1. Refer to the section “ Auto Select Media T ype” in Chapt er 2 for information on this function.

Loading NetWare ODI Drivers 4-7 If you experience problems that occur only when using the AutoLink program, display or print the AUT OLINK.LOG file . The A UTOLINK.L OG file contains a log of all the events that occurred during the AutoLink installation and configuration process.
4-8 C HAPTER 4: L OADING N ETWORK D RIVERS If you are running NetW are and you need to install multiple 3C597-TX F ast EtherLink EISA adapters in an EISA-compliant computer , follow these st eps to install the NetW are ODI client driver: 1 Make sure your c omputer is turned off .

4-12 C HAPTER 4: L OADING N ETWORK D RIVERS The 3C59X EtherDisk diskette contains a NetW are 4.x ser ver driver (3C59X.LAN) and the NetW are Loadable Modules (NLMs) that enable the NetW are 4.x driver to be used with NetW are 3.11, 3.12, or 4.0x software.

Follow these steps: 1 After inserting the F ast EtherLink EISA adapter , connecting it to the network, and running the configuration utility program, reboot your computer .

5 P ERF ORMING T ROUBLESHOO TING AND D IA GNOSTIC T ESTS This chapter explains how to isolat e and solve F ast EtherLink EISA adapter problems. Make sure that the adapter is c orrectly installed and configured in a c omputer with the Extended Industr y Standard Architecture (EISA) bus .
5-2 C HAPTER 5: P ERFORMING T ROUBLESHOOTING AND D IAGNOSTIC T ESTS The 3Com diagnostic progr am is a DOS program. If you are running an operating system or interface other than DOS, refer to the section “ Accessing DOS ” in Chapter 4.
Starting the Diagnostic Program 5-3 T ypes of T ests The diagnostic tests are divided into the f ollowing groups. The Group 1 tests (default) check the ph ysical components and circuitry on the adapter . The Group 2 test (Netw ork Loopback T est) is not used on twisted-pair adapters such as the F ast EtherLink EISA adapter .
5-4 C HAPTER 5: P ERFORMING T ROUBLESHOOTING AND D IAGNOSTIC T ESTS 4 The first time you use the EtherDisk diskett e, a license screen appears. T o accept the terms and conditions of the 3Com end-user software license agreement, type the following: Y 5 When the auto installation screen appears , as shown in Figur e 3-2, press [Enter].
Starting the Diagnostic Program 5-5 T o run the tests continuously , go to the Repetitions box on the T est Setup screen, and select Continuous (and deselect Halt on Error in the Errors bo x).
5-6 C HAPTER 5: P ERFORMING T ROUBLESHOOTING AND D IAGNOSTIC T ESTS Setting Up an Echo Server T o test 10 Mbps operation of the F ast EtherLink EISA adapter , use a computer as an echo server that contains a 3Com 10 Mbps adapter or another F ast EtherLink EISA adapter running at 10 Mbps.
Starting the Diagnostic Program 5-7 Starting the Group 3 T est T o run the Group 3 test on a F ast EtherLink EISA adapter , follow these st eps: 1 Star t the Configur ation and Diagnostic Pr ogram. This program must be on the computer containing the adapter you want to t est.
5-8 C HAPTER 5: P ERFORMING T ROUBLESHOOTING AND D IAGNOSTIC T ESTS Getting Help If a T est F ails If any test fails , you can get additional information as follo ws: ■ Select the test that failed in the Run T ests dialog box and press [Enter]. ■ Select the Zo om button and press [Enter].
Changing the Test Setup 5-9 If the working adapter passes all tests, the original adapter is probably defective . F or information on returning products for repair , refer to Appendix B, “ T echnical Suppor t.” 6 Install the adapter in another functioning EISA computer and run the tests again.

LEDs 5-11 LEDs Each F ast EtherLink EISA adapter has three LEDs , as shown in F igure 5-2. Figure 5-2 F ast EtherLink Adapter Backplate T able 5-2 summarizes F ast EtherLink EISA adapter LED functions. The adapter must be physically c onnected to the network and network drivers must be loaded for the LEDs to work.
5-12 C HAPTER 5: P ERFORMING T ROUBLESHOOTING AND D IAGNOSTIC T ESTS If you experience any problems , first make sure that the appropriate driver is loaded , that the proper cable is connected to the adapter port, and that the hub complies with the adapter specifications (10 Mbps 10BASE-T or 100 Mbps 100BASE-TX).
