8 Use the included power cable t o connect to a surge protector or outlet. Note: Disconnecting the AC cable from the T eraStation, even if it is not pow ered on, may cause the T eraStation's time to become incorrect. 12 Po wer Status LED The LED glows g reen when the power cable is c onnected.
9 2 Right-click on your T eraStation's icon and select Settings . On the Mac, select the T eraStation's icon while holding down the contr ol key , then select Settings . 3 Click Easy Admin . 4 Click Change Passw ord . 5 If this screen is displayed , enter the current passw ord and click OK .

11 Chapter 2 C onfigura tion Configure and manage y our T eraStation using the Settings inter face, accessible fr om a browser windo w . Open the interface using the procedure below or type the T eraSta tion's IP address in the URL field of your br owser .
12 Notes: • If the time - out period is set to "10 minutes" , you will be logged out of Settings after 10 minutes of inactivit y . • Click Secure Connection to log in with an encrypted connection.
13 2 Right-click on your T eraStation's icon and choose Settings . F or Mac OS, click the T eraStation icon while holding down the contr ol key , then select Settings . 3 Click Easy Admin . 4 The Easy Admin scr een will open. Notes: • If you click any buttons , y ou will need to enter a username and passwor d.
14 Chapter 3 S haring F iles A dding Shared F olders 1 In Settings, click File Sharing . 2 Click to the right of "F older Setup" . 3 Click Create F older . 4 Y ou can create up to 20 shared f olders at a time. Enter a f older name and description (optional), then click Create F older .
15 If you want to configur e any shared f olders, click Edit and configur e desired settings. Click OK when finished . 5 Click OK when the following message is displa yed. Notes: • Names may contain up to 27 alphanumeric characters , hyphens (-), and underscor es (_).
16 Note: Y ou can prevent guests and other users from emptying the trash by na vigating to F ile Sharing - SMB - Recycle Bin Permissions and selecting " Administrator only" . Read-only Shares By default, new shares are set with r ead & write access, but y ou may change the attribute to Read Only in Attribute .

The number of users y ou specified are created . Notes: • The username for sequential users ma y contain up to 24 alphanumeric characters, h yphens (-), and underscores (_).
20 4 Configure the desir ed group settings and click OK when finished . Notes: • Group names may con tain up to 20 alphanumeric characters, hyphens (-), undersc ores (_), and periods (.). Do not use a symbol other than an underscore (_) as the first character .
21 Local Users/Gr oups 1 In Settings, click File Sharing . 2 Click to the right of "F older Setup" . 3 Click the shared folder tha t you want to set acc ess restrictions for . 4 Click the Acc ess Restrictions tab. 5 Enable " Access Restrictions" .
22 7 Click OK . Notes: • The example above shows ac cess restriction by user . T o restrict access by group , click the L ocal Gr oups tab and select group permissions. • I f both read-only and read & write permissions are giv en to a user , the user will have read-only access.
23 - An incomplete file may be c opied and the file can no longer be deleted. If this happens, restart the T eraStation, delete the file, and perform the copy operation again. • After a drive is formatted, the "% Used" and " Amount Used" in Settings will not be 0.

25 NT Domain In an NT domain environment, the T eraStation uses account inf ormation from the NT domain server to set access restrictions for files and folders on the T eraStation. There's no need t o per form individual account management f or the T eraStation.
26 9 Click a shared folder f or which you want t o set access restrictions. 10 Click the Access Restrictions tab . 11 Enable " Access Restrictions" . 12 Select the level of access for "Domain Users" or "Domain Groups" y ou added.
27 Chapter 4 Managing St or age RAID Arra y s T eraStations support many types of RAID. The RAID array type to use depends on how many drives ar e installed in your T eraStation. T eraStation Default RAID Mode TS1400D TS1400R RAID 5 TS1200D RAID 1 Notes: • If you change the RAID mode, all data on the array is delet ed.
28 RAID 1 Combines 2 drives int o a mirrored array . The available space in the arra y is the capacity of a single drive. Identical data is written to each drive . If a drive is damaged, data can be reco vered b y replacing the damaged drive. A s long as one drive in the array remains undamaged , all data in the array can be r ecover ed.
29 Changing RAID Mode T o change the RAID mode, first put the drives in JBOD . 1 In Settings, click Drives . 2 Click to the right of "RAID" . 3 Click the array to delete . Note: If the "RAID Mode" field is blank , the array is already in JBOD .
30 RMM (RAID Mode M anager) With RMM, y ou can create or expand a RAID array without er asing the data on the drives. Befor e using RMM, make sure all inserted internal drives are the same size in to the slots. Changing from JBOD to RAID 1 Hard drives that ar en't in a RAID ar ray show "Normal" .
31 9 The "Confirm Opera tion" screen will open. Enter the c onfirmation number , then click OK . Adding a Driv e to an Existing RAID Arra y (F or TS1400D and TS1400R Models) Y ou can add a dr ive to a RAID 1 or RAID 5 array . Drives that can be added to the RAID array show "Normal" .
32 RAID S canning A RAID scan checks your RAID array for bad sectors and automa tically repairs them if any ar e found. RAID 1, RAID 10, RAID 5, and RAID 6 arrays are supported. F or best results , run RAID scans regularly . 1 In Settings, click Drives .
33 to connect only one bus-power ed drive at a time. If there is insufficient bus po wer for y our USB drive, connect its AC adapter . Note that only the first par tition of a connected USB hard drive is mounted . Additional partitions are not recogniz ed.
34 5 When the follo wing message is displayed, it is saf e to unplug the drive . Note: T o remount the drive, unplug it and then plug it back in. Checking Drives A disk check tests the data on a drive in the T eraStation or connected via USB for integrity .
35 F orma tting Drives Note: Under some circumstances , data deleted when a drive is f ormatted can be reco vered. T o ensure that data is "gone for ever" , a format might not be sufficient. See the "Erase Data on the T eraStation Completely" section below .
36 Encr ypting Drives Internal drives (and arrays) can be encrypted with 128-bit AES during formatting. Encrypted drives and arrays ar e then readable only from that specific T eraStation. T o unencr ypt a drive or array , uncheck "Encryption" and format it again.
37 Notes: • When using quotas, disable the r ecycle bin or empty the trash folder often. The limited space includes the space used for trash. • Quotas apply per drive or per array . I f a quota is set to 1 GB, each array or driv e can use a maximum of 1 GB.
38 5 Click Close . 6 Click to the right of "Users" . 7 Select the user who will inherit the group quota settings. 8 Change the user's primar y group to the g roup with the quota, then click OK . 9 Click OK . Hard Driv e Replacemen t If a drive fails, NAS Navigator2 and Settings will sho w an error message.

42 Note: If your T eraStation is on and the red status LEDs are lit , the hard drives are still on. Do not unplug or remov e them. 2 Pull out the failed drive and r emove it fr om the T eraStation. 3 Inser t the new drive into the empty slot. Slide the drive in with the locking mechanism open.
43 3 When the replacement har d drive is recog nized, an I31 message will be display ed in NAS Navigator2. 4 Hold down the function button on the front of the T eraStation for 3 seconds. TS1200D TS1400D TS1400R 5 The T eraStation will start rebuilding the RAID array .

Cr eate a shared f older on the drive befor e use. Using RAID 0 Drives in a RAID 0 array do not automatically turn off in the ev ent of a malfunction.
45 Chapter 5 Remot e A c cess W ebAcc ess W ebAccess is a software pr ogram for ac cessing the files in the shared folder of y our T eraStation from your comput er or mobile devices through the Internet.
46 4 Configure the desir ed settings, then click OK . • Y ou may use the default BuffaloNAS.com registration, or disable to use a diff erent DNS server . • Choose a "BuffaloNAS.com name" and "BuffaloNAS.com key" for y our W ebAc cess account.

49 Chapter 6 Backup Back Up from the T eraSta tion Y ou can back up T eraStation folders to: • A different folder on the T eraStation • Another LinkStation on the network • Another T eraStation on the network Y ou can also configure backup jobs from Easy Admin.
50 3 Click List of LinkStations and T eraStations . 4 Click Add under "O ff-subnet Devices" , enter the IP address of the target LinkStation or T eraStation, and click Close . If your setup meets the requirements belo w , you don't have to c onfigure these settings: • The source and target T eraStations are on the same network.
51 2 Click to the right of "Backup" . 3 Click Create New Job . Note: Up to 8 backup jobs can be configured . 4 Select backup settings such as date and time to run. The follo wing types of backup jobs may be selected: T ype F iles included Normal backup All files in the source will be backed up t o the destination.
52 T ype F iles included Management backup Each time a backup is executed , management information is stor ed, and only files that have changed ar e copied or deleted.
53 Replication Replication copies all data from a shar e to a share on a diff erent T eraSta tion. This is an easy way t o configure a reliable system t o provide data pr otection in the event your main T eraStation fails. T o configure replication, connect an Ethernet cable to the LAN port of each T eraStation and follo w the steps below .
54 6 Select the shared folder that will be the replication sour ce, then click OK . 7 Click Browse under "Replication T arget" . 8 Select the shared folder that will be the replication tar get, then click OK . 9 Click OK . 10 Click Ye s . Notes: • During setup, y ou may choose to encrypt and/or compress replication data.
55 • If a network problem causes a replication error , the "Remaining Job(s)" tab may show "0" even though replication did not finish. Click Resync to r ecover fr om the replication error . All files from the sourc e folder will be copied to the target f older .
56 12 Click Browse . 13 Select the shared folder that you set in the previous st ep, then click OK . 14 Click OK . 15 Click OK . 16 Move the T ime Machine switch to the position to enable Time Machine.

Note: If access restrictions are not configur ed on the target share, log in with the administr ator account . The default username and password f or the administrator accoun t are "admin" and "passwor d" .
59 1 In Settings, click Backup . 2 Move the Direct Cop y switch to the position to enable Direct Copy . 3 Connect the USB device. When it mounts (about 10 seconds), the function LED will light up. Note: Devices that don't trigger the function LED to light up are not suppor ted.
60 Chapter 7 Multimedia DLNA DLNA is a set of guidelines for sharing digital media. The T eraStation includes a DLNA server compliant with the DLNA guidelines. The movies, photos, and music sa ved on this product can be played back on DLNA-compliant T V s, stereo equipment, game c onsoles, and other devices within the network.
61 10 Click Edit . 11 Select an inter val for DLNA server database updates and click OK . 12 Click OK . Playing F iles T o play back conten t from a DLNA-compatible device: 1 Connect the DLNA-compatible device to the same network as the T eraStation and turn it on.
62 3 Click DLNA Client Acc ess Permissions . 4 A list of the MAC addr esses, IP addresses , and device names of the DLNA-compatible devices connected to the same network as the T eraStation is displayed. If your device is not list ed, click Refresh Database .
63 1 In Settings, click Ser vices . 2 Click to the right of "DLNA Ser ver" . 3 Click DLNA Client Acc ess Permissions . 4 Uncheck the devices you do not want t o allow to play media and click OK . 5 Click Restar t to apply changes. Suppor ted File T yp es The T eraStation supports DLNA streaming of files with the extensions below .
64 2 Click to the right of "iT unes S er ver" . 3 Click Edit . 4 Click Browse . 5 Select the shared folder that you wan t to make available to iT unes, then click OK . 6 Click OK , then OK again. 7 Move the iT unes ser ver switch to the position.
65 Notes: • Use compatibility mode to use the download manager with Windows 8.1 and W indows 8. • The download manager doesn't work with Internet Explorer 11. T o open the download manager , use a differen t browser or an earlier version of Internet Explor er .
66 7 Move the BitT orrent switch to the position to enable BitT orrent. 8 Click to the right of "BitT or rent" . 9 Click Open Download Manager . The default username is "admin" and the default passwor d is blank (no password). 10 The download manager will open.
67 Chapter 8 A dvanced F eatures Email Notification Y our T eraStation can send you email reports daily , or when settings are changed or an error oc curs.
68 5 Enter your mail server settings and choose what events will trigger notification. Click OK t o send a test email. Sleep Mode T o save energy , you can specify times to put the T eraStation into sleep (standby) mode , where the hard drive and LEDs are turned off .
69 4 Specify the timer interval, wake-up time, and time to go into sleep mode, then click OK . Notes: • Up to three timers can be set. • The time to enter sleep mode can be set fr om 0:00 am to 3:45 of the next day . The time to wake fr om sleep mode can be set from 0:00 to 23:45.
70 On days other than Wednesday , normal operation begins at 9:00 and the unit goes into sleep mode at 18:00. On W ednesday , nor mal operation begins at 7:30 and the unit goes int o sleep mode at 22:00. • T o wake the T eraStation from sleep mode manually , press the po wer button.
71 C onnec ting a Prin ter Y ou can connec t a printer to the USB port on the T eraStation. Notes: • Only one USB printer can be connected to the T eraSta tion. • Bidirectional communication is not supported i.e., remaining ink quantities and other printer sta tus information is not display ed.
72 Offline Files The "offline files" f eature that is included with man y versions of Windo ws can be used with files on the T eraStation. Y ou will be able to work on files stored on the T eraStation even when your PC is disconnected fr om the network.
73 A cc essing from an NFS Clien t Note: (US purchasers only) Buffalo 's customer support will help configure the NFS settings on your T eraStation, and will support VMware and Windows clients but will not pro vide suppor t for configuring y our Linux or other UNIX clients.
74 Note: T o delete a client, check the hostname and click Delete Client . 11 Enter the IP address and hostname of the NFS client, then click OK . 12 Click Close . 13 Enter the mount command to ac cess the shared folder fr om the NFS client. The mount command depends on y our operating system.
75 • T o restrict access to a NFS share f or specific clients, naviga te to F ile Sharing - NFS - NFS Rules and click Add Rule . Choose the folder to r estrict access to, and en ter the clients that will hav e restricted access in the "Hosts" field.
76 Notes: • Place the SSL key files (server .key, server .cr t) directly below the C root drive. The SSL key may not be able to be updated if it is placed in f olders or paths that contain multi-byt e characters. • Use the provided passw ord for the SSL key .

A MySQL database may be installed and linked with the web ser ver . 1 In Settings, click Ser vices 2 Move the MySQL server switch to the position to enable the MySQL ser ver .
78 6 Choose a shared folder f or the MySQL ser ver , then click OK . 7 Choose an external por t, then click OK . Saving and Applying Settings The T eraStation's settings can be saved t o a USB memor y device and restor ed to another T eraStation.
79 4 F rom "T arget USB drive" , select the USB memor y device that is connected to the USB 2.0 port of the T eraStation. 5 Select "Save current configuration t o a USB drive" . Click Execute . 6 The "Confirm Opera tion" screen will open.

84 Notes: • The internal clocks of the T eraStation and other devices on your network may run at slightly diff erent speeds. Over a long period of time your network devices may show somewhat diff erent times , which can cause network problems. If clocks on your network vary by more than 5 minutes it ma y cause unexpected behavior .
85 4 Select the desired Ethernet frame size and click OK . Note: Make sure the T eraSta tion's Ethernet frame size is smaller than the hub or rout er's.

87 Chapter 9 Utilities NAS Naviga tor2 f or W indow s NAS Navigator2 is a utility that makes it easy to displa y Settings, change the T eraStation's IP address, or check its hard drive . If you installed the T eraStation with the T eraNavigator CD , NAS Navigator2 was installed automatically .
88 Name Description Menu Map Share * Assigns the T eraStation's shared folder as a network drive . Disconnect Share * Unmaps the network drive. Map All Remote Shares to Drive L etters Assigns all the T eraStation's shared folders as network drives.
89 Browse Shar es Shows a list of shared f olders on the selected NAS device. Exit Exits NAS Navigator2. *"I'm here" is available on TS1400D and TS1400R models. When clicked, the T eraStation will beep and its power LED will blink red. The follo wing tasks may be per formed from the T eraStation's properties page.
90 3 An icon for the mapped shar e will appear in Computer or My Comput er . Y ou can use this network drive just like any other hard driv e. Changing the IP A ddress 1 Double -click the icon to start NAS Navigator2. 2 Right-click on your T eraStation's icon and choose P roperties - IP Address .

95 Chapter 10 A ppendix When the LED Blinks Red P ow er or Error LED If there is an error , the power LED on TS1200D and TS1400D models, or the error LED on TS1400R models will blink. For TS1200D models, the following blink patt erns will give the error code .
96 Drive Sta tus LED If an error occurs on a drive, its c orresponding LED will light up or blink. Refer to the "Hard Drive Replacemen t" section in chapter 4 and replace the failed drive with a new drive .
