IMPORTANT INFORMATION • Prior to beginning the insta llation of the acce ss control sy stem, we suggest that you become familiar with the instruction s, illustrations, and wiring guidelines in t his manual. This will help insure that you installation is perform ed i n an efficient and professio nal manner.
FEATURES • Can provide service for up to 3000 system users. • Can store up to 8000 card, transmitter or digital PIN codes. • Can interface with DKS Remote Call Sta tions to provide telephone com munication and entry control (P/N 1838-12 0, 183 8-121).
SECTION 1 - INST ALLA TION If you are going to use a t elephone line with this controller, order it at least two weeks prior to the planned installation date.
1.1.1 Mount Information If used to control a door o r pedestrian gate, try to lo cate the access co ntroller as nea r as possible to the entry point. The unit should be mo unted on a rigi d wall to prevent exce ssive shock and vibration from closing doors or gates.
1.2 Memory Chip Installation The access cont roller is shipped with two memory chips packaged i n a separate box insid e the shipping containe r. The memory chip s must be installed for the system to opera te. CAUTION!! Do not install the memor y chips with po wer to the system turned on.

SECTION 2 – WIRING Prior to installing wiring to the ac cess control system, we suggest that you beco me familiar with the instructions, illustrations, and wiring guidelin es in this manual. This will help insure that you installation is performed in an efficient and professio nal manner.
2.1 WIRING GUIDELINES Do not run high voltage (115 V) powe r lines and communi cation lines in the same conduit. These should be in separate conduits at lea st six (6) inches apart. Be sure that all phone line wiring is twisted and completely isolate d from ground .

2.3.7 Postal Lock Box Installation & Wiring – Optional At some locations, su ch as gated communities, it may be necessary to provide acce ss to the mail carrier so that they can deliver the mail. Mail ca rrier access can b e provided by the install ation of an Arrow Postal Lock into a DoorKing Post al Lock Box (p/n 1402-080 ).
SECTION 3 – PROGRAMMING IMPORTANT ! Many of the advanced features avail able with this access control system cannot be programmed from the syst em keypad. These featur es include rel ay hold open time zones, se curity levels, anti-pass back tables, elevator control options and programming via the internet u sing DKS servers.
3.1.2 Programming from the Keypad Follow the programming instructions as desc ribed in each section of this manual. The sys tem will prompt you with short tones (beep ) when programmi ng steps have bee n followed correctly, and with a long tone (beeeeeep) when the p rogramming step is en ded.
3.2 PROGRAMMING WITH A PC Prior to programming the PC Programmable A ccess Control System with the DoorKing Rem ote Account Manager for Windows software and the us er supplied PC, the system must have the MASTER CODE programmed into it. The maste r code cannot be set with the PC and must be programmed from the syst em keyp ad.
3.2.4 Open Tone On or Off The following programmin g sequence turns the open tone (whe n the relays act ivate) either On or Off. This feature is available on Rev J boa rd s or higher. Factory setting = 1 (tone on) 1. Press * 1 5 and then enter the four digit master code _ _ _ _ (bee p ).
3.3 GENERAL PROGRAMMING Proceed with the programming ste ps on the following pages only if PC progra mming will not be used. 3.3.1 Relay Strike Time These steps will program Relay 1 a nd Relay 2 strike times. Strike times can be programmed from 1/4 second (enter 00 in step 4) up to 99 seco nds by en tering the d esired time in second s.
3.3.3 Tone Open Numbers These steps will pro gram the tone open numbers for relays 1 and 2. You will need to enter a four- digit number (see chart below) to set the relay functions.
3.3.5 Touch-tone / Rotary -dial This programming sequence will set the remote call station to dial out in either a touch-tone or rotary format. Generally, this will be set for touch-tone. Factory setting = touch-tone . NOTE: This programming step is only used when a DKS Remote Call Station is connected to the 1838 system.
3.4 PROGRAMMING PHONE NUMBER NOTE: These program ming steps are only used w hen a DKS 18 38-120 or 1838-121 Remo te Call Station is connected to the 1838 s y stem. 3.4.1 Programming the Directory Code Len gth This programming sequen ce sets the directory code l ength to 1 - 2 - 3 or 4 digits.
3.4.3 Programming Area Code Program an area code when 10-digit or l ong distan ce calling is required. The area cod e will be entered as a four-digit number (1 + the three digit ar e a code) for long distan ce dialing. If an area code is being programmed to facilitate 10-digit calli ng requirement s, precede th e three-digit area code with #.
3.4.5 Delete Phone Number This programming sequen ce is u sed to delete the phone number under a kno w n dire ctory code. 1. Press * 0 1 and enter the four-digit MASTER CODE _ _ _ _ (bee p). 2. Enter the directory code (1, 2, 3 or 4 digits dependi ng on what was prog rammed in 3.
The PC programmable access co ntro l system must be eq uipped with a MemPLUS chip to progra m device codes into its mem ory. Device codes must be five (5) digi ts in length and are typically card and transmitter codes. Each devic e code that you enter is assigned to the di rectory code that you select.
3.6 FOUR-DIGIT ENTRY CODE A DoorKing slave keypad (P/N 1814-075) is requi red if four-digit entry codes a re going to be used to access a door or gate. It i s important to understand that fou r-digit entry codes are n ot the same as a five-digit PIN (Personal Identification Number) cod e inputted to the system from a weigand keypad.
3.7 ANTI-PASS BACK – 1833, 1835 , 1837 only with APB CHIP SET The programming steps b elow will allow you to se t up and program some basic functions for the anti- pass back feature. However, you must set up the IN and OUT relay programming table in the Remote Account Manager software, version 5.

3.8.1 Master Code Switch 1. The master code switch is left in the off position for normal ope ration. Turn the maste r code switch on whe n setting the system mast er code.
Note: 3.8.4 and 3.8.5 are only applicable if a Remote Call Station is connected to the 1838 controller. 3.8.4 Speaker Volume, Microphone and Fe edbac k Speaker volume, microphone volume and feed back all interact with each other to affect the audio performance of the system.
SECTION 4 – OPERA TING INSTRUCTIONS 4.1 USER INSTRUCTIONS 4.1.1 Card Access Card access is provided b y card readers or automat i c vehicle Identification devices (AVID) that can be connected to the 1838 controller. 1. If the system uses proximity type readers, p r esent the card or PR OXmtr™ to the reader by holding it close the reader head.
4.2 SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS The system administrator can perfo rm the following operations from a remote l ocation using a touch- tone telephone if the op tional telephone line has been connected to the 1838 control ler . You must know the phone number of the line that the sy stem is installe d on and t he system ma ster code.
SECTION 5 – MAINTENANCE The DoorKing 1838 access controller is essentially a maintenance free devic e. When the unit is properly installed, it sh ould provide years of tro uble free service. Maintenance is limited to updating the directory and phone numbe r and/or card/transmit ter codes as user s are added and delet ed from the system.
SYMPTON POSSIBLE SOLUTION(S) Cannot get into programming mode. Wrong master code entered. Start over. Waiting too long between pushing butt ons. Enter information quicker. Keypad is not plugged into board correctly. Cable points to the left. Memory chips are installed backwards.
SYMPTON POSSIBLE SOLUTION(S) Four-digit entry codes will not work. Forgetting to press # first. Re-program the entry code range s (3.6.3). Entry codes will not activate relay 1. Re-program relay 1 low and high ranges (3.6.3). Entry codes will not activate relay 2.
5.1.2 Floor, Elevator, Security Level Test Programming This programming sequ ence is include d for troubles hooting the elevator cont rol board(s) only.
5.1.4 Elevator Board / Floor Hardware Tes t This testing sequence will allow you to check acti vation of individual relays on the elevator control board(s) and will confirm comm unication between the 1838 circuit board an d the elevator control board(s).
5.2 ACCESSORIES Card Readers A variety of DKS, AWID and HID proximity readers are available for use with the 1838 controller. Most 26-bit card readers will interface with the 1838 controller. RF Devices RF devices provide remote access control for vehicular gates.
5.3 LOG TABLES Complete the information i n the tables on the following p ages to maintain a reco rd of the information that has been programmed into the a ccess control system if the system IS NOT being program med from a PC.
