1 Introduction The Integrated Sensor Suite (ISS) collects out side weather data and sends the data to a V antage Pro2 console or W eather Envoy . Wire less and cabled versions of the ISS are available, as well as Standa rd and Plus versions. The W ireless ISS is solar powered and sends data to the con s ole via a low-power radio.
Preparing the ISS for Installation 2 Note: If the ISS is a Pl us model and cont ains UV and so lar sensors, do not touch t he small white dif fusers on top of t he sensors.
Preparing the ISS for Installation 3 The steps to prepare the ISS for insta llation are: • Assemble t he anemometer . • Check the factory-installed sens or cable connections to the SIM. • Connect the anemometer sensor cable to the S IM. • Apply power to the ISS and test commun ication with the console.
Check SIM Sensor Connections 4 4. Slide the tooth-lock washer and hex nut onto the machine screw . Tighten the hex nut while holding the screw with a Phillips head screwdriver to prevent it from turning.
Check SIM Sensor Connections 5 Open the SIM Box 1. Locate the white box with the solar panel containing the SIM on the front of the ISS unit. The cabled model does not have a solar panel. 2. Locate the whit e tab at the bottom ce nter of the SIM box cover .
Check SIM Sensor Connections 6 Connect the Anemometer Cable to the SIM 1. Unwind the coi l of cable enou gh to work with the anemometer . Note: Do not unwind the entire coil of anemometer cabl e at this time. 2. Pull the foam insert out of cable access port in between the ca bles and set the foam insert aside.
7 Cabled ISS Assembly The Cabled ISS system co ntains a cable for connecting the ISS to a V antage Pro2 cabled console. Once the anemometer has been inst alled and the sensors ha ve been checked, a cabled connection between the ISS and the console can be es tablished.
Troubleshooting Cabled ISS Communication 8 Approximately one minute after power-up the outside relative humidity reading should be displaye d on the console. 5. If the ISS contains a UV sensor and/or so lar sensor , press 2ND and then p ress RAIN YR for current ultraviolet readings or press 2ND then press RAIN DA Y for solar radiation readings.
9 Wireless ISS Assembly The ISS has a wireless conne ction to a V antage Pro2 wi reless console. Once the anemometer has been installed and th e sens ors have been checked, the ISS must be powered and a wireless communication channel must be established between the ISS and the console.
Verifying Data from the ISS Sensors 10 V erifying Data from the ISS Sensors Use these steps to v erify reception of ISS data at the wireless V antage Pro2 console and to test the operation of the ISS sensors. 1. Press and hold DONE until the Current W eathe r screen displays, if the console is in Setup Mode.
Troubleshooting Wireless ISS Reception 11 Note: If the LED is flashing rapid ly , call T echnical Support. See “Cont acting Davis Instruments” on page 2 7 for more i nformation. See “SIM Board Display and Contents” on page 30 for information on locating the components and points of interest on the SIM board.
Troubleshooting Wireless ISS Reception 12 T ransmitter ID DIP Switches in T op-right Corner of SIM T o change to another ID, use a ballpoint pen or paper clip to toggle DIP switches #1, 2, and 3. The settings for T ransmitter IDs 1 - 8 are shown in the table below .
13 Prep aring the ISS for Inst allation Once all the sensors have been co nnected and communication betw een the IS S and the console has been successfu lly established, c ontinue to prepare the ISS unit for installation. The steps for preparing the ISS for installation are as follows.
Prepare the Rain Collector 14 4. While watching the daily rain display , tip the bucket until it drops to the op posite side, then wait two seconds to see if the display registers a rain readin g. Each tip indicates 0.01" of rain and may take up to a minute to register at the cons ole.
Locating the ISS and Anemometer 15 5. Slide the magnet, exposed end of magnet first, into the open slot of the metric adapter . 6. Insert the metric adapter and ma gnet between the arms of the bucket, with the solid side of the metric adapte r facing up.
Locating the ISS and Anemometer 16 For agricultural applications (Important for evapotranspi ration (ET) calculations) : • Install the ISS and anemometer as a si ngle unit with the radiation shield 5' (1.5 m) above the ground and in the middl e of the farm b etween similar crop types (i.
Locating the ISS and Anemometer 17 Optional: Anemometer Cable Length Considerations • All V antage Pro2 stations include a 40' (12 m) cable to go between the ISS and the anemometer . This can be extended up to 540' (165 m) using optional extension cables purchased from Davis Instruments.
Locating the ISS and Anemometer 18 • If possible, align the pivot joints of both th e ISS a nd the console antenna s so that they are facing each other fo r maximum signal strength. • The ISS and console antennas do not rotate in a complete circle.
19 Inst alling the ISS The anemometer an d the main part of the ISS ca n be installed either together as a single unit on a pole, or apart from each other . The main part of the ISS includ es the rain collector , the temperature and humidi ty sensors, the radiation shield, and the SIM housing.
Installing the ISS on a Flat Surface 20 Inst allation Instructions There are several ways to mount and install the ISS unit. The foll owing are installation types that Davis Instruments recommends. Individ ual ISS lo cations and installations may vary .
Installing the ISS on a Pole 21 Option 2: Installing the A nemometer on a Post or Flat Surface 1. W ith a 3/16" (5 mm) drill bit, drill two hol es approximately 2-1/8" (54 mm) apa rt. Use a carpenter’ s level to ensure the hole s will be level.
Installing the ISS on a Pole 22 Guidelines for Inst alling the ISS on a Pole • When mounting both sides together , remember that whichever side of the ISS is mounted first, the U-bolt from the opposite side must also be placed around the pole before tightening the U-bolts.
Finishing the Installation 23 3. T ighten the hex nuts using an adjustable wrench or 7/16" wrench. 4. Re-attach the rain collector cone. Set the cone back on the base so its latche s slide downward into the latch openings on the base. Rotate th e cone clockwise.
Additional Mounting Options 24 Extending the Console Cable (Cabled ISS Only) A Cabled ISS can be extended up to 1000' (300 m) away from the console by using Davis Instruments extension cables (#7876). Relocating the Anemometer Using Extension Cables: Note: Not all cables are compatible with your V antage Pro2 system.
25 Maintenance and T roubleshooting Maint aining UV and Solar Radiation Sensors If the ISS is a Plus model and contains UV a nd solar radiation sensors, do not touch the small white diffusers on top of the sensors. Oi l from skin reduces their sensitivity .
Troubleshooting 26 Note: For some models of the ISS, th e order in which the five radiation shield plates are assembled may be slightly dif ferent than the o rder shown in the figure on page 25. For this reason, ensure that yo u always reassemble the plate s in the same order in which they were disassembled.
Troubleshooting 27 “The wind cups are spinning but my console displays 0 mph.” The signal from the wind cups may not be ma king it back to the display . Remove the cups from the anemomete r (loosen the set screw). Put the cups back onto the shaft and make sure to slide them up the sh aft as far as possible.
28 Appendices Appendix A: Re-orienting the Wind V ane The V antage Pro2 station is configured to register wind direction correctly if the anemometer points to true north. If the anemometer shaft cannot be mounted to point to true north, use the following instructions to correct the wind vane orientation.
Appendix B: Specifications 29 1 1. T est the anemometer by pointing the wi nd vane in any directio n and making sure the console displa ys the correct wi nd direction. Remove and re-adjust the vane if it does not. Allo w the wind direction display approximately 5 seconds to stabilize a fter turning the shaft.
