About this Manual 12 69 Setting the Time Code The camcorder g enerates a times code signal and embeds it in your recordings. 2 21 Preparations Pr eparing the Power Supply Y ou can power the camcor der using a battery pack or dir ectly using the compact power adapter . If you connect the compact power adapter to the camcor der while a battery pack is attached, the c amcorder will dr aw power fro m the power outlet.
Preparing the Power Supply 22 • Charged battery packs continue to di scharge naturally . Therefor e, charge the m on the day of use, or the da y before, to ensur e a full charge. • We reco mmend that you prepar e battery packs to last 2 to 3 times longer than you think you m ight need.
23 Preparing the Power Supply Checking the Remaining Battery Charge When the camcor der is turn ed on, you can check the rema ining battery charge by l ookin g at any recor ding/ playback scr een or the [Battery/Hour M eter] status screen ( A 138 ).

25 Date, Time and Language Settings Date, Time and Language Settings Setti ng the Dat e and Time Y ou will need to set the date and t ime of the camcorder be fore you can start using it.

27 Using the Menus Using the Menus In mode, many of the camcor der’ s functions can be adjusted fr om the menu for general settings, which opens after pr essing the MENU button. Y ou can also re gister frequently used menu settings in a customized submenu (My Menu) for easy acce ss.

Furthermore, if you set an assignable button to [My Menu] ( A 85), you can pr ess the button to access your register ed menu settings even faster and mor e easily .

Preparing the Camcorde r 30 NOTES • T urning on the image stabiliza tion function of an EF lens may re duce the effec tive usage time of the battery pack. When image stabilization i s no t necessary , for example if the cam corder is fi xed to a tripod, it is recom mended to turn it off.

33 Preparing the Camcorde r Using the LCD Panel 1 Pull the LCD panel 90° up. 2 Rotate the LCD panel 180° le ft. 3 Push down the LCD panel to adjust it to the desired ang le of view . NOTES • Y ou can set the LCD scr een to black & white ( A 33).
Preparing the Camcorde r 34 • About the LCD a nd viewfinder scr eens: The scr eens are pr oduced using extr emely high-prec ision manufacturing techniques, with more th an 99.99 % of the pixels o perating to specif ication. Less than 0.01% o f the pixels may o ccasionally misfir e or appear as black , red, blue or green dots.
35 Preparing the Camcorde r Attachi ng the Grip Un it The grip unit can be attached in any of 24 positions (at 15º intervals) to give you a conven ient grip angl e for high- and low-ang le shooting. 1 Set the Q switch to OFF . 2 Unscrew the thumb r est and remov e it from the camcord er .
Preparing the Camcorde r 36 Removing and Atta ching the T erminal Covers Y ou can remove the plastic co vers of the follow ing terminals to access them mor e readily . Removing the T erminal Covers Open the terminal c over and gently pu ll it straight out.
37 Preparing the Camcorde r NOTES • Depending on the ambient tempera ture and other shooting conditions, the coo ling fan may n ot turn off even if you set [Fan] to [Automatic].
Usi ng a n SD Ca rd 38 Usi ng an SD C ar d SD Cards Compatible for Use with the Camcorder Y ou can use the following types of commer cially availabl e Secure Digital (SD) car ds with this camcor der . The camcorder is equipped with two SD car d slots.
39 Using an SD Card Inserting and Removing an SD Car d Y ou can insert an SD card into SD car d slot A or slot B. If you have two SD cards, yo u can use both slots. 1 T ur n off the c amcorder . 2 Lift t he LCD panel upw ar ds and open t he SD ca rd compar tment cove r .
Usi ng a n SD Ca rd 40 NOTES • T o remove the SD car d: Push the SD car d once t o r elease it. When th e SD card springs out, pull it all the way out. • If yo u se t th e [ w Other Functions] > [Media Access LED] fu nction to [Off], the access indicators will no t illuminate.
41 Using an SD Card Switching Between the SD Car d Slots The camcor der features two SD card slots, SD car d slot A and SD car d slot B. If both slots co ntain an SD card, y ou can switch between them as necessary . Press the SLOT SELECT button. • The access indicator of the selected SD card slot will ill uminate in gr een.
Usi ng a n SD Ca rd 42 Checking the Available Recor ding Time When the camcorder is in mode, the display on th e u pper left of the scr een in dicates which SD car d slot is in use and the available r ecord ing time (in minutes*) that remains on each SD card.
43 Adjusting the Black Balance Adjusting the Black Balance Y ou can have the camcorder adjust the black balanc e automatically when ambient temperature changes considerably or if there i s a noticeable change in a true bla ck video signal. 1 O pen the [AB B] screen.

3 45 Recording Recor ding Video This section explains the r ecording basic s. Bef or e you begi n re cording, make a test r ecording f irst to check if the camcor der operates corr ectly . Record for approximately 1 5 minutes at the default bit rate, 24 Mbps (LPCM) ( A 50).
Recordin g Video 46 2 P r ess the ST ART/STOP button to begin r ecor ding. • Recording starts. The rear and fron t tally lamps illum inate and the recor ding indic ator [ Ü REC] appears at the top o f the screen.
47 Recording V ideo Locking the Co ntrols in Recording Mode Once in mode, y ou can set the Q switch to C (key lock) to lock all the physical controls (bu ttons and swi tches) on the camcor der , save for the ST ART/STOP button. This is useful in pr eventing settings from being changed due to inadvertently pressing one of the buttons.

49 Recording V ideo CINEMA Preset Y ou can easily set the camcor der to use a number o f preset pictur e- related settings especially designed with pr ofessional cinematogr aphy and motion picture pr oduction in mi nd.
Video Configuration: S ystem Frequency, Bit Rate and Frame Rate 50 Video Configuration: System Frequenc y , Bit Rate and Frame Rate Before you r ecord, select the bit rate and frame rate that best ma tch your creative needs. The options available will depend on the system fr equency selected: 59.
51 Video Confi guration: System Freque ncy, Bit Rate and Frame Rate Available bit rate and f rame rat e settings 1 The cam cor der uses a vari able bi t rate (VB R). 2 Shooti ng at 30 fram es per secon d, progr essi ve; re corde d as 60i. 3 Shooti ng at 24 fram es per secon d, progr essi ve; re corde d as 60i.
Changing Main C amera Functions with the Joystick 52 Changing Main Camera Functions with the Joystick Y ou can adjust three main camera f unctions – shutter speed, white balance and I SO speed/gain– u sing only the joystick. This section will explain the basic operation for changing a value.
53 Shutter Speed Shutter Speed Set the shutter speed based on the r ecording conditions. For example, yo u may want to set sl ower shutter speeds in darker e nvironments. The cam corder offers the follo wing 5 modes. [Speed]: Allows you to set the shutter speed (in fractions of a second).
Shutter Sp eed 54 Changing the Shutter Mode 1 Open the shutter [M ode] submenu. [ ~ Camera S etup] > [Shutter] > [Mode] 2 Select the desir ed mode and then press the jo ystick. • If you selected [Speed] (the default valu e), you can continue the procedur e to select the incr ement scale to use when adjustin g the shutter speed.
55 Shutter Speed NOTES • Closing down the aperture when r eco rdin g under bright co nditions may cause the pictur e to appear soft or ou t of focus. T o avoid the loss of sharpness due to diff rac tion, use a faster shutter speed, a denser ND filter ( A 58) or open up the apertur e.
ISO Spee d/Ga in 56 ISO Speed/Gain Depending on the shooting conditio ns you may want to ad just the brightness of the image. Y ou can do so by changing the ISO speed or gain value to adjust the sensitivity of the sensor .
57 ISO Speed/ Gain Adjusting the ISO/Gain V alue 1 Press the I SO/GAIN button. • The curr ent ISO/gain va lue will be hig hlighted in oran ge. 2 Push the joystick up/down to select the desired ISO sp eed or gain value an d then p re ss the j oystick .
ND Filter 58 ND F ilt er Using the ND filters allows you keep the apertur e within an appropriate range when r ecording i n brig ht surroundings*. * Closi ng down the aper ture when recording under b right c onditio ns may cause the pictur e to appear soft or out of focus.
59 Adjusting the Aperture Adjusting the Apertur e Y ou can affect the brig htness of your reco rdings or ch ange the depth of field by adjusting the ape rture. For example, use a sm all aperture value for a shallow depth of field that isolates the subject in focus and nicely blurs the backgr ound.
Adjusting the Aperture 60 Mom entary A utomatic Apertu re - Pu sh Auto Iris Press the PUSH AUTO IRIS button to ha ve the camcor der automatically adjust the aperture (f/stop) for an optimal exposur e. Hold down the PUSH AUTO IRIS button. • The camcorder will automatically adju st the aperture to obtain optimal exposure.
61 Adjusting the Aperture Ligh t Meter ing Mode Select the light meterin g mode to match the r ecording co nditions. Using the appr opriate setting will e nsure that the camcor der obtains the most suit able exposur e level when the push au to iris function is used.
White Balance 62 Whit e B ala nce The camcor der uses an electronic whit e balance pr ocess to calibrate the pictur e and ensure accurate c olors under diff erent lighting conditions.
63 White Balance Preset White Balance Settings 1 Press the WB button. • The white balance mode ic on wi ll be hig hlighted in oran ge. • Y ou can also select the w hite balance mode icon u sing only the jo ystick ( A 52 ). 2 Push the joystick up/down to select the ¼ or É ico n and then press the j oystick.
Adjusting the Focus 64 Adjusting the Focus The camcor der off ers two ways to focus. Manual focus: T urn the foc us ring on the attached lens to adjust the focus. The cam cor der of fers several focus assistance functions to help you focus mo re accurately when using the manual focus.
65 Adjusting the Focus • W ith some EF lenses, the camcorder may take longer to focus automatically or may not be able to focus corr ectly . Visit your local Canon Web si te for the latest information. • One-shot AF m ay not work well on the following subj ects or in the following cases.
Adjusting the Focus 66 Using the Focus Assis tance Functions In order to focus mor e accurately , you can use two focus assistance functions – peakin g, which cr eates a clearer contrast by emphasizing the outlines of the subject, and magnif ication, which enlarges the image on the screen.
67 Onscreen Ma rkers and Ze bra Patt erns Onscr een M arkers and Ze bra Patterns Using onscreen mar kers allows you to make sure your su bject is co rrectly fr amed an d is within the appr opriate safe area. The zebra patterns help you identify areas that ar e over exposed.
Onscreen Ma rkers and Ze bra Patt erns 68 NOTES • If you set an assignable button to [Mar kers] ( A 85), you can pr ess the button to turn the onscreen marker s on and off. Displaying Zeb ra Patterns The camcor der has a zebra pattern feature tha t shows black and white diagonal stripes over areas that ar e over exposed.
69 Setting the Time Code Setting the Time Code The camcor der generates a time code signal and embeds it in your recor dings. Y ou can output the ti me code along w ith video ou tput fr om the HDMI OUT te rminal ( A 134). For 59.94 Hz r ecordings, you can also se lect between a dr op frame and non-dr op frame time code.

71 Setting the Time Code NOTES • When the frame rate is set to 24P , the frames value in th e time code r uns from 0 to 23. When the fram e rate is set to 50i or PF25, it runs fr om 0 to 24. With other fram e rates, it ru ns fro m 0 to 29. • When pre-r ecording m ode is activated, [Fr ee R un] is set automatically and cannot be changed.
Setting the Us er Bit 72 Setting the User Bit The user bit display can be selected from the date or the time of recor ding, or an identification code consisting of 8 characters in the hexadecimal system. T here ar e sixteen possible characte rs: the numbers 0 to 9 and the letters A to F .
73 Record ing A udio Recor ding Audio Y ou can record audio using the built-i n stereo micr ophone*, commerc ially available micr ophones (XLR terminal*, MIC terminal) or line inpu t (XLR terminal*). Using the XLR terminals, you can select th e audio input independently for channel 1 and channel 2 .

79 Color Bars/A udio Reference Signal Color Bars/Audio Refere nce Signal Y ou can have the camcorder generate and r ecord color bars and a 1 kHz audio refe r ence signal and output them from the HDMI OUT terminal, A V OUT terminal and × (headphone) terminal (aud io r eference signal o nly).
Video Scopes 80 Video Scopes The camcor der can display a simplif ied waveform monitor or an edge monitor* to he lp you focus. The video scopes appear only on the LCD screen. They do not appear in the viewfinder o r on an external monitor . * The edge mo nitor look s at the focus of th e entire picture and disp lays the result s as a waveform .
81 Video Scope s Configur ing the Edge Monito r Using this video sco pe allows you to focus with mor e precisio n. Y ou can use the edge monitor along w ith th e other focus assistan ce functions ( A 66). The edge monitor featur es 2 modes. 1 Open t he [Edge Moni tor] subm enu.

83 Pre-recording Mod e Pre-recording M ode When pre- recor ding mode is activ ated, the camcorder starts r ecor ding contin uously into a tempora ry memory of approxim ately 3 seconds so when you press the ST ART/ST OP button, the clip will contain also approximately 3 seconds of video and audio recor ded before you pr essed the button.

4 85 Customization Assignable Buttons The camcor der conveniently features 15* buttons to which you can assign various functions. By assigning often- used functions, you can quickly access them with a single press of a button. Assignable button 7 is located on the grip unit, so its availability depends on the camcor der configuratio n used.

Cu stom P ictur e Set tings 88 Custom Pictur e Settings Y ou can preset a number of pictur e-related settings ( A 9 1). Y ou can change each individual setting for maximum contro l or use a more i ntuitive graphical interf ace to adjust the gamma cu rve and white balance shift ( A 96).
89 Custom Picture Settings Editing a Custom Picture File’ s Settin gs This pro cedure describes how to chan ge the custom pictur e settings in detail when you want maxim um control over the image.

Cu stom P ictur e Set tings 92 [Black ] Controls the black lev el and color cast of bla cks. [Master P edestal] The master pedesta l increases or decr eases the black level. Higher settings w ill make dark ar eas brighter but decrease co ntrast. This setting can be ad justed f rom -5 0 to 50.
93 Custom Picture Settings [Sharpness] Sets the sharpness of the ou tput and reco rding signal. [Level]: Sets the sharpness level. This setting c an be adjusted from -10 to 50. (Def ault: ±0) [H Detail Freq. ]: Sets the center frequency of horizo ntal sharpness.
Cu stom P ictur e Set tings 94 [Offset]: Adjusts the sharpness leve l of dark areas in th e image. Setting highe r values will lower the sharpness level. This setting can be adju sted fr om 0 to 50. (Default: 0 ) [Noise R eduction] Reduces the amount of noise that appear s in the image.
95 Custom Picture Settings [B-G]: The B-G matrix changes the tint of the pictur e along the yellow/ green and bl ue/magenta gradations. This setting can be adju sted from -50 to 50. (Defa ult: ±0) [White Balance] Adjusts the amount of white balance thr oughout the whole image.
