11 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in » mode, and then how to view and erase the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and view movies and transfer images to a computer.

18 Before you us e a new memory card or one that has be en formatted in o ther devices, y ou should for mat the card with this camera . Formattin g (initializ ing) a memory car d erases all d ata on the memory card. As you canno t retrieve the erased dat a, exercise a dequate caut ion before formatting the memory card.

20 Since the ca mera can determi ne the subje ct and shooting conditions, you can let it automatic ally select the best se ttings for the scene and jus t shoot. The camera can a lso detect an d focus on fa ces, setting the color an d brightness to optimal le vels.
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 21 X When the came ra focuses, it will beep twice and AF fram es will ap pear wher e the camera focuse d. Several AF frames will appear wh en the camera focuse s on more than one point. Shoot. z Press the s hutter button fully to sho ot.
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 22 • What if the image comes out dark even if the flash fired when shooting? The subject is too far away for the flash to reach. The effective flash range is approximately 30 cm – 3.0 m (12 in. – 9.8 ft.) at maximum wide angle ( j ), and approximately 30 cm – 2.

Indicator 39 Screen Display in Dark Shooting Conditions The display automatical ly brighten s when shootin g in dark condi tions, allowing y ou to chec k the compo sition (Nig ht Display function). Zooming in More Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) 50 Digital Tele-Converter The focal lengt h of the lens can be inc reased by approx imately 1.4x or approxim ately 2.3x. Thi s enables a fas ter shutte r speed and less chance of camera shak e than the zoom (in cluding dig ital zoom) us ed by itself at t he same zoom factor.

Changing the AF Frame Mode 74 Center The AF fram e is locked to the cente r. This is e ffective for focusing on a specific poin t. Changing th e Composition w ith the Focus Lock While you keep the shutter button presse d halfway, the f ocus and exposu re are locked.
75 If you pr ess the shutt er button hal fway, the AF frame will magnify and you can check the fo cus. Choose [AF-Poi nt Zoom]. z Press the n button to choose [AF- Point Zoom] fr om the 4 tab, t hen press the qr buttons to cho ose [On]. Check the focus.
76 The focus can be locke d. After loc king the focu s, the foca l distance wi ll not change ev en when you release yo ur finger fr om the shutt er button. Lock the focus. z Keep the shutt er button pr essed halfwa y and press the q button. X The focus loc ks and % appears on the screen.
