Exif Print This printer supports ExifPrint. Exif Print is a standard for enhancing the communication between digita l cameras and printers. By connecting to an Exif Print-compliant digital camera, the camera’ s image data at the time of s hooting is used and optimized, yielding extremely high quality prints.

2 Preface Intr od uction Thank you for purchasing a Canon Bubble Jet Printer . This Setup Guide uses the following symbols to indi ca te important information. Always observe the instructions indicated by these symbols. Instructions that, if ignored, c ould result in death or seriou s pe rsonal injury caused by incorrect operation of the equipment.
3 Setup Outline Follow the steps below to star t using the printer . Check the supplied mate rial. (see pa ge 4) Make sure the supplied items are inclu ded. Step 1 Set the printer . (see page 9) Place the printer and install the print head and the ink tanks.
4 Shipp ing Ma terials Check that all the following items ar e in the box. If anything is missing or is damaged, contact your Canon Service Representative. 5 Confirming Y our Connection Ty p e If your printer is connected to a network, it can be shared by multiple computers. This printer can be used over wirele ss or wi red LAN, as well as with USB connection. Connection type available for this printer are as follows.
6 Connecting o v er W ir eless LAN via an Ac cess P oint Y our computer communicates with the printer via an access point (the infrastructure mode). T o share the printer among multiple computers , connect them to the access point.
7 Connect ing o v er W ir ed LAN Y our comp uter communicates with the printer via an Ethernet network. T o set up the printer for use over wired LAN, see “First-time Setup for Use over W ired LAN” on page 31 after you finished setting the printer .
8 Using both USB Ca ble and W ir e less LAN Connect ions A computer communicates dir ectly with the printer with a USB cable, while other computers are connected over a wireless LAN (infras tructure mode). Y ou need to p erform setup both on the computer to be used with USB connection and o n the computers to b e used over wireless LAN.
9 Setting Up Installing the Print Head • Never attempt to plug the power cord into the power outlet or unplug the power cord when your hands are wet. • Never damage, modify , stretch, or excessively bend or twist the power cord. Do not place heavy objects on the power cord .
10 4 Open the Paper Output T ray and T op Cover , and then pull down the Inner Cover . Push the upper center ( ) of the Front Cover to open the Paper Output T ra y . 5 Remove the t ape. 6 Raise the Print Head Lock Lever . Do not tou ch internal parts other than the Print Head Lock Lever .
11 8 Remove the protective cap from the Print Head. 9 Place the Print Head in the holder . The print head will re st at a slight angle. 10 Lock the Print Head into place by lowering the lever . Do not touch the lever once the Print Head has been installed.
12 Insta lling the I nk T anks • For safety reasons, store ink tanks out of the reach of small children. • Do not drop or shake ink tanks as this may c ause the ink to leak out and st ain your clothes a nd hands. • Be sure to remove the clear film from the i nk tank in the exact order as shown in step 2.
13 5 Use the same procedure to install th e other ink t anks into their appropriate slots. Check the labels to make sure that each tank is in the correct position. 6 Put back the Inner Cover and close th e T op Cover . • Only install the ink tanks in the p ositions specified by the labels.
14 Loading Paper This section describes how to load paper in the Sheet Feeder . When performing the print head alignment, you need to load paper in the Sheet Feeder . 1 Pull out the Paper Support and Paper Output T ray completely as shown. Push the upper center ( ) of the Front Cover to open the Paper Output T ra y .
15 Confirming the Setup Procedure Along with the various types of connection this printer is capable o f (see “Confirming Y our Connection T ype” on page 5), necessary setup procedure also differs.
16 Setting Up the Printer and the Computer Bef or e Setup Make sure of the following before proceeding to installation. • Disable virus detection or any other resident pro grams. • Make sure you are connecte d to the Internet through your LAN. T o confirm this, see if you can browse the web.
17 For Windows • When using W i ndows XP , yo u must log on as the administrator . When using W indows 2000, you must log on as a member of the administrators group.
18 Confirming Settings of your Access Point When setting up the printer to be used over wireless LAN, the printer ’ s network settings are configured to match those of th e ac cess point.
19 Fir st-time Setup f o r Use o v er W ireless LAN When you are setting up the printer to be used ove r wireless LAN (infrastructure mo de) for the first time, the printer is se t up to be us ed over a network, as well a s the computer that use s it.
20 6 Read the Licen se Agreement carefully and click Ye s . 7 Select Set up the printer and the computer and click Next . 8 When the screen shown on the left appears, connect the printer with a USB cable.
21 9 T urn on the printer . If the printer is recognized, the next screen will appear automatically . If the connection is not recognized, click Help and follow its instructions. 10 Select Use printer with LAN connection and click Next . 11 Select Wireless LAN and click Next .
22 12 Setup automatically dete cts your access point. An access point is detected automatically and setup proceeds to the next step when • Setup detects an ac cess point with the same S SID as the access point currently connected to your computer , and t he acces s point is not using encryption.
23 If no access po ints were detected, or your target access point is not displayed If the An access point could not be detec ted message appears, click OK to display the Access Points dialog box. Click Update to perform detection again. If your access point is still not listed, take the following measures.
24 13 Setup automatically dete cts the printer . The iP4000R con nected with a USB cable is detected automatical ly . If the printer was not detected, the Set Printer IP Address dialog box appears. Click Connect to retry detection . If the printer is still not detected, take the following measures.
25 16 When the On-Screen Manual dialog box appears, click Next . Printer software installation is now complete. Setu p next proceeds to perf orm print head alignment. 17 When the Print Head Alignment dialog box appears, confirm that a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain p aper is loaded in the Sheet Feeder , and click Execute .
26 6 Double-click PIXMA iP4000R x xx.pkg . “x” represents a number . 7 Click Continu e . 8 Read the Licen se Agreement carefully and click Continue , then click Agree . 9 Select a destination to where you want to inst all the printer driver , and click Continue .
27 13 Click Rest art . When the computer restarts, BJ Network T ool will start up. If it does not start automatically , select Libr ary - Printers - Canon - BJ Printer - Utiliti es - BJ Network T ool . 14 Select Setup from the pop-up menu and iP4000R in Printer , then click OK .
28 16 Setup automatically dete cts your access point. An access point is detected automatically and setup proceeds to the next step when • Setup detect s an access point with the sam e network name (SSID) as the access point currently connected to your computer (when using AirPort Admin Utility version 3.
29 If no access po ints were detected, or your target access point is not displayed If the An access point could not be detec ted message appears, click OK to display the Access Points dialog box. 32 4 Follow the instructions disp layed on screen. When the screen shown on the left is displa yed, click Easy Inst all . 5 When the list of applications to inst all appears, verify the content s, click Inst all , then follow the instructions on the screen.
33 8 When the screen shown on t he left appears, connect the printer with a USB cable and connect the printer to the network devices such as hubs with an ethernet cable. 9 T urn on the printer . If the printer is recognized, the next screen will appear automatically .
34 11 Select Wired LAN and click Ne xt . 12 Setup automatically dete cts the printer . The iP4000R con nected with a USB cable is detected automatical ly . If the printer was not detected, the Set Printer IP Address dialog box appears. Click Connect to retry detection .
35 14 When the inst allation results are displaye d, click OK . If you are prompted to restart the computer , click Ye s and restart the computer . 15 When the On-Screen Manual dialog box appears, click Next . Printer software installation is now complete.

37 11 Enter the administra tor ’ s name and pas sword, and click OK . 12 A message asking for your co nfirmation to rest art your Mac appears on the screen. Read the messa ge, then click Continue Inst allation . Software in stallation will start. 13 Click Rest art .
38 16 Setup automatically dete cts the printer . The iP4000R con nected with a USB cable is detected automatical ly . If the printer was not detected, the Printer IP Addr ess Setup dialog box appears. Click Connect to retry detection. If your printer is still not detect ed, take the following measures.
39 20 Confirm that your printer is added to the list of printers. Printer drive r setup i s now com plete. 21 Install applications. In the Setup Sof tware & User ’s Guide CD-ROM , double-click CANO N_BJ and then double-click Application . Double-click the installe r in folder for each application you want to install.

44 11 Enter the administrator ’s name and password , and click OK . 12 A message asking for your confirmation to restart you r Mac appears on the screen. Read the message, then click Continue Inst allation . Software installation will start . 13 Click Rest art .
45 17 Confirm that your printer is added to the list of printers. The alphanumeric string after the p rinter name is its MAC address. Printer drive r setup i s now com plete. 18 Install applications. In the Setup Sof tware & User ’s Guide CD-ROM , double-click CANO N_BJ and then double-click Application .
46 1 T urn on the printer . 2 T urn on the computer . 3 Place the Setup Sof tware & User ’ s Guide CD-ROM in the CD-ROM dr ive. 4 Follow the instructions disp layed on screen. When the screen shown on the left is displa yed, click Easy Inst all .
47 6 Read the License Ag reement carefully and click Ye s . 7 Select Set up only the computer and click Next . 8 Select the printer in the Printers dialog box, and click Next . 9 Click Finish in the Setup Completion dialog box. T o change the port name, click Set Port Name .
48 10 When the inst allation results are displayed, click OK . If you are p rompted to resta rt the computer , click Ye s and restart the computer . 11 When the On-Screen Manual dialog box appears, click Next . Printer sof tware instal lation is now complete.
49 6 Click Continue . 7 Read the License Ag reement carefully and click Continue , then click Ag ree . 8 Select a destination volume to inst all the printer driver , and click Continue . 9 Click Inst all . When using Mac OS X v .10.2, go to step 1 1. 10 Enter the administra tor ’ s name and pas sword, and click OK .
50 12 Click Rest art . When the comp uter restarts , BJ Network T ool will start up. If it does not start automatically , select Library - Printers - Canon - BJ Printer - Utilitie s - BJ Ne twor k T ool . 13 Select Setup from the pop-up men u. 14 When a message appears notifying that no printer was detected, click OK .
51 20 Install applications. In the S etup Sof tware & User ’s Guide CD-ROM , double-click CANO N_BJ and then double-click Application . Double-click the installe r in folder for each application you want to install. Software setup is now complete.
52 4 Click the Maintenance t ab, and click Print Head Alignment . 5 Read the messa ge and click Print Head Alignment . It takes a bout 80 seconds to s tart printing. Do not open the T op Cover while printing. 6 If a message warning you not to perform other operations appears, click OK .
53 Aligning the Print Head - Macintosh 1 Double-click the hard disk icon where the printer driver was inst alled, the Applications folder , and then the Utilities folder . 2 Double-click the Printer Setup Utility icon. When using Mac OS X v .10.2, double-click the Print Cent er icon.
54 7 Ensure that the p attern on the left is printed. The Print Head is aligned automatically . The printer is now ready to use. If the pattern is not printed successfully , refer to “Eleven Flashes” in “T he Power Lamp Flashes Orange” of the User ’ s Guide .
55 Basic Operations • If you detect smoke, unusual smells or strange noises around the pr inter , immediately switch the printer off and always unplug th e printer . Contact your local Canon service representative. • T o avoid injury , never put your hand or finge rs inside the printer while it is printing.
56 4 Ensure that the proper lamp of t he paper source is lit. If not, press the Paper Feed Switch on the printer . 5 T o start printing, click Print . Printing will start in a few moments.
57 Basic Printing Settings For the best print quality , specify the minimum requirement settings in the Main ta b. T o get the best results, ensure you select th e type of media loaded in the pr inter when printing on paper other than plain paper .
58 Printing with M acintos h Adjusting the print settings according to your n eeds allows you to produce better quality prints. Printing 1 Open the Page Setup dialog box in your application. From the File menu, click Page Setup . Refer to the application’ s users manual for the actual procedures.
59 Page Setup From the Page Setup dialog box, specify the Paper Size settings. Basic Printing Settings For the best print quality , specify the minimum requ irement s ettings in the Print dialog box. Se lect Quality & Media from the pop-up menu to change the displa y of the dialog box.
60 Print Head Maintenance If Blurring Occurs or If a S pecific Color Does Not Print Perform Print Head Cleani ng to improve the print quality . Ensure that the printer is turned on and follow the instructions below . • W indows Open the Printe r Prop erties dialog box and click the Maintenance tab.
61 3 Install the new ink tank. Put back the Inner Cover and close the T op Cover when finished. For more details about ma intenance, refer to the User ’ s Guide .
62 Appendix Printin g Photog r a phs Dir ectl y fr om a Dig ital Camer a Connecting a digital still camer a or camcorder to the pr inter allows you to pr int recorded images directly without using a computer . This printer supports both PictBridge and Canon Bubble J et Direct.
63 3 Connect the digit al camera to the printer . (1) Connect the camera to the printer using the USB cable (for connection to a c omputer) supplied with the camera. (2) T urn on and set up the camera for direct printing. When the connection between the camera and printer has been established, the POWER lamp on the printer flashes once.
64 About Paper s ize and Paper ty pe T o change the paper size or paper type, operate the camera to selec t the PictBridge print setup mode and confirm or check the settings. T o print on Photo Paper Pro, select Fast Photo from Paper type on the display of the camera.
65 About Date pr int If “On” is sele cted, the shooting date recorded in Exi f image dat a is printed in t he lower -right corner of each photo. • This printer can handle only Exif/JPEG imag e data to produce photos using PictBridge. • Never disconne ct the USB cable during printing.

68 Initializing Network Settin gs T o initialize the network settings of the printer , follow these steps. 1 Make sure that the printer is conn ected to your computer with a USB cable.
