4 Read This First Please Read T est Shots Before y ou shoot images of subjects of impor tance to you, we strongly recommend that y ou shoot se veral trial images to confirm that you are operating the camera correctly .
5 W ARNINGS • Do not aim the camera directly into the sun or at other intense light sources which could damage your e y esight. • Do not tr igger the flash in close pro ximity to human or animal ey es. Exposure to the intense light produced by the flash ma y damage eyesight.
6 • T o avoid the risk of high-v oltage electrical shock, do not touch the flash portion of the camera if it has been damaged. Similar ly , ne ver touch internal por tions of the equipment that become e xposed as a result of damage. There is a r isk of high-v oltage electrical shock.
7 • Do not handle the power cord if your hands are w et. Handling it with wet hands ma y lead to electrical shock. When unplugging the cord, ensure that y ou hold the solid por tion of the plug. Pulling on the flexib le por tion of the cord may damage or e xpose the wire and insulation, creating the potential f or fires or electrical shocks.
8 • If using AA-size NiMH batteries, use only Canon AA-size NiMH batteries and charger recommended for use with these batteries. Use of another charger may cause batteries to ov erheat or def orm, posing risk of fire or electric shock.

17 Installing the Batteries The camera uses f our AA sized alkaline batteries supplied with the camera. Y ou ma y use optional nickel metal h ydride (NiMH) batteries. 1 Be sure that the camera power is off. 2 Slide the battery cover loc k, and push the battery cover slightly f orwar d.
18 4 Close the battery cover . When the camera’ s indicator flashes green, do not turn off the power or open the battery cov er . The camera is writing, reading, erasing or transmitting an image to or from the CF card. • We recommend that y ou use the optional A C Adapter Kit A CK600 to power the camera during long usage sessions ( p .
19 • Batter y performance deteriorates at low temperatures (especially with alkaline batteries). If you are using the camer a in cold areas and batteries are r unning do wn f aster than they should, y ou ma y be able to restore performance by placing batteries in an inner pocket to w ar m them up prior to use.
20 Batter y Status Indications The LCD monitor displa ys an icon or message to let you kno w when batteries are low or depleted. Installing a CF Car d 1 Be sure that the camera is turned off. Batter y P erformance * The actual performance may v ary from the above data according to the shooting conditions and the selected recording mode.
21 2 Slide the CF card slot co ver in the direction of the gray arr o w , and open it. 3 Insert the CF card into the slot, in the direction shown in the illustration. • Inser t the CF card all the wa y into the slot, so that the CF card eject button pops all the wa y out.
22 About CF Cards... • CF cards are high-precision electronic devices. Do not bend them, apply f orce to them, or subject them to shocks or vibration. • Do not attempt to disassemble or alter a CF card. • Moving a CF card rapidly between temperature extremes will cause condensation to f or m in the card and lead to a malfunction.

24 Setting the Date and Time If the Set Date/Time menu appears when y ou tur n on the camera, this means that the date battery has r un down and the camera date/time cloc k has stopped running. Replace the date batter y ( p . 94), then reset the date and time as e xplained below .

30 In macro mode, the parallax phenomenon may cause images composed with the viewfinder to be off-center . Use the LCD monitor to compose close-ups in macro mode.

36 Using the Zoom The zoom can be adjusted to an y setting in the 35 to 105 mm range in 35 mm film equivalent terms. T elephoto/Wide Angle Digital Zoom When the LCD monitor is on, you can digitally zoom in on a subject with the z oom button once it is at the maxim um optical telephoto setting.

51 4 Compose the next shot, taking care to o verlap the previous ima ge . • Minor discrepancies in the overlapping por tions can be corrected when the images are stitched together . • If you are not satisfied with the previous shot, you can use or button to return to that shot and reshoot it.

69 The optional Card Photo Printer CP-10* connects directly to your camera, allo wing you to generate beautiful prints quickly and easily . The camera produces both credit-card size and label size prints, and can create prints to meet many diff erent needs.
70 2 Connect the direct interface cable to the printer and to the camera. When disconnecting the cable from the camera’ s Digital ter minal, be sure to hold the connector at its sides and pull it straight out. 74 The printer completes pr inting of the current sheet, and then stops. The LCD monitor returns to the replay mode. Resuming Printing If you ha v e stopped printing while it was in progress, y ou can use the f ollowing procedure to resume printing of the remaining images.

79 Changing the Image Revie w Time When you tak e a shot, the camera holds the image on the LCD monitor for a specific time after you release the shutter b utton. The def ault holding time (“revie w time”) is approximately 2 seconds . If y ou like, howe ver , you can change the re view time to 10 seconds or switch the re view f eature off .
80 Y ou can use this f eature to select whether the camera resets the file number each time you insert a new CF card. Resetting the File Number • No image will display when the re view function is set to Off unless y ou continue to press the shutter button fully after shooting.
81 The [Off ] setting helps ensure that file numbers remain unique ov er multiple CF cards. This is useful if y ou are planning to download images from the cards to your computer , since it helps a void accidental ov erwrites that may occur if filenames are duplicated.
82 This setting has no eff ect on beep sounds that are issued as warnings. The camera will continue to emit these warning sounds as necessar y regardless of this setting. A beep sounds for confirmation purposes when the shutter button is pressed or a camera setting is changed.

86 The video output signal can be switched (NTSC or P AL) to accommodate diff erent regional standards ( p . 85). The default setting will v ary between regions. NTSC: J apan, U .S. A., Canada, T aiwan, etc. P AL: Europe , Asia (excluding T aiwan), Oceania, etc.
87 Downloading Images to a Computer Images can be loaded from a CF card to a computer if you are using a notebook computer , a PC card reader or a CF card reader . PC card adapter (PCMCIA adapter), sold separately , is required to use a PC card reader .
88 CF Card Reader 1 Eject the CF card fr om the camera, and inser t it into a CF car d reader connected to the computer . • Some computers or CF card readers require the power to be off when the CF card is inser ted. Since this requirement varies between models , please consult the manual f or your requirement.
89 Image F older Organization and File Names • Each x abov e stands for a single n umeral. • With the exception of [ xxx CANON] folder , all of the folders indicated above store impor tant files used by the camera to manage the image data on the card.
90 Connecting the Camera to a Computer with a USB Cable Supported Operating Systems Windows 98 (Including the Second Edition), Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), Windows 2000 * Only systems pre-installed with Windo ws 98/Me/2000 or upgr aded to Windows Me from pre-installed Windows 98 systems are supported.
91 Connection Precautions • With Windows system, the USB ports may not operate correctly on systems that hav e been upgraded to Windows 98/Me/2000 from Windows 3.
92 Connecting to a USB P or t 1 Connect the supplied USB interface cable to the computer’ s USB por t and the camera’ s Digital terminal. • Y ou do not need to tur n off the computer or camera when making this connection. • Please ref er to your computer manual f or information regarding the location of the USB por t.
93 2 T urn the camera’ s mode dial to . The LCD monitor displa ys in repla y mode. When the connection to the computer is complete, the LCD monitor turns off and the green indicator comes on. T o disconnect the cable from the camer a: Hold the cable connector firmly at both sides and pull it straight out.
94 Appendix The camera uses a special Date battery to power its internal clock. If the LCD monitor displays the Set Date/Time men u when you turn on the camera, this means that the Date battery has r un down and the clock has stopped running. Please purchase a replacement battery (batter y type CR2016) and install it as f ollows .
95 4 Pull the battery out of the holder , as shown. 5 Insert the new date battery into the holder , with the negative terminal (–) facing up. 6 Replace the date battery holder back into its original position, and close the CF card slot co ver . The LCD monitor also displays the Set Date/ Time menu the v er y first time y ou turn on the camera.
96 The indicator flashes while charging, then comes on solid when charging is finished. Using the Battery and Charger Kit CBK100 • This charger can be used only to charge Canon NB-1AH AA-size NiMH batteries. Please do not attempt to charge any other type of batteries with this charger .
97 Using the Household P ower Sour ce (A C Adapter Kit A CK600) This optional adapter kit allows y ou to operate the camera contin uously without worrying about having to stop and replace the batteries. Use of the kit is recommended when y ou are planning long sessions with the camera, and whene v er you connect the camera to a computer .
98 Be sure that the camera is turned off before connecting or disconnecting the compact power adapter . 1 Connect the power cor d to the compact power adapter , and then plug the other end into the electrical outlet. 2 Open the T erminal cover , and connect the adapter ’ s DC plug into the camera ’ s DC IN terminal.
99 Using Optional Lenses and Lens Adapters The camera suppor ts use of the optional Wide Converter WC-DC52 and the optional Close-up Lens 250D (52 mm). In order to attach either of these options, you also need to use the optional Conv ersion Lens Adapter LA-DC52.
100 Con version Lens Adapter LA-DC52 (52 mm) This optional adapter is required for attaching the optional wide con verter and the optional close-up lens.
