5 This section provides information about setting up your Dell ™ Inspiron ™ laptop. Before Setting Up Y our Computer When positioning your computer , ensure that you allow easy access to a power source, adequate ventilation, and a level surface to place your computer .

9 Setting Up Y our Inspiron Laptop Set Up Microsoft Windows Y our Dell computer is preconfigured with Microsoft ® Windows ® operating system. T o set up Windows for the first time, follow the instructions on the screen. These steps are mandatory and may take some time to complete.
10 Setting Up Y our Inspiron Laptop Install the SIM Card (Optional) Installing a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card allows you to browse the Internet, check e-mail, and connect to a Virtual Private Network. T o access these features, you must be within the network of your cellular service provider .
11 Setting Up Y our Inspiron Laptop T o install the SIM card: T urn off your computer . 1. Remove the battery (see “Removing and Replacing the Battery” on page 2. 34 ). In the battery bay , slide the SIM card into the SIM card slot. 3. Replace the battery (see “Removing and Replacing the Battery” on page 4.

26 Using Y our Inspiron Laptop T ouch Pad Gestures Scroll Allows you to scroll through content. The scroll feature includes: T raditional Scroll — Allows you to scroll up and down, or right and left. T o scroll up and down: Move a finger up or down in the vertical scroll zone (extreme right of the touch pad).
27 Using Y our Inspiron Laptop Zoom Allows you to increase or decrease the magnification of the screen content. The zoom feature includes: One finger zoom — Allows you to zoom in or out. T o zoom in: Move a finger up in the zoom zone (extreme left of the touch pad).
28 Using Y our Inspiron Laptop Multimedia Control Keys The multimedia control keys are located on the function key row on the keyboard. T o use the multimedia controls, press the required key .

34 Using Y our Inspiron Laptop Dell Extended Battery Life The Dell Extended Battery Life feature provides options to derive the maximum backup time from your battery . This feature is enabled by default and is activated when you disconnect the AC power .
35 Using Y our Inspiron Laptop T o replace the battery: Align the tabs on the battery with the slots on the battery bay . 1. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it clicks into place.

41 Solving Problems This section provides troubleshooting information for your computer . If you cannot solve your problem using the following guidelines, see “Using Support T ools” on page 48 or “Contacting Dell” on page 6 8. Beep Codes Y our computer may emit a series of beeps during start-up if there are errors or problems.
42 Solving Problems Network Problems Wireless Connections If the wireless network connection is lost — The wireless router is offline or wireless has been disabled on the computer . Ensure that wireless is enabled (see “Enable • or Disable Wireless” on page 12 ).
43 Solving Problems Power Problems If the power or battery indicator light is off — The computer is either turned off, in standby or hibernate mode, or not receiving power . Press the power button. The computer • resumes normal operation if it is off or in hibernate mode.
44 Solving Problems If the power indicator light is breathing white — The computer is in standby mode. Press a key on the keyboard, move the • connected mouse or a finger on the touch pad, or press the power button to resume normal operation. If the problem persists, contact Dell (see • “Contacting Dell” on page 68 ).
45 Solving Problems Memory Problems If you receive an insufficient memory message — Save and close any open files and exit any • open programs you are not using to see if that resolves the problem. See the software documentation for • minimum memory requirements.
46 Solving Problems Lockups and Software Problems If the computer does not start up — Ensure that the power cable is firmly connected to the computer and to the electrical outlet. If a program stops responding — End the program: Press <Ctrl><Shift><Esc> simultaneously .

After you reinstall the operating system, you must also reinstall the device drivers, virus protection program, and other software.
