5 This section provides information about setting up your Inspiron 1320 laptop. Before Setting Up Y our Computer When positioning your computer , ensure that you allow easy access to a power source, adequate ventilation, and a level surface to place your computer .

If you cannot solve your problem using the following guidelines, see “Using Support T ools” on page 37 or “Contacting Dell” on page 55. 30 Solving Problems T wo beeps — No RAM detected Remove the memory modules, reinstall • one module and restart the computer . If the computer starts normally , reinstall an additional module. Continue until you have identified a faulty module or reinstalled all modules without an error .
31 Solving Problems Network Problems Wireless Connections If the wireless network connection is lost — The wireless router is offline or wireless has been disabled on the computer . Check your wireless router to ensure it is • powered on and connected to your data source (cable modem or network hub).
32 Solving Problems Power Problems If the power light is off — The computer is either turned off, in hibernate state or is not receiving power . Reseat the power cable into both the • power connector on the computer and the electrical outlet.
33 Solving Problems Move the connected mouse or a finger on • the touch pad or press the power button to resume normal operation. If the display is not responding, press the • power button until the computer turns off and then turn it back on.
34 Solving Problems Memory Problems If you receive an insufficient memory message — Save and close any open files and exit any • open programs you are not using to see if that resolves the problem. See the software documentation for • minimum memory requirements.
35 Solving Problems Lockups and Software Problems If the computer does not start up — Ensure that the power cable is firmly connected to the computer and to the electrical outlet. If a program stops responding — End the program: Press <Ctrl><Shift><Esc> simultaneously .
36 Solving Problems If a program is designed for an earlier Microsoft ® Windows ® operating system — Run the Program Compatibility Wizard . The Program Compatibility Wizard configures a program so that it runs in an environment similar to non-Windows Vista operating system environments.

If the hard drive is your boot device, ensure • that the cables are connected and that the drive is installed properly and partitioned as a boot device.
