1 CHAPTER 1 General Information This chapter gives b ackground infor- mation on the PCA-6186. It th en shows you how to configure the card to match your application an d prepare it for installation in to your PC.
PCA-6186 User’s Manual 2 Chapter 1 Hardware Configuration 1.1 Introduction Advantech's PCA-6186 full-si ze CPU card is designed with Intel 845G chipset and supports sock et 478 Pentium 4/Celeron processor (FSB 400/ 533MHz) up to 2.4GHz and abov e.
3 1.2 Features 1. Fan status monitoring and alarm: T o prevent system overheating and damage, the CPU fan can be monitored for speed and failure. The fan is set for its normal RPM range and alarm thresholds.

PCA-6186 User’s Manual 12 1.8 System Memory The top-left edge of t he PCA-6186 contains two sockets for 184 -pin dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs). Bo th two sockets use 3.3 V unbuf- fered synchronous DRAMs (DDR SDRAM). DIMMs are available in capacities of 64, 1 28, 256, 512 MB, or 1 GB.

PCA-6186 User’s Manual 16 Chapter 2 Connecting Peripherals 2.1 Introduction Y ou can access most of the connectors fr om the top of the board while it is installed in the chassis. If you have a number of cards installed or have a packed chasis, you may need to pa rtially remove the card to make all the connections.
17 Chapter 2 2.3 Floppy Drive Connector (CN3) Y ou can attach up to two floppy disk dri ves to the PCA-6186's onboard controller . Y ou can use 3.5" (720 KB, 1.44 MB ) drives. The card comes with a 34-pin daisy- chain drive connector cable. On one end of the cable is a 34-pin flat-cable connector .

19 Chapter 2 2.7 10/100Base-T Ethernet Connectors (CN8 and CN34) The PCA-6186 is equ ipped with one or two high-perfo rmance 32-bit PCI-bus Ethernet interfaces, which are fully compliant with IEEE 802.3/u 10/100 Mbps CSMA/C D standards. Also, PCA-6 186 provides the o ption of supporting single or dual 10/10/1 000 Mbps Ethernet LANs.
PCA-6186 User’s Manual 20 2.9 PS/2 Keyboard and Mouse Connectors (CN1 1 and CN33) T wo 6-pin mini-DIN connectors (CN11 and CN33) on the card mounting bracket provide connection to a PS/2 keyboard and a PS/2 mouse, respec- tively .
21 Chapter 2 2.1 1 Infrared (IR) Connector (CN13) This connector suppo rts the optional wireless infrared transmitting and receiving module. This mo dule mounts on the system case. Y ou must configure the setting through the BIO S setup (see Chapter 3).

This type of inform ation is stored in battery-backed memory (CMOS RAM) so that it retains th e setup information when th e power is turned o ff.
29 Chapter 3 3.3 Standard CMOS Setup Choose the “Standard CMOS Features” option from the “Initial Setup Screen” menu, and the screen below will be displayed. This menu allows users to configure system components such as dat e, time, hard disk driv e, floppy drive, display , and memory .
PCA-6186 User’s Manual 30 3.4 Advanced BIOS Features The “Advanced BIOS Features” scr een appears when choosing the “Advanced BIOS Features” item from th e “Initial Setup Screen” menu. It allows the user to configure the PC A-6186 according to his particular requirements.

This memory must be map ped into the memo ry space below 16MB. The Choice: 15M-16M, Disabled. 3.5.5 RAS# Precharge Time This controls the idle clocks after issuing a precharge command to DRAM.

When a monitored reading exceeds safe limits, a warning mes- sage will be displayed and an error b eep tone will activate to attract your attention.

93 Appendix A Appendix A Programming the W atchdog T imer The PCA-6186 is equipp ed with a watchdog timer that resets the CPU or generates an interrupt if processing comes to a standstill for any reason . This feature ensures sy stem reliability in industrial standalone or unman ned environments.
