4 2. Introduction The D-Link Air D W L-510 W ireless Cardbus Adapter is an 802.11b wireless adapter that supports high-speed wireless ne twork ing at home, at w ork or in public places.

Getting Star ted There ar e basically two modes of networking : Infrastructure – using an Access Point, such as t he DW L-6000AP Ad - H o c – directly connecting to another computer, for peer-to-peer communication, using wireless network adapters on each computer, such as two or more DW L-510 PCI adapt ers.
11 Getting Sta rted Setting Up an I nfrastructure Net work You will need broadband Internet access ( a Cable or DSL- subscriber line into your home or off ice) Consult with your Cable or DSL provider f or proper inst allation of the modem. Connect the Cable or DSL m odem to your Broadband r outer (s uch as the D-Link DI -614+ .

13 5. Using the Configuration Utility If you want to alter the de f ault settings or optimize the performance o f the DW L-510, D-Link has included a conf igurat ion utility to do so.
14 Configuration Utility Link Info Aft er click ing on the Conf ig uration Ut ility icon, the Link I nfo screen will display the following: Status: Displays the MAC Address o f the Access Point that is associ ated with the DW L-510. SSID: The Service Set Identifier is the name assi gned to the wireless netw ork.
15 Configuration Utility Configuration To communicat e on the n etwork all devices must have the same settings f or the f ollowing properties: SSID- (Servic e Set I dentif ier) is a nam e that iden tifie s a wirel ess net work.

20 6. T r oubleshooting This chapter provides solutions to p roblem s that can oc cur during the installation and operation of the DW L-510 W ireless Adapter. Read the following descript ions i f you are having problems. (The examples b elow are illustrated in W indows XP.
21 Troubleshooting • Double-click on Netw or k Ad a p t e r s • Right-click on D-Li nk Air DWL-510 Wireless PCI Ad a p t e r • Select Properties to check that the dr ivers are installed properly. • Look under Device Status to check t hat the device is working properly.
22 Troubleshooting 2. I cannot connect to the access point or t he w ireless rout er. • M ak e sure that the SSID on the DW L-510 PCI ad apter is exactly the same as the SSID on the Access Point or wireless router. 3. The DWL-510 Link light s are not on.
23 • Check that the IP Add ress, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings are correct ly entered for the network • In Infra struc ture mode, make sure the same Service Set Identifier (SSID) is specified on the se tt ings for the wireless clients and access points.

25 Networking Basics Using the Network Setup Wizard in Windows XP Please follow all the instr uctions in this window: Click Next In the following window, select the best description o f your computer. If your computer connects to the Internet throug h a gateway/router , select the second option as shown.
26 Networking Basics Enter a Computer descri ption and a Computer name. Click Next Enter a Workgroup na me. All computers on your network should have the same Workgroup name.

If y ou are us ing a DHCP-c apa ble Gateway/Router y ou will not need to assign Static IP Addresses .

37 Networking Basics Checking the Wireless Connection by Pinging For Windows XP and 2000: Go to Sta r t > Run > type cmd . A window similar to this will appear. Type ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx , where xxx is the IP address of the W ireless Router or Access Point.
38 Networking Basics Adding and Sharing Printers in Windows XP After you have run the Netw or k S etu p Wiz a rd on all the computers in your network (please see the Network Setup Wizard sect ion at the be ginning of Networking Basics ) you can use the A dd Printer Wiza rd to add or share a printer on your network .
