5 This section provides information about setting up your Inspiron ™ laptop. Before Setting Up Y our Computer When positioning your computer , ensure that you allow easy access to a power source, adequate ventilation, and a level surface to place your computer .

Beep Codes Y our computer might emit a series of beeps during start-up if there are errors or problems.
41 Solving Problems Network Problems Wireless Connections If the wireless network connection is lost — The wireless router is offline or wireless has been disabled on the computer . Check your wireless router to ensure it is • powered on and connected to your data source (cable modem or network hub).
42 Solving Problems Ensure that the electrical outlet is working • by testing it with another device, such as a lamp. Check the AC adapter cable connections.
43 Solving Problems Move the connected mouse or a finger on • the touch pad to resume normal operation. If the display is not responding, press the • power button until the computer turns off and then turn it back on. If the problem persists, contact Dell (see • “Contacting Dell” on page 69 ).
44 Solving Problems Lockups and Software Problems If the computer does not start up — Ensure that the power cable is firmly connected to the computer and to the electrical outlet. If a program stops responding — End the program: Press <Ctrl><Shift><Esc> simultaneously .

53 Restoring Y our Operating System Y ou can restore your operating system in the following ways: System • Restore returns your computer to an earlier operating state without affecting data files. Use System Restore as the first solution for restoring your operating system and preserving data files.
54 Restoring Y our Operating System System Restore The Windows operating systems provide a System Restore option which allows you to return your computer to an earlier operating state (without affecting data files) if changes to the hardware, software, or other system settings have left the computer in an undesirable operating state.
55 Restoring Y our Operating System Undoing the Last System Restore NOTE: Before you undo the last system restore, save and close all open files and exit any open programs. Do not alter , open, or delete any files or programs until the system restoration is complete.

59 Restoring Y our Operating System Operating System Reinstallation Before Y ou Begin If you are considering reinstalling the Windows operating system to correct a problem with a newly installed driver , first try using Windows Device Driver Rollback.
