Agilent 6800 Series AC Power Source/Analyzer Product Note Using the Agilent T echnologies 6800 Series AC Power Source/Analyzers for Generation and Measurement Applications: • Simulating A C Line Sub.
3 4 6 8 11 14 18 21 24 28 Introduction This note pro vides information on ho w you can use the features of the Agilent Technologies 6800 series ac po wer source/anal yzers to address a variety of applications.
The 6800 series ac po wer source/anal yzers are members of the A gilent T echnologies “One-Bo x” Solution po wer products famil y. These products offer an integrat ed solution f or ac pow er testing applications.
A programmable output value of the ac pow er source/analyzer can operate in one of f our modes: FIXED, Step, Pulse, or List. The default setting is FIXED mode, where the output will st a y “f ix ed” at the programmed value until anot her command is sent to change it.

In A TE applications, triggers are of ten a conven- ient way of synchr onizing test syst em ev ents and increasing test throughput. These benef its also apply to the triggering subsystems in t he 6800 series products since these products combine the capabilities of many test instruments.

The built-in po wer analyzer capability off ers many voltage, current, and pow er measurements to the user . While on, the ac po wer sour ce/analyzers are continuously sam pling inst antaneous output volt- age and current for sev eral output cycles and writ- ing the dat a to buf f ers.
How Can the Acquisition of V oltage and Current Data be Controlled? T w o characteristics of t he voltage and current acquisition can be controlled: the sample rate, and the beginning of acquisition relative to the trigger .
The follo wing section contains six application examples. F or each application, there is: • An o verview of the application • A description of the A gilent 6800 series f eatures used to implem.
Overview of application The ability of a switching pow er supply to main- tain its output voltage setting in t he presence of typical ac line disturbances is critical to its end- use.
U pon the receipt of the trigger , the ac source continues to output a 120 V r ms, 60 Hz sinewa ve for 5 seconds. After the 5-second trigger delay , the r ms v olt age drops to 0 V rms at 80° of t he cycle and then rises back to 120 V rms (0.001389 seconds later) at 110° of the cycle.

Overview of application U .S. Militar y Standard 704D (September 30, 1980) establishes t he requirements of electrical po wer transfer betw een the aircraft or g round support electrical system, and the electronic equipment utilizing this pow er on board the aircraft.

Overview of application IEC 555-2 (1982) is a regulator y st andard that pert ains to ac line disturbances, namely current harmonics. These cur rent harmonics are caused by connecting household appliances and similar elec- trical equipment to a 230 V , 50 Hz ac mains.
Agilent 6800 series setup • The ac source output is connected to the ac input of the equipment under test. • Set the output wav eform to sine. • Set the r ms v olt age to Fixed mode. • Set the frequency to F ix ed mode. • Set the voltage to 230 Vrms.
.
Overview of application Swit ch mode pow er supplies are commonly used in many electr onic products. These po wer supplies typically ha ve in put capacit ors that cause high lev els of peak inr ush current to be drawn as they charge from the rectified line at tur n-on.
Agilent 6800 series setup • Set the initial (immediate) voltage t o 0 V rms. • Set the triggered voltage level to 120 V rms. • Set the frequency to 60 Hz. • Set the peak cur rent limit to maximum. • Set the transient trigger source to BUS.
.
Overview of application The creation of user -def ined wa vef or ms is useful for simulating ac line disturbances that are unique to the operational environment of the device being tested, and t hen measuring that device’s suscepti- bility to the disturbance.
Agilent 6800 series setup • Connect the ac source output to the ac input of the equipment under test. • Use the computer to develop a 1024 point array representing a cy cle of voltage amplitude data. • Use the TR A Ce:DEFine command to name t he wav eform CL ASS 1 and allocate non-volatile storage space.
