2 Check if the following i tems are in cluded i n your came ra package . If anything is missing, c ontact th e retailer wh ere you purchased the camera.
3 • Take some init ial test shots and play them ba ck to make sure th e images were record ed correctl y. Please no te that C anon Inc., i ts subsidiar ies and affiliate s, and its distribut ors are.
4 • Before using the product, please ensure that you read the safety precautions described below. Always ensure that the product is used correctly. • The safety precautions noted on the following pages are intended to prevent injuries to yourself and other persons, or damage to the equipment.
Safety Precautions 5 • Turn the camera off in places where camera use is prohibited. The electromagnetic waves emitted by the camera may interfere with the o peration of electronic instruments and other devices.

8 • Attach the i ncluded str ap and place i t around your neck to avoid dropping the camera duri ng use. • Attach the included l ens cap cord to the strap. • Be sure to remove th e lens cap before t urning on the camera. Clip the lens cap to the neck strap when not in use.
9 Use the incl uded char ger to cha rge the bat tery. Be sure to charge the batter y as it is not c harged at the ti me of purchase. Remove the co ver. Insert the battery. z Align the S marks on the battery and charger, t hen inse rt the bat tery by sl iding it in ( ) and down ( ).
Charging the Battery 10 Number of Possible Shots/Shooting and Playb ack Times *1 The number of sho ts that can be ta ken is based on the Camera & Imaging Pro ducts Association (CIPA) measurement st andard.
Compatible Memory Cards (Sold Separately) 11 The cards bel ow can be used wit hout restri ctions on the ir capaciti es. • SD memory cards* • SDHC memory cards* • SDXC memo ry cards* • Eye-Fi cards * This memor y card complies with SD standard s.
12 Insert the i ncluded ba ttery and a memory card (sold se parately). Check the card’s write-protect tab. z If the memory card has a write-protect tab, you will not be able to re cord image s if the tab is in th e locked p osition. Sli de the ta b up until you h ear a click.
Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 13 Remove the battery. z Open the cove r and press the battery lock in the direc tion of the arro w. X The battery will pop up. Remove the memory ca rd. z Push the memory card i n until you hear a click, then slowly re lease it.
14 Open the screen. z Open the screen ( ), and ro tate it forward (toward the len s) 180° ( ). z Close the scr een ( ). z You can adjust the angle and orientati on of the screen fo r the shooti ng condition s. z To protec t the scre en, alwa ys keep it closed, fa cing the ca mera body w hen the camera is not i n use.
15 The Date/Time se ttings scre en will appea r the first time the camera is turned on. Since th e dates and time s recorded int o your images ar e based on the se settings, b e sure to s et them. Turn on the camera. z Press the power button. X The Date/Time screen will ap pear.
Setting the Date and Time 16 You can change the curren t date and time settings. Display the menu. z Press the n butt on. Choose [Date/Time]. z Move the zoo m lever to choo se the 3 tab. z Press the op buttons or turn the 5 dial to choose [Dat e/Time], t hen press the m button.
17 You can change the langua ge that displ ays on the scre en. Enter Playback mode. z Press the 1 butt on. Display the settings scr een. z Press and hold the m button, then immediately pr ess the n button. Set the disp lay languag e. z Press the opqr buttons or turn the 5 dial to choos e a language, then press the m button.
18 Before you us e a new memory car d or one that ha s been formatt ed in other devices, y ou should f ormat the card with this camera. Formattin g (initial izing) a memory card erases al l data on the memo ry card. As you canno t retrieve the erased da ta, exerci se adequate caution befo re formatting the memory card.
Pressing the Shutter Button 19 To take imag es that are in focus, be sure t o first pres s the shu tter button lightly (hal fway) to fo cus, then p ress fully t o shoot. Press halfway (Press lightly to focus). z Press light ly until the ca mera beeps twi ce and AF frames app ear where th e camera focused.
20 Since the ca mera can determi ne the subj ect and shoot ing conditio ns, you can let it automatic ally select th e best sett ings for the sc ene and just shoot. When the flash fires, th e white bala nce of th e main subjec t and backgr ound will b e automaticall y adjuste d to obtain the best color (Mu lti-area Whit e Balance).
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 21 Focus. z Press the shutter bu tton halfway to focus. X When the came ra focuses, it will beep twice and AF fra mes will appear w here the camera focuse d. Several AF fr ames will appea r when the camera focuse s on more than 1 poi nt.
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 22 • What if white and gray frames appear when you point the came ra toward a subject? A white frame appears on the face or su bject that the camera detected as t he main subject, while gray frame s appear on other detected faces.
Viewing Images 23 You can view th e images you ha ve taken on the screen. Enter Playback mode. z Press the 1 butt on. X The last image y ou took will appear. Choose an image. z Pressing t he q butto n or turnin g the 5 dial counte r-clockwis e will cycle t hrough the images fr om newest to old est.
24 You can choose and erase ima ges one at a time. Please note t hat erased images canno t be recover ed. Exercis e adequate caut ion before e rasing an image. Enter Playback mode. z Press the 1 butt on. X The last image y ou took will appear. Choose an image to erase .
25 The camera wi ll determi ne the subj ect and shoo ting con ditions, a nd select t he best settin gs for the s cene. The audio will record in s tereo. Set the camera to A mode and compose the shot. z Follow Steps 1 – 3 on p. 20 to co mpose the shot.
Shooting Movies 26 Stop shooting. z Press the movi e button agai n. X The camera will beep twice and stop shooting th e movie. X Shooting wil l automatic ally stop whe n the memory card fills. Shooting Time • Shooting times are based on default settings.
27 You can view th e movies you ha ve shot on the sc reen. Enter Playback mode. z Press the 1 butt on. X The last image y ou took will appear. X appears on movi es. Choose a movie. z Press the qr buttons or turn the 5 dial to choose a movi e, then pr ess the m but ton.

Transferring Images to a Computer for Viewing 29 Macintosh Windows Vist a and Mac OS X (v10.5) are used for t hese explanat ions. Place the CD-ROM in the computer’s CD-R OM drive. z Place the suppl ied CD-ROM (DIGITA L CAMERA Solution Disk ) (p. 2) into the computer’s C D-ROM drive.
Transferring Images to a Computer for Viewing 30 Complete the installation. z For Windows, clic k [Restart] o r [Finish], then remove the CD-ROM whe n your desktop sc reen appears . z For Macintos h, click [Fi nish] in the scr een that appear s when the inst allation is complete, then re move the CD-ROM when your desktop screen appear s.
Transferring Images to a Computer for Viewing 31 Transfer Images. z Click [Import Images from Came ra], and then click [Import Un transfer red Images]. X Images will tr ansfer to th e computer. Images will be so rted by date and sa ved in separate fo lders in the Pi ctures f older.
