When unp acking the Brady M-Se r i e s Printe r, make sur e yo u save all pa cking ma terials. On ce the print er is out of th e b ox, rais e the print e r’s Medi a Access Door and rem ove the power cord. Insp ect th e prin ter for possibl e damag e incurre d duri ng ship ment.
Should i t become ne cessary to s hip your pri nter, remove any rib bon a n d paper roll f rom the su pply spool s, other wise dama ge to th e prin ter coul d result. Careful ly pack the printer in a s uitable contain er to avoi d damage dur ing trans it.
A user- repl aceable AC P ower Fu se is locate d just above t he Power ON/OFF Switch. (See Figure 2.1 . ) For a 100-12 0 VAC i n st a l l a t i on , the replacement fuse is a 3AG F ast Blow style r ated a t 5 Amp/ 250VAC. For a 22 0-240 VAC install a tion, the fuse is the s am e s t yle bu t ra te d at 3 Amp/250VAC.

Each segm ent has a S pring Plate o n it. It is imp ortant tha t these Spring Pl ates be in ali gnment prior to installin g the ribbon roll on t he s pindle .

Fo llow the in structio ns describe d in Roll M edia. The Rew ind Op tion must be insta lled in t he p rinter . To initia lly confi gure t he pri nter for this mode, follow t hese s teps: 1 . Remove t he Med ia Rewi nd Pl ate fr om its storage loca tion i n fron t of the printh ead in side the medi a com partment.
To load fa nfold med ia, place the fanfold me dia in the bo ttom or to th e re ar of the media comp artmen t and threa d it throu gh the print head as shown in F igure 2.6. Adjust t he m edia guid e us ing the thu mb screw to ke e p the me dia from drif ting left or right.
To remove used ribbon, r ef er to Figure 2.7 a nd follow the ste ps bel ow. 1 . Pu ll the hoo k out slight ly, then rota te the hook back-and- forth sever al t imes as sho wn and rem ove it from the spindle. 2 . Gras p the used rib- bon a nd re move it from the Ri bbon Take-Up Spin dle.

Now that yo ur p r inte r i s r eady for operation, how do es it work? The B rady M -Se ries Pr int er is d esig ned to r eceiv e ins tructi ons fr om a hos t compu ter, such as an IB M-compat ible P C.
Black-Mark Sensi ng Mode In Black- Mark Sensing M ode, you use continuou s media ( no notch o r gap) having bla ck mar ks printed on the back of th e label li ner for each lab el.

The CANCEL key is only reco gnized i n PAUSE mode. Pres s CANC EL to cancel the curr ent label forma t. If n o forma t is printing , th en the nex t one to be pr inted will be canc eled. If no formats a re in me mory , the CAN C EL k ey is i g nor e d.
Refe r to Figu re 3.1 for the l ocation of the lig hts. Note : If an operating conditi on which causes a light to be ON constant ly and one which causes the same light to Flash occur si mul taneously, the l ight Flashes. POWER ON Printer is ON. PRINTHEAD OFF Normal operation.
A Power ON Self Test (POST) is performed each tim e the pr inter is turned ON. This test checks f or pr oper initia lization of various electronic circ uits and e stablishes starting parameters as those stored in the printer’s memory. During this test sequence, the front panel lights will tur n O N a nd O FF to e nsure proper operation.
This self test prints a single lab e l w hich conta ins a lis ting o f th e print er’s curren t confi guration p aramete rs stored in Config uration (E EP ROM ) Mem ory. Pr ess th e CAN CEL ke y wh il e tu rn i ng th e AC Power Switch ON. See Figure 3.
This s e l f test is actu a l ly comp r i sed of fou r in dividual te st feat ures . 1 . The init ial self t e s t prints 15 labels at spe ed “ A” (2" per se c - ond ) th en automa ticall y PAUS ES the print e r. Each time the PAUS E key is pre ssed, an add itiona l 15 labels pr int out.
This sel f test can be use d to provide the test print outs requi red when making a djustme nts to the pr inter’s me chanic al asse mblies. See the sample prin tout in Fig ure 3.3. The CANCEL Key Sel f Test sh ould be per formed bef ore this self test .
Pressi ng these two keys at th e same ti me, while turnin g the Power ON, tem porarily r esets the Printe r Configu r ati on to th e fa c t ory defau lt values. These values will b e active unt il Pow er is turn e d OF F . When ever th e printer is reset to factory defa ults, a Med ia Ca li bra tion proce d ure m ust b e perfo rmed im med iately .

The Con figura tion Mode a llows you to f ine-tun e th e internal print e r c onfiguration se ttings for your applicati on. In this m ode, you can c hange the f o llowing param eters: • P ri nti ng .

This p r o cedure se ts the dar kness o f th e printing o n the labe l. Use the lowest set ting wh ich provid e s t he n ecessa ry pr int q uality . 1 . P ress the MODE key. PAUSE and DARKEN l ights turn ON. 2 . Pres s UP or DOWN to adjust the cu rrent setti ng.
The B rady M -Seri es Pr inter sends and recei ves Ame rican Sta n dar d Code for Informa tion Int erchange (A SCII). This c ode consi sts of 128 chara cters (256 for Co de Page 850) inc luding upper a nd lower case lette rs, punctu ation m a rks , and variou s control codes .
Whe n communi cating via the seria l data port (RS-23 2), the baud rate, num ber of data bits, and th e p arity are use r-selectabl e (see Sec tion 4 fo r ac ceptab le set ting com binat ions). Pa rity o nly a p p l i e s t o d a t a t r a n s m i t t e d b y t h e p r i n t e r , since it ignore s the parity of r ec eived da t a.
Request To Send (R TS) is a Control Signal fro m the M-Seri es Prin ter to th e host c ompute r. RTS is always in the A CTIVE condi tion (po sitive volta ge) whene ver the prin ter is powe r ed ON. Data Se t Ready ( DSR) is a c ontrol signa l from th e host c ompute r to th e prin ter.
The pr inter is conf igured a s Data Terminal Equipm e nt (DTE). To connec t the printer to ot her DTE device s (such as the se r i a l por t of a PC), use an RS- 232 Null Modem (cro ssover) cable. F igure 5 .2 illustr ates the connectio ns req uired for this cable.
The requ ired cable must have a standard 3 6-pin para llel conne ctor on on e end, which is plugg ed into th e mating conn e cto r located a t the u pper re ar of the pr inter. The para llel i nterfa ce c able i s connec ted using ba il clip s, instead of screws, in a similar p osition to th a t o f th e serial data cable.
The f oll owing char t pr ovides a descr ipt ion of each o f the pins in the par a l lel c o nnector. A stan dard parallel da ta cable will pr ovide the req uired inte rconnec tion betw een the com puter and the pr i n te r . IEE E 1284- B Connec tor Pin Assignm e nts Pi n No.
Thi s sect ion cont ains P revent ive Maint enance inform ation f or t he Brady M - S eries Printer. Th e s e proc edures may be performe d by the oper ator. The exter ior surfaces of the print er may be cleaned as requi re d b y using a lint fr e e c loth.
Inconsi stent prin t qualit y, such as v oids in the ba r code or graphic s, may in dicate a dirty p rinthead . For optimu m perfo r ma nce, Brady re commen ds performing t he cle aning proce dure on page 6-3 afte r eve ry roll of ribbo n (after every r oll of media , for di r ec t thermal pr inting ).
It is not necessar y to turn printer power OFF prior to cle anin g . I f p o w er is turned OFF, all label f ormats, images, and parameter settings stored in the pr inter’s f or m atting RAM will be lost. Permanent parameter settings stor ed in E EPROM w ill be retained.

Note : The 200M has one toggle, th e 260M prin te r has two toggl es. The togg le(s) sh ould be positi oned to prov ide ev e n p r ess ure o n the media. Toggles are positioned by sliding them left or r i g h t t o t he d e sired locat ion. On the 200 M, the sing le toggle sho uld norma lly be positio ned over th e ce nter of the me dia.
This sen sor position requires no adjustm ent or cali bration by th e user. The tr ansmissive media se nsor senses e ither the “ w eb” between labels or a hole or notch in the media to determine the length of the label or ticket. The loca tor is a device desi gned to m a k e m e d ia s e n sor position ing easie r and m ore accu rate.

To adjust th e upper media sensor to accommodate non - Br a d y-bran d media, ref er to Figure 7. 2 and follo w t hese steps. 1 . Remove the ribbon and l ocate the Upper Me dia Sensor. 2 . Loos e n the P hillips h e ad scre w. 3. Slide the upper sensor a long the slot to the de sired position.
To ad just the lowe r media sensor, fo llow th e s e steps. 1 . Locat e the lower media senso r assem bly ( a sp ring c lip ho lding a sma ll printe d-circui t board) u nder the rea r idler roll er. 2 . Positi on the se nsor so th at the two bra ss-color ed infra red emit- ters are under the uppe r sensor by sl iding it in it s slot.
Note : This adjustm ent is in itiall y set during final pri nter calibr ation. Under normal circums tances, further adjust ments shoul d not be necessar y. The exce p tion to this mig ht be the use of med ia with exce p tion al ly thi ck o r thin backing, which could requ ire re-adjustm ent of the Senso r Sensi tivi ty.
