1-1 Chapter 1 Getting Star ted This chapter gives an overview of the Point 16 00 pen tablet’s fea tures and explains basic use. The Point 1600 TM pen table t runs t he Win dow s 95 or W ind ow s 98 op era t in g system. Figure 1-1 and Figure 1-2 show the location of features and controls o n the pen tablet.

1-4 Gettin g Started Statu s LEDs 1 The status LEDs indicate various system con ditions including power state, hard disk drive use, and battery char ge level. 2-2 Using th e Point 1600 Pen Ta blet Y our syst em may be configured to transition between these sta tes automatically a fter a period of inactivity to conserve battery pow er . To determine the current system sta te, obs erve the Power LED. Table 1-1 on page 1-5 gives the different system states represented by the Power LED.

2-4 Using th e Point 1600 Pen Ta blet Suspend/Re sume Button Con figur a tion 2 The Suspend/Resume button on the pen tablet can be configured using one of the following three settings: • Normal In the Normal setting, the syst em suspends or resumes operation when you press the Suspend/Resum e button.
Starting o r Resuming the Sy stem 2-5 Star ting or Resumin g the S ystem 2 To start or resume the system, 1. Press the Suspend /Resume button once. If system operation was suspen ded in the pr evious session, system opera tion will resume.
2-6 Using th e Point 1600 Pen Ta blet Suspendi ng t he System 2 You can conserve battery power by sus pending the system when you are not using the pen tablet. Suspending the s ystem allows you to sto p the system without clo sing files or exiting programs that are o pen or running.
Other Sus pend/ Resume Issu es 2-7 Other Suspend/Resume Issues 2 Other issues you should consider when suspending or resuming system operation include the follow ing: • Y our system may be configur ed to suspend operation automatically after a period of inactivity .
2-8 Using th e Point 1600 Pen Ta blet Shutting Down the System 2 When you shut down your system, the pen tablet enters the Off power state. If you will not be using the pen tablet for an extende d period of time (several days), you should shut down the system to prevent the ba ttery pack from discharging completely.
Using the Pen 2-9 Here are some hints on how to use th e pen like a two-button mouse o n a desktop system. • T o se lect an obje ct , tap the pen tip o n the object once.
2-1 0 Using th e Point 1600 Pen Ta blet Ensur ing P en Accuracy 2 The Point 1600 pen tablet come s fr om the factory already calibrated so that the cursor location matches the pen tip location. If the cursor is not displayed d irectly under the pen tip when you touch t he screen, then you should calibrate the pen tablet.

Taking Care of t he Pen 3-3 T aking Care of the P en 3 The Point 1600 pen ti p is made of a so ft plastic material th at is designed to minim iz e scratching of the display screen. With use, the pen tip may become worn or may pick up particles of dust or dirt that can scratch the display screen.
3-4 Care, Mai n tenance, and Tr oubleshooting Calibr a ting the P en 3 If the cursor does not appea r under the tip of the pen or appears to be mi saligned with the pen tip, you should calibrate the pen. The pen tablet determines where the pen tip touches the display screen in order to determ ine the correct location o f the cursor.
