- 1 - W elcome to CoPilot! Imagine… a CoPilot at your side that al wa ys knows wher e you ar e, where you’ re going, and exactly how to get ther e . Now confi dently drive an ywhere while CoPilot, using the latest, most accurate GPS technology , shows you all the corr ect turns to take to r each your destination.
- 2 - Getting Star ted Requir ements This User’ s Guide includes complete instructions for installing your CoPilot software, downloading map data to the Motorola Q, and using CoPilot on the Q to guide you to y our destination or to plan trips.
- 3 - Connecting Y our Motor ola Q NO TE: If a Quickstar t installation memor y card was included with your pur chase of CoPilot, you do not need to do this. In order to successfully transf er data from y our desktop to your Motorola Q, you must ha ve Micr osoft ActiveSync 3.
- 4 - Installing CoPilot Installing Fr om a Quickstar t Installation Memor y Card: 1. Set up your Motorola Q and charge the battery following the instructions in your Motor ola Q manual. 2. Y ou must set the correct date and GMT time on y our Motorola Q for optimal GPS functionality .
- 5 - Three W ays to Activate: 1. Recommended: Automatic Activation using your Q’ s Wireless Internet Connection a. Select the ACTIV A TE soft ke y . b. Select MENU then AUT OMA TIC . c. Enter your e-mail addr ess and press NEXT . CoPilot will now activate ov er the Internet.
- 6 - Map Do wnload to the Motor ola Q NO TE: If your CoPilot product came with a Quickstart installation memor y card, you don’ t need to download map data (it’ s already on your Quickstart card). Y ou can skip to Using CoPilot for Guidance , p. 14.
- 7 - Selecting a Data Area After you specify a location wher e the data will be stored, you will be prompted to select a r egion on the map to download.
- 8 - 1. Click the Map Area icon in the Data Download Wizard. Map Ar ea This method of selecting data allows y ou to choose an area of data by dra wing a box on the Data Download Wizard’ s map screen. In the Wizard, you enter a city name near which you w ould like to select data, then click Next .
- 9 - 1. Click the T rip icon in the Data Download Wizard. T rip This method of selecting data is by far the most customizable method. It allows y ou to run a trip and select street-le vel data specifi c to that trip , thereb y a voiding unneeded data and sa ving valuable memor y space .
- 10 - 6. Y ou will return to the Data Selection menu wher e you can select another data area if y ou lik e, using any method. When you fi nish selecting data ar eas, click Do wnload . T rip itineraries that wer e created using the Tr i p download method will be transferr ed along with map data (see p .
- 11 - POI Do wnload Options When you do wnload a data region fr om your desktop PC , you get all roads within that region. Also included are r egional points of interest (POI) such as gas stations, hotels, restaurants, visitor attractions, etc. CoPilot now lets y ou control the n umber and types of POI that get downloaded along with map data.
- 12 - Impor ting Custom Places CoPilot’ s Custom Place Impor t Wizard enables you to import addr esses from y our Outlook Contacts database , an Excel fi le , or text fi le . (If you are using another type of database or contact manager , you can export your contacts/ locations to an Excel or text fi le befor e impor ting them into CoPilot.
- 13 - Editing Custom Places After custom places ha ve been ad ded to the database, they can be edited at any time. Select Manage Custom Places from the T ools menu, then highlight the custom place you wish to edit, click Edit , and make y our changes.
- 14 - Using CoPilot for Guidance In CoPilot’ s Guidance Mode on your Motorola Q, you will r eceive turn-by- turn route guidance inf ormation as you tra vel. For your safety , the Safety View scr een will hide maps when your speed exceeds 10 m.p .h.
- 15 - Step 2 Step 3 Step 3a (Optional) Step 3b (Optional) 2. In the Address screen, enter a Street Name with or without a House Number , and a City or ZIP Code. Choose a State from the pick list. NO TE: Street addr ess entr y is optional, if you like y ou can enter only a city and state or a ZIP code.
- 16 - Stop Menu Options In the Going T o screen, press the Menu soft k ey to access options that include adding, deleting, moving, editing, and optimizing your stops. T o add another destination, choose Add Stop from the men u or simply highlight <Add a Stop> in the Going T o list and press the Action key .
- 17 - Select Help and choose Help for on-scr een instructions about basic CoPilot featur es, or About for v ersion information about CoPilot. Select Cancel to close the menu, Exit to close the CoPilot application. (Another way to exit CoPilot is to simply pr ess the red pow er button on your Q.
- 18 - CoPilot automatically places ev er y stop you enter on a list of fa vorite places f or future quick trip entr y . T o enter a fav orite as a stop, fi rst select Fa vorites in the Select Stop screen. In the next screen, choose one of the places on the scrollable list, then press Select .
- 19 - Finding Points of Inter est CoPilot enables you to sear ch for points of interest (POI) such as gas stations, hotels, restaurants, visitor attractions, etc. within the region for which map data was downloaded fr om your desktop/laptop computer .
- 20 - Step 2 Step 3 1. Select Pick from Map in the Select Stop screen. 2. CoPilot will prompt you to enter a location where y ou can star t searching for the place you ha ve in mind. Highlight one of the options, press Select , and enter any necessar y information.
- 21 - Star t Driving! Once you ha ve enter ed at least one stop in the Select Stop screen, you’ re ready to start driving with CoPilot! Y ou’ll receiv e turn-by-turn directions and ma ps to guide you safel y to your destination.
- 22 - Zooming and Shifting Y our Map View T o zoom your view of the ma p in or out, press the Menu soft k ey and select Zoom In or Zoom Ou t. Or , press the Action ke y to display the zoom arr ow , then press up to zoom in or down to zoom out. This action can be repeated until the minim um or maximum zoom lev el is reached.
- 23 - Menu Options on the Road From an y guidance screen, you can zoom your map vie w in and out, edit your trip , calculate a detour , sav e your location as a fa vorite, and more. Press the Men u soft ke y and select any of the following options: Zoom In/Out In the map screen, zooms your vie w in/out.
- 24 - A v oiding Roads T o av oid an individual road and ha ve CoPilot calculate another route around that r oad, you must be in the Itinerary screen. From there, fi nd the road you want to a void in the scr ollable list and highlight it, then press the Men u soft ke y and select Actions > Avoid Road .
- 25 - Sa ving a Curr ent Location as a F a vorite T o sav e your curr ent location as a Fa vorite, press the Menu soft k ey in the Safety View or Map screen, then select Actions > Sav e GPS Location .
- 26 - Advanced Routing Options Using CoPilot’ s Advanced routing options, you can cr eate combinations of route settings and road pr eferences and sa ve them in separate profi les f or quick recall.
- 27 - Guidance Select Guidance in the Options menu. In the Guidance screen, the settings under Audio T urn W arnings determine how often and where CoPilot will giv e you next turn information out loud.
- 28 - POI Alerts Select POI Alerts in the Options menu. T o toggle the POI Alerts feature on or off, press the Action k ey on Enable POI Aler ts . This screen also lets y ou change settings that determine when and where alerts will be activated.
- 29 - CoPilot Modes CoPilot has three modes of operation on y our Motorola Q. T o switch modes, press Menu > Mode in the Going T o screen or any guidance screen. Guidance Mode In Guidance Mode, you enter one or more destinations, then press Start Driving to star t driving and receiv e guidance.
- 30 - T rip Planning On Y our Motor ola Q Y ou can use CoPilot on your Motorola Q f or trip planning whether or not the GPS receiv er is connected and receiving data. In Planning Mode you can run a trip e ven when y ou’ re not in y our car . Y ou’ll get driving directions and ma ps to use as a refer ence before y our trip begins.
- 31 - T rip Planning On Y our Desktop Y ou can use CoPilot’ s desktop functions to map out r outes and print maps and driving dir ections before getting on the r oad. Desktop trip planning is an additional featur e of CoPilot that is in no way connected to using your Motor ola Q for route guidance.
- 32 - Sa ve T rip Sa ve T rip button or Save T r ip / Save T r ip As ... in the File menu. Open T rip Open T rip button or Open Tr i p in the File menu. Print Print button or Print... in the File menu. Help Help button or Help Contents and Search in the Help menu.
- 33 - Zoom In Zoom In button or Zoom In in the Map menu. Each time you click this button, your view will be zoomed in by one increment. The zoom level is shown in the title bar of the map window . Zoom Out Zoom Out button or Zoom Out in the Map menu.
- 34 - Zoom T o Region Zoom to Region button or Zoom Region in the Map menu. This function allows you to zoom y our map view to a specifi c area. Choices in the sub-menu will depend on which CoPilot data region(s) w ere purchased. Refresh Ma p Refresh Ma p button or Refresh Map in the Map menu.
- 35 - Landmark Reporting Select Landmark Repor ting from the dr op-down T rip menu. In this window y ou can control ho w many landmarks CoPilot points out when generating driving directions. Help Menu Use the drop-do wn Help menu to access CoPilot Help for assistance with all aspects of the software and to quickly access ALK’ s web site.
- 36 - Click the P oints of Interest tab. Enter a state or ZIP code in which you w ould like to search, a radius within which to search, and (optionally) choose a category and type from the drop-do wn menu. Click the binoculars to start the search. Y ou can also enter a name to narr ow down the sear ch in the POIs that start with box.
- 37 - Click the Options button in the T rip Planner window to access CoPilot routing options. Auto and Quick est are the default settings, providing the quick est routing f or automobiles based on practical considerations such as road quality , terrain, and urban/rural classifi cations.
- 38 - CoPilot Liv e Communications CoPilot Live allo ws you to maintain tw o-wa y communication with drivers who are using CoPilot and to actuall y see where the y are curr ently located.
- 39 - Set Up Y our Motorola Q T ake advantage of y our Motorola Q’ s wireless Internet (GPRS) connection for r eal-time traffi c aler ts, tracking, messaging, and itinerar y updates. First, create your Username and Passw ord on the CoPilot Live w ebsite as described abov e.
- 40 - Real-Time T r affi c Informa tion NO TE: T raffi c is an optional additional-cost ser vice and is not available in all areas. In addition to pr oviding users with pr e-trip planning and GPS r.
- 41 - Responding to T raffi c Incident Aler ts CoPilot Live alerts you when a traffi c incident is detected on y our route ahead. In the T raffi c screen, highlight an incident and press Menu f or response options. If you choose to A void the incident, a new route will be calculated to a void congestion.
- 42 - Cr eating/Using Y our Own V oice Y ou can create your o wn voice or load v oices that other CoPilot users ha ve cr eated and posted online . T o do this, create a folder with any name y ou want and copy sound fi les with the exact names of the CoPilot sound fi les.
- 43 - CoPilot T echnical Suppor t After registering y our software (see p.44), you’ re entitled to technical support and discounts on new versions of CoPilot. Check out ALK’ s web site f or technical support documentation and posted answers to common questions.
- 44 - Using Help Files CoPilot pro vides extensive Help Files, available on y our desktop/laptop and your Motor ola Q, to guide you through the pr ogram as you use it. T o access Help on your Motor ola Q, once the CoPilot application is launched, press Menu > Help .
- 45 - CoPilot End-User License Agreement NO TE: On the following pages there ar e three separate license agreements for users of North American , European , and Australian Data . THIS IS A LEGAL AGREEMENT BETWEEN Y OU, THE USER (either an individual or an entity), AND ALK TECHNOLOGIES, INC.
- 46 - 4. Licensee's Responsibility: Y ou assume all responsibility for , and ALK shall not be liable for , all action taken, decisions made, and advice given as a result of your use of the Softwar e . 5. US Gov ernment Restricted Rights: The Software and documentation ar e pro vided with restricted and limited rights.

- 48 - Restrictions. Except where you ha ve been specifically licensed to do so by ALK, and without limiting the preceding paragraph, you ma y not (a) use this Data with any pr oducts, systems, or app.
- 49 - ma y make a single back-up or ar chival copy of the Softwar e for back-up purposes only . Y ou may not transf er this Software or assign this License Agreement to another party . Y ou are NO T permitted, during the term of this License Agreement and thereafter to: • Use the Software on a netw ork or file server .
